They didn't learn in 90s, I don't see why they'd learn now when they own 2/3rds of the entire broadcast and rebroadcast video entertainment industry. He said it planly, they plan to exclude other providers and do 100% of their media themselves. One can only imagine what will happen when they try videogames again.
Infinity War actively disproves this though. It was a very, very solid film that managed to make its villain interesting and make use of a massive cast of characters. That's because it was intended for a while now to be a two-parter focused on literally that specific moment. That moment, the snap,is meant to be the dividing line because it is a such a monumental thing. Doing it any other way would have made the story and the impact significantly worse. The MCU movies continue to be very good, typically getting bettter. The lowest points have been the first two Thor movies and Avengers 2. Thor 3 was a fucking amazing movie, Guardians 2 was a delightful story that contrasted with the others by being noticeably smaller and more personal than others, Spiderman: Homecoming was arguably the best film realization of Spiderman yet, Black Panther was a solidly well rounded film with a great cast, and Ant-Man 2 was an delightful adventure romp. Phase 3 has been amazing for the MCU. Right now the weakest one for Phase 3 is looking to be Captain Marvel, but we've only got one trailer for that so far and also Carol Danvers just kinda sucks anyway to be honest. The problem Star War has is they went in to it with literally no plan. They just threw the jackass that is J. J. Abrams at it and said, "Make money!" and he just did his usual, "I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm gonna half-ass it." approach. And then Disney said, "We need more money. Do Star Wars MCU. Give by Tuesday." and everyone went, "Ohh fuck, this is due in two days and I haven't even come up with a thesis!" There is no one with any idea what they are doing in control of the Star Wars films.
no it "flopped" because the budget was inflated by having to reboot partway into production. If they had begun with Ron Howard in the first place and the movie was the same it would've made its returns. TLJ souring just before and the refusal to push it to December so it'd be out of peoples minds didn't help at all either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_films#Most_expensive_films_(adjusted_for_inflation) In the long run though I think it's good that it was here, otherwise we'd be jumping from TLJ to Resistance and the animosity toward it would've been tenfold. I get the sense that LF and Disney realize Solo was good and that's why they're throwing a lot of additional materials at us, even though that's been the course for Disney Star Wars already. When Rogue One came out a shitton of the extra stuff coming after was directly related to it. It's most noticeable in Rebels. But it does feel like they're doing even more seconds for Solo.
it seems star wars fans want the same 2 movies to be made over and over and get angry at any innovation
Actually they were looking at trying to stop making video games themselves because of losses due to overproducing Disney Infinity characters, and generally making terribly received games. They shut down their in-house video game studios. They made bad picks for it to be carried on.
I want entirely different movies to be made. TFA literally bores the fuck out of me because it does nothing new or even interesting.
Yeah, sure. Just a god damn shame the screen based sick Rian Johnson got greenlit and put on the screen for all to see didn't innovate in any way.
TLJ was better than force awakens in terms of originality
I think the problem is that they've released 4 movies in the space of about 3 years. It's probably caused a bit of fatigue.
The only good thing to crawl out of the new films is Rouge One. It may not have been a memorable movie but atleast it was good.
It's my understanding that they were tasked with re-filming because their direction was too goofy for Disney's vision.
It feels like I'm the only one who disliked Infinity War. Thanos being the main protagonist of it was a cool idea with a solid execution, but everything else sort of falls apart. Thanos comes off more as dumb than anything else considering his plane is nonsensical, and since he doesn't appear to fetishize death in this version there is really not much excuse for that. One could argue that Thanos simply doesn't grasp the concept of infinite power and is too set in his old, fanatical ways, and I agree that this is probably how it's supposed to come off, but since no reflection is made upon this point there is really no way to tell. Just having a character comment on how poor Thanos' plan was - beyond it simply being unacceptable because of the halving of the population - would have made it clear. I also feel like the entire movie could have been Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (ft. the Avengers) just like Civil War was Captain America 3 (ft. the Avengers). I say this because the only who truly matter are the Guardians, Thor and Doctor Strange. I felt everybody else was kind of inconsequential.
I am not sure how one can put TLJ and good in the same sentence. It's an incoherent mess from start to end. Solving none of the plot points started in the previous movie and starting pretty much nothing in this movie.
All the new stars wars films are terrible and only Rogue one was not bad
ya, solo failed not because it was a bad movie (its OK) but because they seriously messed up the production of it leaving it to have to be a blockbuster hit to make any money. Ron Howard's brother isn't cheap after all.
Too goofy and too much "just improv" instead of actual direction, apparently.
they can't stop yet, we still haven't gotten our gritty edgelord Boba Fett movie!
I liked it because JJ didn't have any good answers for that shit either. You really think he had any idea of what Snoke was when he wrote TFA? Nah, he was there to be Not-Emperor and one of JJ's patented mystery boxes, and he sucked hard - so I was so happy when Rian Johnson just offed his pathetic ass and put Kylo (who is a much more interesting character) in charge of the First Order. Same with Rey's parentage - I absolutely love that we finally have a hero who isn't predestined by their lineage to be the chosen one. The force works in mysterious ways, and can chose whoever it wants. Finally, we can move past the fucking skywalkers and the rest of the OT cast - which was what they should have done from the beginning. Basically, while it's true that, as RLM said in their review, subversion alone doesn't make a movie good, it turned out I liked enough of the subversions Rian did that I enjoyed the movie overall, even if some of the joke didn't land and some of the plot points kind of fall apart repeated viewings. It still doesn't hold a candle to ANH or TESB, but I've come to accept we're never getting a Star Wars movie that comes close to that quality - not when the people running the show thing nostalgia bating is enough to make tons of money over and over again. TLJ is the only Disney Star Wars movie that tried something new, and even if it wasn't perfect, I still enjoyed it the most.
I seriously hope this doesn't ever become a thing.
TLJ made so many mistakes that it really is baffling how it can be considered good, almost everything except the visual spectacle itself just falls apart when you actually put any thought into it It doesn't even get the characters from TFA right, who *didn't* have an extended backstory and specific very defined characters traits - just take a look at General Hux and how he goes from a fairly naive yet confident and competent First Order general in TFA where the dynamic between him and Kylo was like they were two sides of the same coin, to a bumbling fool who exists in TLJ just for humour and heap laughs. The whole situation with Holdo was just utterly absurd, Poe was in the right but for some reason we're meant to think what he did was wrong - even though some of the bridge crew helped him when he tried to stop Holdo because no one knew what was going on. Poe being punished in the first place for stopping the dreadnought that was literally seconds away from destroying them all. The entire story arc with Rose and the "free the animals" thing. Phasma once again being wasted. Luke no longer being Luke because of reasons that don't earn that level of characterization change and then in the end doing literally nothing but buying them a few seconds and then dying, by coincidence everyone just happening to realize there might be a way out at the same time. The last few seconds of the movie really give the impression that it's all just a big incoherant mess. The Resistance base is gone and the First Order control the galaxy, their entire fleet is gone, no one came to help them, everyone except the dozen or so left in the Falcon has been killed in a day - from a few hundred to not even a 5th of that, and they have nothing left and no plans....and they're celebrating as if none of it mattered. The whole "You just don't like it because it subverted your expectations! Get over it!" defense some use is just a complete a non-argument because it misses that yes, subverting expectations can be a great storytelling device...but what TLJ does is subverts expectations by doing nothing with it. The movie doesn't bother with world building, or addressing significant plot points from TFA, or using the characters it has in a meaningful way, or actually telling a story that feels worthwhile. It feels more like a massive extended filler episode of a TV show. It's a poorly written, incoherent movie that moves from one set piece to another without putting much thought into what it's actually doing and hopes that you won't realize the huge leaps in logic or think about it beyond all the visual spectacle.
Rogue One was genuinely enjoyable. It did something original. It contributed a significant portion of solid timeline and plot. It introduced new, interesting characters and had glorious visuals. TFA was a super safe reboot with glorious visuals and boring rehashed story. TLJ was had glorious visuals and a really badly done story. I haven't seen solo. I gave up. I man cannot live on glorious visuals alone.
The problem isn't the amount of movies, is that they're not telling a larger Saga with them. Their Story Group sits around deciding on what set decorations and in-jokes will link stories in the special features, when they should be plotting the overall arch of the story. Even though I mostly like TFA and TJL, I still recognize that Disney has completely botched their sequel trilogy. They had one shot with Mark, Carrie, and Harrison, and so far, they've blown it.
realtalk as much as i detest anyone who wants to make Star Wars all edgy and miserable and "grounded", i would still really enjoy a more atmospheric, limited-scope action movie about Boba Fett just doing his job in the same vein as Dredd. like he's just hunting some mid-level crime boss across one or two planets.
See, this is the only argument I ever see raised to defend TLJ and you know what? It's a bullshit argument. Everyone would be happy with innovation if that innovation produced a good movie, not an incoherent mess that has no idea what it wants to be and what it wants to achieve. The plot is nonsensical and tonally the film is completely all over the place. You only get praise for "innovation" if you can achieve something worthwhile through it.
Also there are so many ways that TLJ could still be original using its base ideas if they were worked through. Like the whole Kylo and area thing rejecting the Jedi and Sith could have been an awesome twist on Star Wars. I didn’t even mind the whole Luke being a cynical ass, they just needed to give more reasoning. Like maybe he feels hopeless because the cycle of evil seems never ending. On top of him essentially steering Kylo to the dark side accidentally. They could’ve killed Finn, a main character in his triumphant win against the First Order. Snoke is whatever.
Sole reason I haven't given a crap about star wars in the last couple years, literally since I heard about them getting the rights before the force awakens came out. If no good games are going to be coming out for the franchise ever again, then I can safely write it all off.
Rogue One was terrible excluding some decent cinematography. Disney in general this year has been awful to me. A lot of their movies have made money, but Solo, Incredibles 2, Wrinkle in Time, Christopher Robin and Ant-Man and The Wasp were really not that good and with the Mary Poppins reboot, Wreck-It Ralph 2 and The Nutcracker coming out soon, it feels like Disney overload and it's all a bunch of shit. Infinity War was the only Disney film I enjoyed this year lol
Disney actually had a billion (yes, with a b) dollar market with Disney Infinity, but they had to cut it and a bunch of ABC projects when Shagnhai went overbudget. I see it like toys. A lot of people seem convinced Disney's going to buy Hasbro next, but it makes more sense financially to assume less risk and license their characters out rather than taking on the actual burdens of production.
I was actively into Disney Infinity when it was shutting down and even reached out to the heads on twitter urging them to make an offline version on Steam that we eventually got, and I pretty specifically recall the issue was that they had overproduced the figures to a point that they were operating at a loss. I remember reading that and thinking about the times I'd bitched about how Amiibos are almost NEVER in stock but Disney Infinity characters are never hard to find and don't get scalped. It made sense then. Heck even when I go into stores I still see loads of Disney Infinity figures for sale. A lot of people I've mentioned it to don't even realize it's been shutdown for years because the remaining overproduced stock still hasn't been moved. Nonetheless, Disney is as bad at picking who works on their games as they were at picking who works on their Star Wars movies.
Nah It's literally a two part saga. The third act in it is the second act of the overall saga. If we don't allow media structure to change, we'll get even more tired of the films than we are now.
