that these girls have their self esteem damaged by cat callers so often
It's less "damaging" and more onto the scale of really fucking annoying.
I used to walk to PE with some of my friends (who were girls in a mixed school) and they'd sometimes get cat called (they were tomboys for god's sake!) and it would just piss us all off because it would bring unwanted attention to all of us because some muckle headed twat thinks it's funny to shout sexual remarks across a road to a group half his age.
It's absolutely abysmal here. My partner and other loved ones have been harassed more times than I can remember.
Just in the 6 years I've known my partner, she's had:
a guy try to force himself on her by asking her to play a game of rock paper scissors for a kiss;
she was approached by a man in a club who started hitting on her literally seconds after I walked away from her to go to the bathroom;
at a party once she was drinking with a friend and some guy kept trying to get his hands into her clothes to rub her stomach and god knows what else (she was wearing a kigurumi);
at a convention we were just walking out of a panel room once and some guy walking in while we're pushing through the door is like, "Can I take her back up to my room and bleed her out in the bathtub?";
She's also gotten inappropriate comments on her body unprovoked and has also gotten dms on twitter multiple times of people asking for feet pics.
Other friends have literally just been outside our apartment walking their dog and gotten catcalled by men across the street.
There are countless other things I can't even remember at this moment, but it really is fucking ridiculous and disgusting just how common this shit is and how many men feel like it's their god given right to approach or speak to women in explicit ways without even knowing anything about them.
I feel awful that the only thing protecting my partner from that in most cases is just me merely being with her.
You really don't realize how bad it is until you start paying attention.
