• Valve is still making Half-Life 3 jokes

And suddenly in November 19 2018 we get the most information about the Half Life franchise's future that we're hoping for... That's just a dream...

To me, Half-Life was Valve's flagship brand that displayed their incredible ability to innovate video games. To say the least, I feel bitter that Valve is making light-hearted jokes about their transformation into what they are now.
The expectations people have/had for it couldn't be sated by the best handpicked game dev team on the planet. HL2 is perhaps the most overrated FPS in the history of 3D gaming. I'm not at all surprised that valve dropped any plans to make a 3rd game; they realized they somehow delivered something that had a bigger illusory effect on people's imaginations of what could be, than what it actually was. HL3 has to be the best. game. ever. or people will feel like they are cheated when HL2 was released it also brought some pretty impressive technical improvements. Facial animations were a big deal back then, so were overrated but at the time novel physics. What is valve going to do thats novel in 2018? A new engine that will be technically inferior to stuff like unreal? What gimmick are they going to hang their hat on? Its a deck with no cards in it. So all they can do is release a generic, albeit competently designed shooter that everyone will pan as being "we waited 15 years for THIS?!!"
I never understood this argument. So why was Episode 2 so good? I had extremely good expectations for it and it still blew my mind. Whatever helps you deal with the grief of never finishing the franchise, I guess.
october , 2007. It is now 11 years later. I dont think its remiss to suggest that expectations bloat with time. See also: what people expect out of STALKER 2, another game that has taken on a different life in peoples imaginations than what it ever actually was. also lol at that snarky little bitch comment. I do not care to see HL3, I think describing HL2 as the most overrated FPS in the history of 3d gaming would make that clear, whereas you on the other hand apparently had your mind blown by episode 2.
Riots on the streets as Valve makes an HL3 joke, more at 9. The thing is, due to the way they work they can't just say that Half-Life (or any other known project of theirs) is on hold, they'd say it's on hold but the very next day someone at Valve might decide to work on it.
I'd actually laugh along if we had any indication that valve still cared about some of the properties that aren't turn-key operations...
Please armchair marketing guy, enlighten me with all the extensive research you've done into the PC market, the financial state of Valve and the prospect of long dormant IPs receiving sequels and fan response to said sequels in the market.
I don't disagree with that comment, but HL2 was the most important game of my life. I've spent more time playing the half-life games and their mods than any other game I've played. Also, what in the world do you mean by STALKER 2? Have you played it to actually know what it is in comparison to what people imagine it to be?
I think this was less Valve making fun of fans and more the Dota team making fun of Gabe's history of quotes. And sure you can say it's still offensive n such, but Valve is a very different company now. This was done in the Dota bubble so to speak, without bad intent.
to be honest I always thought hl2 wasn't even that great of a sequel to hl1 with it basically throwing out everything about hl1 and going generic alien scifi survival. the combine were cool but not quite the same as hl1 was with its weird blend of office complex and military fortress
HL2 came out in 2004. GTA: SA came out in 2004. Compare them graphically, of course one is a lot better. GTA: V came out in 2013. HL3 should at least match it by this or that. Kind of hard to reach that level now, unless you use all new engines and shit (what they actually do have).
By cliffhanging a large chunk of their fanbase for over a decade, and then never openly talking about its future afterwards, they ended up losing that chunk gradually over time, I think. Ironically enough, they didn't prepare for unforeseen consequences. Personally, I've stopped caring about Half-Life or its future. I'll always have good memories, and if a decent mod ever shows up (like Echoes for HL1 did recently) then I'll always be up to give it a shot, but overall I just couldn't give much of a fuck about Half-Life or Valve at this point. L4D was the last game I gave any interest towards from Valve. Portal never interested me, neither does Counter-Strike, or Dota 2 (or really any MOBA that has ever existed). They want to keep making dumb jokes about a clinically dead franchise, they can go right ahead. I've got more interesting things to do with my time these days.
The episode 3 development staff were an ass, and we won't be working with them again.
Even worse, potentially kill the entire series, rip Duke we won't see you for at least 20 years
My last bastion of hope is November, the 20th Anniversary. It's the thinnest thread of hope holding on just barely, but if the 20th goddamn anniversary of their flagship IP goes by and fuck-all is done? That's it for me.
Obligatory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EAvFIkEK08
When I was like 12, I was super into the whole half-life universe and all Valve IPs. I was a huge Valve fanboy and spent hours playing HL2DM, Garrys mod, Tf2, portal, etc etc etc But at this point those IPs are so dead that I've like completely forgotten about them. I just have no interest in a dead series. It's like Duke Nukem to me, it was cool back in the day but it's been so long since anything interesting has happened with the series that I only have an academic interest in it. Even if HL3 came out tomorrow I'd be casually interested at best and would probably only buy it once it was on sale
I will wait until the end of days for Valve to finish HL2: Episode Three.
Except that Half Life 1 was kinda generic alien scifi survival, even more so than Half Life 2 considering you fought actual aliens in Half Life 1. They just did it in a unique setting, which the only reason that Half Life 2 wasn't as unique was because Half Life 2 had a much bigger scope and thus had a lot more generic parts contend with, and even then it did pretty well considering it's Eastern European setting that hasn't really been replicated otherwise. Half life 2 is definitely a different beast than Half Life 1, Half Life 1 was more of a tight, enclosed journey where you're trying to survive throughout a research complex in the midst of an alien invasion, whereas Half Life 2 is a massive journey about fighting a war against and already invaded alien slave state, and that's intentional. Half life 2 was trying to break boundaries and do things differently than Half Life 1 simply because it could, it didn't want to be anything close to Half Life 1.5, and that's fine with me. I do honestly like Half Life 1 much better, but that's exactly it: I like it better. Doesn't mean it's worse, it's just I, like you, prefer it over Half Life 2. Doesn't make it any worse of a game.
It hasn't been a decade of silence. The game hasn't released, but Valve - or at least Gabe - has told us a few times why we don't have it yet. It wasn't "on hold" until at the very earliest 2012 where Gabe said it was still being worked on, said why it wasn't and then re-affirmed that reason why we haven't heard about it again in 2017; they work on their games in a way that means even during late development they might scrap and re-do parts of their games, and because every other Valve game has been announced and then had significant changes between reveal and release (E.g. TF2 disapearing for 7 years and coming back as something entirely different) they don't want to cause that again.
People wouldn't be pissing and moaning at Valve if they stopped doing Half Life after 3. I just want to see the end of the story. It doesn't have to (nor had to) be some grand, masterpiece of gaming.
Too soon Gabe, the body isn't even cold yet
What're you on about? The body has already decomposed
Making jokes about HL3? What a mingebag.
You peasants, i actually found this video pretty damn cool and hilarious!
Well, when it was found endearing back when Valve were still lauded as the "good guys", it's not entirely a habit formed of their own doing...
jesus guys its just an announcer pack, i mean i dont like valve as much as i used to but holy damn this thread
This is more than anyone can bear https://youtu.be/8dcTMOa92VU But we will persevere
