Valve renames Artifact card named Crack the Whip that affects black cards

Do explain what you mean because I'm pretty sure I'm not trying to say valve is racist by playing homonym sub and connect the dots on a trading card
How is anyone here overreacting other than geel&gang? no one has called for any action besides someon on the first page saying it would be better if valve had more diversity (he also said he was glad twitter didn't overreact) and me saying that if they accidentally use racist puns in their cards they ahould have an editor, and then 40 posts of people claiming we're overreacting and trying for stupid zingers.
Invoke Prejudice made it past the Wizard's radar in 1994 and was intentionally made by a nationalist artist, hasn't been printed in ages and is on a blacklist and can't be used in traditional tournaments, only Legacy, Vintage and Commander (house rules)
Actually I think invoke prejudice is a pretty good card and the artist just happened to be a shady dude, and crack the whip isn't even bad, but trying to deny that its a race pun is just outright dumb.
ok
There were some people in here calling Valve racist, I think that's an overreaction. But yeah there were a lot more people being upset that other people were upset.
I like how you assume that because other people agree with me that they're a "gang"
Maybe it's just common sense that what you said was some stupid shit
I'm not mad that valve let it slip in a card (even if intentional, depicting slavers isn't an innately bad thing) I'm more mad at the people on this forum playing the dogwhistle game and acting like it's some giant stretch to see the double entendre.
Nobody's acting like they can't see how it looks racist.
They're just capable of putting an iota of thought into it and realizing that just because something can be interpreted as racist doesn't mean the creator needs to be criticized as if it is.
you forgot that they tagged an indonesian man for making it lol
Speak like a normal person please.
im so glad we're living in ((((((((((current year)))))))))))))
I think people find this fucked up for the exact wrong reason.
It's not fucked up because they put the kid in a hoodie that says monkey, it's fucked up because the kid can't wear that cool hoodie without a bunch of sensitive sallies screaming that it's racist because they can see the connection.
This thread is a treat to read.
This idea that minorities are human smoke detectors for anything that could be perceived as problematic is fucking bonkers to me. Yes in the context of algorithms, if you don't test it on people that look a certain way then the algorithm wont know how to react to people that look like that. Makes sense.
But in situations like this.. I dont really how to describe this.. You guys ever have friends in school that were insufferable to talk to because they would get triggered by dirty sounding words or phrases and expected you to also notice? Like you can't say something as innocuous as "Wooh, hole in one!" without them pointing out that you said the word hole? Well if the situation truly was an accident, then its entirely possible that a black person DID see thing and not make the connection, just like I might say the phrase "it goes in the thing really fast" without giggling because I didn't even catch what I had said.
I think you have a misguided idea of how people in minority groups identify. People will joke all the time that they accidentally walked out the house looking like a walking stereotype because they didn't even make the connection to what they were holding/wearing/eating. Because to them it was just food or a piece of clothing or whatever.
No. There wasn’t.
Manufactured controversy, it’s not a huge deal. It was a funny oversight and they fixed it.
This thread is the place where people were legitimately upset about it.
well they can bugger off with this non issue bollocks then
One don't just post Valve "news" in Facepunch forums without stirring up the hornet nest.
Your utter fucking lack of self-awareness is baffling.
hey that's racist because black people are stereotyped as having afros omg
See - that's how unintentional racism can happen and it's really stupid to imply that diversity would somehow have magically prevented a mistake like this from happening. I understand that diversity may, to a certain extent, mitigate risks on subjects like this, but I think you're totally misinterpreting this as something bigger than it needs to be.
Is it really though? Assuming you are indeed referring to crack the whip, I get the exact opposite impression that this seemed an earnest mistake. The only 'controversial' thing about this story, in my eyes, is people trying to imply theres some undercover dogwhistling operation coming out of Valve.
Nah, sometimes mistakes just happen.
Doesn't matterwhat ethnicity you are, this is only s problem when someone sho is racist makes it s problem.
I can't wait for the "Spick and Span" card.
Just looks like people are looking for controversy tbqh.
To be honest when I first saw this I never registered the whole whip and black hero thing and I just laughed at the idea of tweeting out entire paragraphs about card mechanics.
nah, it's just that people are dumb
there are plenty of legitimate reasons to be mad at valve, this isn't one of them
So Valve makes a card with some unintentional racism, one person points out how that doesn't look good for the company (and suggest a new name) and another saying the card is fine mechanically and then agrees with the first person. Valve then changes the name to something (that IMO makes a lot more sense for what it does) and now we're getting triggered about how people are offended?
And jeez that's one bad article
I just thought it was hilarious, I didn't want all this shitflinging. I posted it because it's funny first and foremost
crackhead
