Zero tolerance: No safe level of alcohol, study says

Pretty sure it works the opposite for me; the less I drink, the shorter my life will be. I can feel my soul leave my body inch by inch while sober.
I think thats called alcoholism.
no he's finnish, it's called life or death
Sounds like withdrawal.
You addicted, my man.
I think that's called alcoholism.
For generations men of my family have enjoyed a lot of alcohol, only one died of it but because he fell off a boat while pissing over the side. For me alcohol doesn't do much and i have to drink a lot of it fast to get a good buzz going. I am truly pinnacle of alcoholic evolution.
What if I just don't like alcohol?
Oh wait, I'm gonna die aswell... Unless I'm immortal and I don't know it.
Is there a point where we are too concerned about if something is entirely healthy for you? Like I see stuff like this every day where x is bad for you or x causes cancer while there are also other shit that says the same things are good for you and is healthy. If you lived your life balanced on what you consume why the fuck does it matter? Its just an unnecessary fear and complication because in reality pretty much everything is bad for you in large amounts. Calcium can put you in a coma if you eat too much of it but everyone still considers it healthy. It makes no sense. I will continue to live my life eating and drinking what ever I want in moderation, its worked for me so far.
This is one of those things where there are legitimate medical and scientific reasons for the research (eg better treating alcoholics by understanding the physiological impact of alcohol), but pop science tries to turn it into something that will sell to the public. Nobody wants to read scientific literature for the sake of essentially trivia, but 'ONE WEIRD TRICK TO LIVE LONGER'? That generates clicks.
That's okay.
I can't drink any alcohol at all because all of it makes me feel like I've shoved a bunch of white hot razor blades into my stomach. Shit legit hurts like fuck.
No getting even so much as buzzed for me, I gotta face life sober, woohoo!
i beg for death
and i feel like i'm living just fine by not feeling a compulsion to drink something that not only tastes like shit but also induces me to do dumb shit
tbh you shouldn't drink every day imo
The risk climbs in a steep "J-curve", the study found.
An average of two drinks per day, for example, translated into a 7.0 per cent hike in disease and injury compared to those who opt for abstinence.
With five "units" of alcohol per day, the likelihood of serious consequences jumps by 37 per cent.
I figured something was up with this story, and sure enough I stumbled across this analysis. One of the main criticisms is that the absolute effect size is minuscule and basically washed out for light drinkers (1 drink a day or less).
cool, in absolutely no way was i implying that you need to drink or eat meat in order to live. i really don't see how anyone could have taken my post that way.
i don't mean literally living, it just seemed to imply that someone who doesn't drink or whatever isn't getting the most out of the time they're alive, i guess. i agree people shouldn't take extraordinary precautions just to try and squeeze out an extra year or two, but i don't think i'm missing out on anything by avoiding alcohol.
it was more an explanation as to why people might do things that scientifically reduce their lifespans rather than a specific exhortation about alcohol, your latter point. if you don't like drinking, i'm happy for you, you don't need to do it. a lot of people enjoy it so hey they're free to do so, as well. of course, you can take it too far, as with most things really, but i think worrying about this thing or that being unhealthy or adding such-and-such percentage of chance at getting some disease or another, especially when such percentage is essentially negligible, is unnecessary anxiety and can get in the way of living life to the fullest. know the risks, but don't let the fear of risks consume you.
we seem to agree, it was just a communication error, one that i feel driven by how hyper-combative discussion has gotten in our society as of late. we go into discussions assuming the worst and try to "win" it. everything's becoming an argument, it feels like. don't take this as an admonition of you, we've all fallen into this trap.
Have you seen a doctor about this? Alcohol allergies are a real thing and can be associated with other intolerances you might not be aware about.
This mostly seems to be talking about one glass a day people. I dunno about most people but I certainly don't drink a glass every single day, just every so often when I feel like it.
I've got a long list of things that piss my stomach off. My digestive system has just never worked right since day one. Probably already aware of 90% of them, but I do plan on talking to a doctor about it soon so I don't accidentally eat something that legit kills me one day.
Dont see a reason to drink anyway
whats the margin of error on that lol? surely more than 0.5%
Again with the media changing their minds/views every now and then; "a glass of red a day is good for you!"/"NO WAIT ALCOHOL IS BAD AND CAN KILL YOU!" :V
To each their own. You drink alcohol? Cool. You don't drink? Nothing wrong with that. We are all born on this earth and we all die in the end.
Alcohol is fucking poison, of course it's bad for you.
It's one of the most dangerous drugs -- withdrawal can fucking kill you -- but because it's so ingrained in our culture we just pretend it's no big deal.
EPIDEMIOLOGY IS TRASH SCIENCE

An Epidemic of Bad Epidemiology
This guys twitter thread pokes suspicion at the study:

It’s not entirely the media’s fault. These are often studies performed by academics and reviewed by their peers. But it’s not their fault either. The sciences are suffering from a reproducibility crisis, particularly in areas such as psychology and nutrition. Some of the fault lies in poor application of the scientific method, especially with older studies, but much of the fault also lies in the fact that it’s often impossible to perfectly reproduce studies. Also, many of these studies are testing for different hypotheses - whether slightly or significantly different.
No one study should be taken as evidence for something. Science can be fallible, hence why conclusions in science ought to be (and are) based on consensus. It might just be that researchers haven’t yet arrived at a consensus on whether alcohol is generally good or bad for you yet.
Never intended on living forever anyways
