How deliberate do you think that phenomenon really is, though? Do you earnestly think anyone is wringing their hands and purposefully painting GG as some evil bigotry circus while still being privy to the truth? Maybe I'm naive, but I don't think that falsehoods and omissions usually are committed intentionally. I think that they are, as I've said, products of incomplete perspectives. When there was, as has often been observed and described in this very thread, abundant shittiness and genuine toxicity in GG, can you really blame people who experienced that side of the movement first and foremost and, thus, are somewhat leery of the whole thing? All it takes is a few, highly formative experiences to somewhat lithify ones opinion. Especially if those experiences are negative. Humans are not inherently rational constructs. We have our biases, and what forms those biases is entirely individualistic. That's what makes it so difficult to form mutual understandings sometimes. If those formative experiences don't line up, it takes a lot of persistent, effective argumentation to convince someone of your perspective. Because, essentially, what you're trying to tell them is (seemingly) fundamentally incompatible with their experiences. It really does make me wonder if people ever will truly understand each-other. There's so many factors and complexities at play when it comes to ones perspectives and opinions, it makes it seem really difficult. GG has been a great case-study at observing this, for me. Now, all this being said, I do have to wonder just how much of this false narrative is intentionally constructed. While I don't like to think of that as being a widespread phenomenon, perhaps that is, again, my naivety speaking. I'd prefer to imagine that what we see as insidious manipulation is really just people constructing a narrative which aligns with their own perspective. Which, while not ideal, is a lot less cartoonishly evil.

The initial start of GG had to have been. A lot of those "gamers are dead" articles all came out around the same time, and as shitty as Milo is and while he only did this to (successfully) hijack the movement that had little idea what kind of person he was or what breitbart was, he DID break the news on the GJP email group. I don't blame average people who buy into the "GG lynches women" narrative because that's literally all you read in mainstream gaming news headlines. Other normal non-gaming media picks up what gaming sites run because why would they be just making shit up, and so that spreads and eventually the narrative becomes true as they inadvertently invited the actual misogynists and harassers to take over the movement. A lot of the garbage pushed the actual good stuff aside, like back when Escapist actually made an attempt to address issues, or the event where journalist Michael Koretzky got members of the SPJ and some of the actually good key figureheads of GG (and unfortunately Milo) together to talk about issues. The same event where anti-gg trolls called in a bomb threat and they had to evacuate and continue it outside via periscope streaming.
