• 16-year-old Gazan shot to death by Israeli soldiers while waving his hands

Pretty sure there's like an entire universe between a single rock and a 5.56 round in terms of adequate response, but maybe that's just me.
Now throw that rock at a soldier guarding a highly militarised border that is also a conflict zone. Do it, to say, a North Korean on the DMZ when tensions are at an all time high, for example. A more accurate comparison to make since that Nork soldier will be a conscript, just like the Israeli one.
When you put it like that, of course you won't get shot. If I were to start throwing rocks at the police during a protest or a demonstration in my country, then the likelihood of me getting shot are none to zero. But like @Ravenholme said above, we are throwing rocks in a conflict zone. It is different and I'm sure you can see this.
Isreal has been on the road to facism under netanyahu
And what conflict zone Israel is... I'm willing to bet the US police officer's death rate per thousand officers is higher than the IDF's death rate per thousand soldiers who were killed in combat, not accidents. Lets see: In 2017 7 IDF soldiers were killed during combat. With 176,500 soldiers in active service, that's a yearly death rate of 0.0396 per thousand soldiers. There are around 900,000 US police officers. In 2017 129 officers died in the line of duty, with a yearly death rate of 0,1433 per thousand officers. The average yearly deaths over the last decade is 151 per year, even higher. A regular US police officer is more than 3 times as likely to die in the line of duty than an IDF soldier in a conflict zone. And still the IDF soldiers responds to every threat, however small it is, with lethal gunfire. Try to justify that.
Treaties, States parties, and Commentaries As posted earlier in this thread and you failed to read it. 3. Civilians shall enjoy the protection afforded by this Section, unless and for such time as they take a direct part in hostilities. Throwing a rock at the soldiers is taking part in direct hostilities. Not sure what other proof people need. 16 year olds most definitely do not go to these riots because they feel like it, they get told to go or are coerced into going. The only crime committed was by the Palestinian side because they let kids partake in these. I know there's a huge hate train going on FP about Israel, not sure if posters are Muslims or just hate Jews.
Shooting an unarmed 16 year old isn't a crime? Interesting.
Mate, we've had soldiers patrolling crowded public spaces here for years due to the constant looming threats of terrorist attacks. Walking past bundles of soldiers doing their rounds FAMAS in hand is a daily occurrence and when attacks actually occur you have to open up your bags and let them check the insides on a regular basis for the following weeks. It may not be the border of a conflict zone but there are definitely sensitive areas. Even then, if you start fucking around with soldiers, they'll evaluate the danger you pose realistically and won't open fire because you're monkeying around, like tossing pebbles and waving your arms. Being near a sensitive area does not mean you can't use your fucking brain.
Did you read my post at all? Throwing rocks and protesting might be taking part in hostilities in the literal sense, but that doesn't mean you can just execute them. Use your brain for once. We're talking about soldiers with an absolutely minuscule risk of injury or death, who shoot live ammunition and regularly kill civilians for the slightest reason. How can you possibly justify that? There are a million alternatives to live ammo.
Pointing out that he was throwing rocks is kinda like saying “yeah he called him a dumbass tho!!!”. The response is so disproportionate that the provocation really doesn’t matter. You saying “he shouldn’t have done this, and the other guy shouldn’t have that” sorta puts them on the same language wise.
You cant justify this shooting. Kid throws rock. Waives arms for a few seconds. Gets gunned down by a soldier. I say again, if this happened in an american ghetto with a police oficer and civilian suspect, we would all be calling for head. While not a direct paralell but these soldiers should have had another way to deal with a rock thrower than live ammunition. Kids dead because of this.
I've got to agree on that, they could have evaluated the "threat" better. I didn't even see the footage/video related to the incident, but I can imagine it wasn't one of those situations either where a police/soldier feels threatened and has to make a quick decision about using their guns. However I still have to say that the kid should have known the risk. He definitely should have known the risk in doing what he was doing. The risk is still there, even for you and me in our respective countries.
Didn't mean it that way. current theory is that an army sniper tried to shoot him in the shin with a .22 like they usually do for crowd control and missed hitting his thigh, wasn't intentional murder.
Not sure how that's supposed to help the case at all or even begin to justify it. Opening fire into crowds to scare them off is garbage. Going for non-lethal body shots is fucking stupid and nothing short of cruel and undisciplined. Fucking up a shot at this distance by the length of an entire leg is laughable.
Lol at all you fucking lunatics defending this, what the in the ever living fuck Just arrest the boy and give him a lesson about what could happen if he continues being hostile into adulthood. As for the guy who shot him. He should be arrested too.
Why are you comparing police to soldiers? They're not the same. I bet you if you went up and threw rocks at soldiers guarding a fence their response would not be the same as riot police. What happened to this kid is absolutely awful but I really don't understand why you can't say what he did was incredibly stupid. The soldier definitely shouldn't have shot him because he was not a threat, but, don't throw rocks at soldiers if you want to live.
Jesus christ, that video. It's like they stared at the kid for a few seconds, thought "ah fuck it", and just put a round through his stomach. Wonder what the hell that soldier was thinking by firing on an unarmed boy. Literally no defense for that, he was clearly waving his arms. Didn't even do a follow up shot either, makes me think it was just a warning one that he accidentally hit.
Even soldiers at checkpoints have to issue warnings before firing, unless they're facing a direct, active threat. Not only was the kid throwing a rock not a threat, it wasn't even an active one when he was shot. He was waving his arms around, not preparing to throw another rock. Expecting supposedly trained soldiers to follow code is not stupid. Except when it comes to Israeli soldiers it seems.
It's very sad that this happened, I hope that the Israeli responsible for the shooting is brought to justice. The actions of these soldiers directly influence the way the world views Israel so they need to show their moral on this situation. I will say the entire Gaza vs Israel conflict is so beyond fucked, if this was going to happen anywhere it would be at the Gazan border. But to me that means any IDF soldiers stationed with protecting that border need to be the best trained of all. I hope that is what Israel is doing...
Irregardless of the politics surrounding, Isreal/Palestine , I wonder if some of you have heard of escalation of force? Someone throws a rock you don't retaliate by blowing them away with a rifle. God forbid if the kid actually had a gun, they might've dropped ordnance on the surrounding area.
