Devil May Cry 5 Lets You Spend Real Money To Upgrade Characters

I've seen the types of people who would want something like this, like i know for a fact people on Monster Hunter World want the ability to buy armor spheres with money even though in normally paced gameplay I've been able to max out all my armour upgrades.
This sort of thing is for people like that, and if it does make things difficult to get normally, they're gonna be dealing with a handful of shit from everyone.
aaand now im not buying it, cool
Too many people are complacent in this for the industry to change without publishers causing damage.
Is this confirmed anywhere? It was my biggest worry for this iteration given Capcom's lenience with Western developer strategies.
There's literally no reason to do this other than for fleecing, a much easier way that would require way less devtime would be to just increase the red orb rate or lower the cost of upgrades.
And....there goes my interest.

Looks like there's no need to worry. I hate microtransactions as much as the next guy but it's good to know that they won't hinder the overall game progression. If anyone is still worried, there you go. Personally I'd recommend adding this to the OP because some people are getting the wrong idea from this news.
And the shadow of war devs said that their microtransactions wouldn't affect gameplay either, how do people still believe people like this.
Well I guess we'll have to wait until the game comes out in March. Personally I think usual orb collection in DMC5 will be just like DMC4:SE (which also had microtransactions) and be normal. You do have a point, they could be bullshitting in the end, but I personally wanna think positively about this and hope for the best. I'm not trying to say that Capcom wouldn't do such a horrible practice, but more so that I don't think things right now are as bad as people are making them out to be, at least not at the moment.
HOWEVER, if the game comes out and buying Stinger for Dante costs around 100,000 red orbs or some shit, then you will absolutely find me complaining about this to Capcom along with the rest of the DMC fanbase. But until then, we'll just have to ride this one out until more info crops up or when the game hits store shelves.
Stop saying its optional, if youre selling it that means you want us to buy them no matter what
This does not pull my Devil Trigger at all.
DMC fans are getting quite defensive over this, calling it fake outcry.
From what I see they mostly argue "it won't affect gampeplay and its easy to get red orbs anyways".
I don't see how this is any argument how its still in any way acceptable.
Even if it actually has no impact, which its sole existence already contradicts, this is just leading into more and more greedy publishers.
Eventually it will affect the game, games suddenly tank in sales and the dev all the DMC fans try to defend will loose his job.
I guess people don't want to see the implications, some just say "oh I can't do anything anyways".
overton window, unfortunately
Denuvo's going to test that anti-"cheat", aren't they.
Remember how Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was awful because it had purchasable Praxis Kits? Whole game was blatantly designed around microtransactions.
They ruined that game with the grind, couldn't get anywhere without hours of farming. Only way I could beat it was after I shelled out real money for those Praxis Kits.
Oh wait, that wasn't the case. In fact, that was probably one the smallest problems with that game.
This is just red orbs, something that has never been particularly difficult to get.
Only exception would be DMC1 where you couldn't replay previous missions, so less experienced players might end up in a tricky spot when they couldn't afford items.
Not only that, they don't tie to progression.
This isn't Shadow of War or such, you're not grinding for crafting materials or random drops, the game doesn't require you to reach a certain rank before you can progress to the next part or massively inflate enemy stats.
You're not gonna get to the final mission and have the game demanding you to unlock everything before you can play it.
DMC is about skill, doesn't matter how many upgrades you buy, you won't just start playing better and automatically win with them.
DMC4SE had this type of stuff too. Nothing could have prevented them from tweaking values, lowering red orb or proud soul gain to encourage you to pay up, yet they didn't.
Besides, if you want to cheat, you can probably set your Red Orbs to max using Cheat Engine or just download a save file.
The game already has Easy difficulty and Automatic mode in it for more casual players so it's also not really aimed at them either.
This is just bait for weirdos who actually buy these things. For anyone else, it's just an irksome button on the menu that you'll never press.
There's always the concern of these types of microtransactions affecting progression by gameplay being meticulously designed to push players into coughing up cash to skip the grind.
However, they are also extremely easy and cheap to implement. They aren't anything new either.
Here's stuff from the Tales of series:

Dumb, expensive boosters to mess with the balance but the games are fully enjoyable without them.
Should you just never buy the games because these exist? Would they stop making these because you didn't buy the game? Probably not.
It's a scummy move that the suits wanted in the game, I wish it wasn't there because it's STUPID and it isn't a good follow up to the Subhuman controversy but I believe this is getting overblown way out of proportions just due to the concept of it being there.
It's also being spread around by people who have never even played the games so it ends up as a "this game is purely pay-to-win" narrative.
Of course, maybe Capcom will turn around and remove this if the complaints are loud enough but that decision is probably up to the stubborn Capcom Japan businessmen who probably won't budge an inch.
I'll play the game when it launches and see whether this ends up being yet another meaningless money trap for suckers which won't affect gameplay for non-payers or a genuine pay-to-have-fun barrier.
Regardless of how it's gonna be, I miss the feeling of getting a game and knowing I own it and all the content that's inside. To me, it's okay if a game gets DLC and you have to pay for it, but it's not okay if they've planned that from the start, they've got most of the resources done before the actual launch and then they want money for that, even more if they are locking gameplay elements (like in this case devil breakers). My first experience with this was probably with RAGE in 2011, I remember that they locked the fucking double barrel sawed off shotgun behind preorder and post launch dlc.
Double Barrel. In a Mad Max inspired game. In an Id Software game.
Yeah, as scummy as microtransactions like this are, they still pale in comparison to the shit companies like WB or EA have pulled. As far as we know, Capcom isn't blatantly sabotaging their game's balance in order to force everyone to buy micros - they're just hoping they'll snag a few whales who can't tell that the game isn't pay to win, is all.
Not true, 4SE tweaked the ammount of proud souls you got to give you more than you got in the oiriginal release making the game less if a grind. If they really wanted to exploit the microtrabsaction system they would have kept the ammount the same or even lowered it.
why do you trust them when they have direct incentives to gimp the game
In hindsight, there's probably a lot better ways to offer "ways for people to skip". Paying is probably the scummiest way and to be honest with the way companies have been going, I'd rather not trust them to not fuck it up.
Cause the last time they had incentive to gimp the game, DMC4:SE, they did the opposite and increased the amount of proud souls you got at the end of the missions compared to the original release to make the game less grindy. They even let you share proud souls between the different sets of characters so you only had to grind once instead of three times to unlock all the moves. If Capcom really wanted to be scummy they would have kept the amount of proud souls you get the same as in the original release or even lower it while forcing you to repeat the grind with all the characters.
While this is really dumb from a moral perspective, I've come across a lot of games where the microtransaction implementation is so silly that there's barely a point to it.
For example Gran Turismo 6, where it'll take you like 10 minutes of just normal in-game play to get what $30 would get you in terms of cash.
...No? Fans of the series have straight-up said that they agree that this whole microtransactions thing is dumb and that they wish it wasn't in the game at all, myself included. What people are trying to say is that this won't affect the overall game. Buying red orbs to get all the moves won't instantly make you a better player, it's knowing how to use those moves and practicing them that makes you better. DMC is easily one of the most execution-heavy action game series I've ever played, it's not about just gaining moves and winning easily/
So far there's a deal to get about 100,000 red orbs via paying money, but also there's evidence showing you can get about 30k~50k worth of red orbs through just playing one level of the game at a time, depending on the score rank you achieve at the end. What this means is that you can still get a good, sizeable amount of orbs through normal play time.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, it absolutely sucks that these microtransactions are even a thing. I don't want them, the DMC fanbase doesn't want them, and the gaming populace in general doesn't want them, but people are taking things way too seriously at the moment until there's concrete evidence that things are being gimped. I'm not saying Capcom wouldn't do something this shady, because they've done PLENTY of shady stuff in the past, but right now things are tame. Who knows, maybe stuff like moves will cost a ton to obtain and people are in the right to complain, but we don't know that yet! That's why I keep suggesting that we wait for more info. It's good that people are voicing their concerns about this situation, it shows that we want the best for this game, but people going off and saying they won't be buying the game because of this and spewing their unconfirmed notions about the game being "pay-to-win" is just nonsense right now.
Yeah from what i can tell based on that and other gameplay videos, its probably just going to be a DMC4:SE situation.
Idk what you guys are complaining about, they have done this the last 2 games. It's completely unnessesary, just play the game and stop complaining lmao
i know this sounds like ridiculous faith, but it's because they don't have to. the game doesn't need to be unbalanced across the board for microbuyers to pop up, it's already unforgiving as shit to new players. players that do poorly will get lower red orb payouts due to the ranking system, just like all the previous games, and those players will be incentivized to microtransact. i've been playing through the games for the first time to catch up for 5, and they already ask if i want to coward down to easy mode if i die too much. now, they'll probably ask if i'm a big coward who thinks money will solve my poor execution.
now, i don't agree with the practice. i'm going to look at the "buy red orbs now!!!!" button out of the corner of my eye with passing disgust. but i sincerely don't expect it to be directly detrimental to the gameplay.
tbh shit like these are so easy to implement I'd be surprised if big companies don't implement them in some way. They cost nothing to make and people who were going to buy these games are still buying it anyway as long as it isn't a huge fuck up like EA/WB. Anyway just wait and see how this will turn out in the end is still an option so I am not letting this one incident hurt my expectation of the game that much.
Between this and the preorder/deluxe edition stuff, it's turned me off enough that I'm no longer willing to buy this at full price at release, since I know I won't be getting everything the game has to offer.
It's breaking my trust to a point where I no longer care.
I don't trust any adult that uses ^_^
they always say that. Everyone introducing loot boxes or "unlock everything' dlc always say "it's about player choice!" and then they structure the game into a kafkha trap to incentivise people into buying it like rainbow six.
How does it feel being a pr mouthpiece for scumbags? I hope they pay you at least.
