I say I have my degree, but I techninically don't because of an internship and a professor that blew up in my face. I have 5 years under my belt with a 3.2 GPA. I don't wanna get into whining. And I'm going to be signing up for a 2 year program at my local community college for welding, try to learn all of it. I'll come out to around 4,000 dollars but like I said, I'm waiting for my inheritance.
Like rationing, bans, sanctions, and restrictions on reproduction. Anyone who thinks this is a problem that can be solved by people choosing to become vegan and not drive is kidding themselves.
High hopes, bad weather and drought can create harvest fails even here. And when it is happening everywhere nations stop exporting food to feed their own nations. Then its just matter of when the next catastrophe hits to create a famine.
I would encourage all in here worried about the future to look at the steady state economy solutions that exist and to make informed decisions as there are many post-industrial economic solutions that seek to adjust and curtail our consumptive capabilities so that we are better stewards. I'm just a proponent of Steady State but there are other solutions.
Cut it out with the pathetic, fatalistic bullshit. Now is the time to act to prevent collapse from happening in the first place. Not to crawl around gathering supplies so that we can survive in 40 years in damp shelters, with no purpose other than waiting out death. Us westerners are the ones with the most power to change things, to hinder and mitigate the upcoming damage. It is our responsibility to do all we can to limit the impact of our civilization's mistakes, and save lives. Now stop moping about, start informing yourself about what you can do to do your part. Rally, organize, and do what you can to make a change, whether individually within the realm of your every day life, or as a group to put the required pressure on governments and businesses around the world, or to develop ways and systems for communities to prosper despite the upcoming changes, in a sustainable manner. We've got 10 years, better make them count.
not so much saying that technology is bad, just that it is the more difficult way to try to fix things with more technology.
Good quote from Ready Player One (novel): " ... what this all means is that life is a lot tougher than it used to be, in the Good Old Days, back before you were born. Things used to be awesome, but now they’re kinda terrifying. To be honest, the future doesn’t look too bright. You were born at a pretty crappy time in history. And it looks like things are only gonna get worse from here on out. Human civilization is in ‘decline.’ Some people even say it’s ‘collapsing.’ “You’re probably wondering what’s going to happen to you. That’s easy. The same thing is going to happen to you that has happened to every other human being who has ever lived. You’re going to die. We all die. That’s just how it is. "
i think i should go back home and start a farm
Humans survived the Ice Age which was just as bad if not worse. Humans survived Earth being mostly inhospitable in that time. Not to say that we shouldn't put any effort into mitigating the effects of what's to come, because putting effort into curbing this is an absolute must. What I'm saying is, please stop doomsaying and acting so hopeless. The more hopeless you act, the more people will want to curl up and die and not do anything, which might bring about an even worse scenario. Even if the dumbasses in power don't step down, that's no reason to stop fighting. I understand the anxiety and depression associated with this, but we can't lose sight of the fighting we need to do to stop or heavily mitigate climate change.
Yes, both are necessary. Both levels need to change. It was more on that people choose to despair and not do a thing because 'it wouldn't change anything'.
humans will obviously survive, it is more a question about our society
And what the fuck can we do? I am literally just worrying about staying physically healthy and getting into college right now, many others are in extreme poverty, most people dont have the capacity to give a shit. Goddamn I gotta stop reading the news and getting worked up and just focus on myself.
Are you out there protesting for restrictions on family sizes, meat rationing, car use limitations, etc.?
this is why i am currently studying energy and electricity policy, so i can be a better advocate for decentralization of the power grid and removing our reliance on massive generation plants. with all the studies and research i have done, no matter what we do if we want to go green energy we necessarily have to reduce the amount of power we consume.
If you focus on what people can do personally rather than trying to get governments to take action you severely minimize the scale of action required.
Since when has protesting meant shit in the 21st century??
You know Axel, I'm sorry for my depressed posts in the other thread. I have a habit of feeling hopeless, but I don't want to go down without a fight either. I'm trying to spread this news as far as possible, and will try to abstain from meat from now on. Fuck this shit, I'll do my part.
It means a lot more than just worrying on the internet.
Family size restriction is retarded, because reproduction is a human right and we can achieve this without violating them. Most Western countries are already in population decline anyway, France is the exception but it's stable. I don't see how we'd achieve meat rationing in our current capitalistic system. Perhaps a heavy tax would work. Either way, we can already do a lot through volunteer meat rationing. We just need to get the message across that you don't need to cut meat out entirely. Doing a day per week without meat is a start. Car use limitations already exist here, but that's a municipal thing, so it vary from city to city. Not really something that you can organize a protest around, it's more a matter of voting in green local politicians. But yes, there's a climate change protest this Saturday in Paris, and I plan to go.
The best way to get a cut back on our heavy consumption is applying a tariff or tax or the actually calculable damage that the item in question causes to the planet.
i don't know if we can achieve what needs to be done without either a massive reduction in population or overt authoritarianism.
We are approaching the point where some human rights must be ignored. Having a child will cancel out any carbon emissions you've managed to avoid producing. Rationing? Not possible in a capitalistic system? How did the WW2 Allies manage it then? And getting the message out isn't good enough at this point, we cannot afford people either not hearing it or not heeding it. As for car usage, how many green local politicians have as their platform a complete ban of cars from their city? These sorts of heavy limitations are absolutely necessary. We need protests to get politicians to do the unpopular things that nevertheless have to be done.
If everyone in the world had the living standards of the average Chinese citizen, our natural resource consumption wouldn't overtake their renewability, and a single planet would be enough for us all to live sustainably. So it's technically totally possible for us to live sustainably without a reduction in population.
The thing is with elections everything unpopular done to reduce emissions will make it easier for people to get in power and reverse everything. Banking on cultured meat immediately ending the livestock industry.
Mind, driving fertility down in vulnerable countries by education and contraception can avoid lot of misery.
having a single child will not cancel out the avoided carbon emissions, two children and more is when you get to that territory
Just avoiding red meat is a good start. I'm an avid meat eater and I've avoided red meat and gone for white meat for quite a while now considering the damage cows do to the environment in large quantities.
I'm looking at buying 180 acres in the mountains. Maybe even start a cult to help finance it. The land is actually called Mount Carmel, no joke, I could legit start a cult
Time for people to stop fearmongering GMO foods. We're going to need heat and drought resistant crops
Let's see... I'm 22 now and I've got another 22 years until the end times in which case I'll be 44. Meh, I'll at least be able to live a half decent life so that's nice.
