Isn't that one of those cliché stereotypes about French people - that they smoke a lot? I assume the article isn't getting at that due to being by France24, but yeah...
This is why I find Climate Change denial so stupid, because pollution isn't just bad for the climate. The Great Smog in London killed so many people, and whilst it's nowhere near as bad these days, the cumulative effect pollution has on people, especially those with things like COPD over their lives, is just as good a reason to focus on renewables and electric vehicles as a priority.
I visited Paris last December and I remember everyone smoking and it being pretty dirty. But hey that might've been because I hit all the tourist spots but to me it seemed dirtier than NYC or Chicago.
183 cigarettes isn't alot though, especially for a year. City Centre London must be worse.
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/air-pollution-on-busy-roads-as-bad-as-passive-smoking-10-a-day-60q2pwdg0
That makes 3650 cigarettes annualy on average.
Bruh we smoke, trust me
Though all the statistics are only done in the *U countries so there are no numbers I can find without bother
I know these feels. My city is in a valley downwind of LA. All their pollution blows off and gets trapped down here. None of us can fucking breathe
Thank god for the Košava I guess, though it makes people's hands go purple in winter how nasty it is.
They say each cig is ~10 mins off your life, so that would be nearly a month with that many.
Living in London means I'm basically fucked long term if this is any indication.
I get that the article is intentionally written deceptively, but please bear in mind that it says 'passively' smoking that amount, not 'actively.' Second-hand smoke is obviously still unhealthy, but it's nowhere near the same level of danger as smoking 10 a day.
As soon as I get my degree I'm zipping straight back to my shitty country town, even in Melbourne, which isn't that bad pollution-wise, I can still feel my breathing being worse than it used to be a couple years ago.
I'll keep a few months of my lifespan over the joy of being smashed by crowds and hour-long traffic jams.
I think the cigarette comparison works only as far as communicating urgency goes. The actual health implications of municipal air pollution and a smoking habit each depend on a plethora of unique, individual factors that greatly shift the conclusion and even then, there is such a large variety of different possible negative outcomes, the only accurate conclusion you can draw is that both things are "possibly kind of bad for you".
Doesnt help that well over 1/2 people smoke in Paris on top of it
With the diesel particulate thingy last year I am a tad concerned about what I'm breathing
So what's it like in Delhi? 183 cigarettes a day? And in Beijing? 183 cigarettes an hour?
Yeah, a yearly intake of cigarettes for an addict is far more than just a
measly 183. 183 is less than a carton If you smoke a pack a week you're
looking at ~1000 cigarettes a year. If you're like me and smoke 3 packs
a week we're up to almost 3000. Pack a day? That's just over 7000
cigarettes a year.
A year in Paris is as bad for your health as smoking 183 cigarettes
Is that before or after accounting for the air quality?

man I love not getting banned immediately for memes now.
As someone who smokes 0 cigarettes, 183 is a lot
