• Rumor: Idris Elba Might be the next James Bond

Damn man that article was hard to get through, the guy couldn't come across more of a whining cringing little milksop desperate to earn brownie points with his nu-feminist middle-class socialist coworkers. Bond is the man of his time and some of those times were less "enlightened" than the time of this self appointed defender of the proletariat author.
Syfall is a pretty weird movie cause Casino Royale was very much a reboot, the story was very close to the original novel with the timeframe changed and details changed to match a modern setting instead of the 50s and it explicitly showed us Bonds first kill that gave him the 00-status. It was supposed to be a new start with a Bond that is both closer to the novels and more modern at the same time but then with Skyfall they just decided to homage the old movies instead making everything confusing.
He's not wrong though. And neither are you. Bond is a man of his time, specifically the 50-60's, which weren't exactly a time of socially progressive views. As I've been saying, Bond is a terrible person if you're putting him in the context of modern culture. Which is why it feels disingenuous to try and reclaim his character in the name of social progress.
This sounds like a great idea. Big fan of the actor.
Scene 007 arrives back at HQ and is waiting to be called into Q's office. Money Penny: James did you get a haircut? 007: No. Money Penny: Well what ever your doing. Keep it up.
Idris Elba isn't scottish

I don't care if it is pandering or not, I think Idris Elba would be awesome for the role. He's in the list of actors whose movies I will see regardless of what movie it is. I think the list right now is something like (in no particular order) 1.) The Rock 2.) Keira Knightley 3.) Idris Elba I can probably think of more later
If you really want to get down to ethnic brass tacks, James Bond is supposed to be Scottish, yet he's been played by a parade of Englishman (and one Irish guy) for the vast majority of the movies. I don't see how him being a black British guy is any different than a white British guy, his national/ethnic background was already been changed to suit the actors, so functionally skin color has shit all to do with the character now, he could be purple and as long as he was "suave british-y guy" he'd qualify as Bond.
What happened to having Henry Cavill?
He might be too busy with DC movies to take on another big franchise role, although after seeing him in MI:6 I wouldn’t mind him being the next Bond. Elba’s a great choice, but he’s getting too old for it. By the time Craig is officially out and they make Elba’s first movie, he’s gonna be 47 or 48 and I doubt he wants to do big action movies in his fifties.
I thought Bond's Scottish heritage was a retcon Fleming added because he liked Connery in the role so much?
I didn't know I needed this till now
isn't that always the case until craig bond was retconned as bond?
It genuinely should be Cavill- he would be perfect for the role; he's young, charming and fits the description. Idris is great but is too old- the Bond films that they've got left to remake are all of Bond's younger missions (Skyfall and Spectre supposedly being toward the end of the Bond story). There probably will never be a Jane Bond. With the waves of regendering roles, there has been one argument that people have used to justify it, i.e. 'Shush stupid, let this happen, it's not like they'll ever be a Jane Bond'. I think if we ever have a Jane Bond it will signal something highly significant culturally.
My Dad has literally been mistaken for Daniel Craig at one point while on holiday, I think this says it all.
Neither are any of the other actors that played Bond after Connery.
As much as I like Elba, hiring him would be downright wrong as stated by other people in this film. Give the part to Clive Owen.
caville did pretty good in the Man from UNCLE movie that came out a few years ago, he'd be like early connery or moore
Why can't people just be like "Cool" Instead of immediately jumping on the "This is cleeeaarly a disregard for the sanctity of a character and is just pandering!!" Why do people want movies to be so rigid and unchangeable? Haven't we seen enough of that?
Maybe because some people care about a movie at a deeper level than "lol his name is still bond who cares." Bond is a well established character that has specific backstory and motivation that really forms the characters.
And there's nothing about those things that him being black would change.
The "Bond is code name" is fan fiction but, it is a reasonable way to justify Bond being anybody (007 is the only code name). There is a pretty good list of actors who could play Bond (personally, I'd like to have seen either Richard Armitage or Damien Lewis), but like Com Truise said on the first page, if there was ever to be a black Bond, it should be Idris Elba. With Danny Boyle at the helm of the film, I'm not too concerned. It's rumors, and likely the way the wind is blowing, so all one can do now is prepare for the complaints about Bond being black or, if he's passed over, accusations of racism.
Ok no until Skyfall Bond had extremely little in the way of backstory or motivation beyond "I'm a spy. Queen and Country." Books that have little to no connection to the movies don't matter, and the majority of people don't even realize they were books.
Idris Elba is a great actor and I don't mind a black Bond. But it's too late. People are complaing about Craig getting too old for the role and this would be replacing him with slightly "younger" actor.
Why can't we have Simon Pegg
I think it might be cool to make a James Bond reboot that is firmly set in the 60's with a planned out set of movies about Spectre villians. With a set cast and a Bond that doesn't change. That way you could have a bond portrayed the way he was supposed to be, rather than trying to shoehorn a "relic" into modern settings with an expectation of being PC or whatever. Make the movies more about gadgets and suave spy stuff, rather than explosions and drawn out action scenes. There have been official and unofficial Bond streams in the past, so why not?
They'd have to bring a little sadness to Bond's character I feel. Elba's performance in Luther struck chords, and he could bring the same improvement to the role of Bond if they adjust to fit his personality. The isolated-yet-still-fighting-for-humanity vibe.
I'd be fine with seeing Elba take over after Craig. We've gone so far away from 60s bond that I don't think it will make a big deal or change up the modern bond setting that much.
James Bond had a very well defined character up until the Craig films. He's a charming, classy, unfeeling sociopath. His motivation is action and pussy. As Matt Damon put it "Bond is a misogynist who likes swilling martinis and killing people and then telling jokes about it." Does that sound like a shitty person with no admirable characteristics? Yep! But that's what I like about him. I like Bond because it has, and has always been, complete schlock. They're goofy, pulp, action thrillers. James Bond is the shirtless guy on the cover of Men's Action magazine, holding a girl in one arm, and punching out a filthy bastard Communist with the other. The only reason his character works at all is because he's a comical exaggeration, living in a comically exaggerated world. The racism, sexism, and general shittiness of Bond is so brazen, so completely absurd and out of its time, that it's become hilarious to watch in a modern context. That's what I didn't like about Craig. His movies tried to humanize Bond into a sympathetic character with conflicts and emotions, which is antithetical to what the 5 previous decades of Bond media has established. If you're looking for serious, thoughtful storytelling, then why on Earth do you like Bond?
