Superhumans Are Coming ........... And That's A Good Thing!
I want to think one step ahead and imagine what happens next after we are all modified. Or augmented, since it will not stop there and most of us want to modify our bodies entirely or attach it to some sort of enhancing exosuit. I need to burst the balloon for a moment here to put put my vision of a far future: Once we all are "attractive" you will not be satisfied when projecting your image and think about what others think about you. What is attractive for *you* in the pursuit of your own image? A movie actor? A video game character ideals? A phylosophical mindset? Or just learn to be more sincere to yourself and by yourself and not care about how others sees you? Since attaction is subjective, the obsession for constant changes to fit into a social group could lead many people into identity crisis. Everyone being a 'superhuman' means nobody will be a 'superhuman'. It is the new genotype and phenotype standard of our species, we are all the same and being this flexible means that nobody is excelling. Yes, people without modifications could be forced to change to stay in the competence to avoid being left behind. But where are your superhuman powers to save you when your power is being super depresed because you heard on the tv that a certain infamous and now biologically immortal political figure got elected for the 80th time after 600 years in power. Lack of diversity. Even with the near infinite freedom that gene editing can propose you within our biologic limitations, most of us will only live up to one or two predilected social outcomes. I don't need to detail this. Questioning your actions. Not at first but maybe the feeling of leaving behind a part of you after each modification. You are now unrecognizable and far away of the human you once saw in the mirror. I would love to read more points of view about a future where the concept of gene editing is as normal as wearing pants. Don't get me wrong. I'm not going for the bad side of implications of gene editing. I also want my eyelashes fixed from touching my eyes every morning, a minimal amount of inteligence to not follow stupid and suicidal challenges on internet, and have fingergun lasers just to be able to reply with "that is where you are wrong" to the unedited masses.
Genetherapy is literally already a thing. I know it's natural to be scared of the future but the fact that we will soon be able to edit out life threatening or ruining diseases is a good thing in my opinion. People are scared that only the rich will be able to do it but if you look at how cheap genetic decoding has gotten in the last 20 years alone it's almost certain that editing your childs genes will become affordable to the average family. It's simply not fair that some people are born with huge genetic disadvantages in life and I see nothing wrong with deciding that you don't want your child to deal with such things. It's no more "playing god" than the other amazing ways we have managed to extend natural human life or improve it.
