@Hail Satan So you explained that Samurai Jack and Avatar are ok because they're the main character or their backstories are more fleshed out, but I dont see what correlation that has to why it's ok for their voice actors to be different races than the characters.
Like, I'd get it if the only reason Apu was on the show was to make fun of Indians, but even you agree that he's a well fleshed out character. Hank Azaria isn't using the accent as a joke, hes using it because hes an actor, playing the role of an indian man. Same way that, since hes playing a Japanese man, Phil Lamarr puts on a Japanese accent when playing Jack.

I think it's different because Indian people have articulated that it's a problem. I personally am of Jewish descent and my father has told me stories of him being subject to anti-semitic taunts while he was growing up in 60s england. I wouldn't be entire happy if Fagin the Jew was a character on the simpsons, even if he was given a lot of depth and nuance.

Apu is arguably one of the most complex and interesting characters on the show. Hell I'd watch a fucking spinoff about him running his store instead of The Simpsons.

Again, to play Devil's advocate, since so many of you are claiming that every other ethnic character in the show is a racist stereotype, which ones, exactly? Because while I never watched the Simpsons religiously, I did grow up enjoying the show, and Apu really strikes me as the only recurring example. Well, okay, not strictly true, there's Groundskeeper Willie. And... that's it, I think.
Speaking as an Indian immigrant to Canada myself, I always found Apu mildly offensive as a character. Not least because you would not believe the number of Americans and Canadians I encountered growing up who genuinely thought that's what Indian people talked like, and kept quoting him at me like it was supposed to be funny. I did really enjoy some of his arcs, though. And it's not like I was ever pissed off enough to complain about it. But if they should choose to strike him from the show, I honestly am not that mad about it. We're long past the point where he's funny, anyway.
