I don't think he looks too bad but the hair is too shiny and, well, wig-like. Even if it was kept in a full ponytail and not draped over his shoulders like it is. As it stands, it's not really believable hair at all to me. As well, i know book Geralt is clean shaven, but even a little stubble would go a LONG way here, as well as a few scars.
I made an edit of how I think he should have looked (it's a little lazy but whatever) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/229153/cc3518fe-d581-464b-b6f9-b9c888bcccaf/Henry_Geralt_Edit.gif
Just kinda putting it here again because the cosmetics is not what's really wrong here, it's the info they transport and the info is that this either a badly chosen teaser or that someone did not get the character at all.
couple things tho, Geralt is attractive in the books (although is a bit lankier than CDPR's interpretation) and not nearly as old as in the games (they pretty much doubled his age for the games). He's in his 40s-60s in the books (exact age is never given, but hinted at). Although Sapkowski has narrowed it a bit and said he's 50+ (didn't narrow it by much). In the books we know Yennefer is 90, and that Geralt is younger than her. In any case he's wildly young for Witcher standards. And while book Geralt does his fair amount of sulking, he's not all that worn - he just wants to do his job.
It's going to be tough for them to get past people's game based expectations. I wonder how well it will do with people who aren't familiar with the games or books to begin with.
Well, only time will tell. Once its released we can officially shit on it if its terribad. I think he'll do a decent job honestly (I hope).
Scars. Lots and lots.
Doesn't look slavic and his skin isn't pasty white.
If he was whiter and was scarred to shit, it certainly would be pretty good tbh. Don't think you can make it that much better outside of a different bone structure.
I'm glad they're not using Wild Hunt's version of Geralt. It tells me they actually care a little bit about the books and aren't cashing in on what's more recognizable. Tho i do wish they did more with his design. He kinda just looks like Elric again
they're taking the hobbits to novigrad
Not having a beard may be more faithful to the books, but it really doesn’t work with Henry Cavill because he has such a distinctive butt chin. Sure, he pulled off Superman perfectly. But no shit; he’s a handsome and built American bloke portraying the definitive, handsome and built American superhero. Put an actually good wig on him, let him grow some facial hair, and edit in the correct eyes, and Henry Cavill could still rescue the look.
He is actually British.
Imo the biggest problem is the wig (and maybe the eyes). The wig looks cheap and worse than what I've seen random cosplayes wear. A little stubble might help a bit as well even if it isn't faithful to the books.
I know Sapkowski is working on this, but fuck faithful to the books. Having read the books and played the games, I think it's clear TW3 version of Geralt being pasty white with scars and a scraggly beard just looks right. The books are great, but I think it's clear that Sapkowski's vision for Geralt just doesn't translate as well to a visual medium as CDPR's later vision of him, whatever the budget. It's why the cosplay Geralts who look better than this have beards, scars and mutant eye contacts. That said they probably don't want to force Cavill to act with tons of props and shit masking his face, that and Sapkowski is probably pushing the costume designers to make him look not like game Geralt out of spite because that's just the kind of man he is.
I get being faithful to be the books but one simply doesn't unsee W3 Geralt. I'm hoping this is just an OMEGA early look and it'll look way better in the actual show.
Nah. The book characterizations are much better than the games. I love the games, they're some of my all time favorite RPGs but they're not perfect adaptations of the series (F. ex., the Geralt age thing I mentioned before). Because its the only version of the character you've ever been exposed to. This was our other version of Geralt, from Wiedzmin https://resizing.flixster.com/N0LVncSO26ISfji40-KLhElQadA=/300x300/v1.bjs1NDYxNjk7ajsxNzg3MTsxMjAwOzEyODA7NzIw We also have the various book covers: Wiedźmin dookoła świata It's not all that far off from many of the representations on covers that aren't using game artwork. lmao get out of here with this shit. it's not what he's like, at all. While I think suing for royalties was a dumb move, he has praised the games as being good for a long time and the whole royalties thing seems to be purely business. And yes, he doesn't think adapdations can live up to the original work, which I disagree with, but that doesn't equal "he thinks video games are bad and is just trying to shit on poor cdpr".
Probably better than most people who just played the games honestly because they won't shut up about how he doesn't look exactly like TW3 Geralt
that geralt is so much better than henry cavill's though. the hair is real, it doesnt look like plastic. that's also why most people are not down with this version of geralt, it genuinely looks like cavill with a wig and a bad costume.
I hope thats just a work in progress
maybe in raw looks, but his acting was meh. but all we have right now is a sneak-peek where I'm 99% sure they didn't even finish his makeup for it.
Yeah I'm aware that series is pretty mediocre and I imagine Netflix's will be better on most level, I'm also confused why they'd show his character now if it's not representative of how he'll look.
It’s not uncommon to show off early makeup and costume tests for projects like this. It’s an easy way to generate buzz Besides, even if it’s kind of rough, there’s one important thing I’m getting out of this- Cavill’s definitely got the body language down for Geralt, at least in this short clip. It’s subtle, but it’s there
atleast he looks somewhat okay compared to the casting of Triss lmao. is hollywood afraid of gingers?
could be worse https://i.redd.it/4r70kd6lsqb01.jpg
Triss has "chestnut" hair in the books. So like https://i.pinimg.com/originals/26/fc/94/26fc947329fadcda3063471578930f8f.jpg instead of bright red like CDPR did.
and chestnut as well as the bright red look much better than frilly black hair for triss. infact the actress looks far from what i imagine many triss looked like when reading the book. but hey she's a minority so lets just give netflix a free pass and cheer on them for being so progressive instead of following the books. this also brings me back to Fringilla who uses magic to give herself a paler skin colour as to avoid blushing when Geralt is mentioned. i suppose Netflix-Fringilla took the radical route of magic and changed her entire ethnicity instead? while we're at it, why are we not allowed to complain about these things? or even Geralt so far. His hair is a mess and he just looks like Henry Cavill doing an alright cosplay so far. i sure am hoping it is better in the tv-show but i am not impressed with a majority of the casting choices. even 'Cahir', the aged knight who has seen too much shit looks like a bland prettyboy they got from engineering class at Oxford. even Joey Batey as Dandelion/Jaskier looks strange. his eyes are far too piercing and almost angry looking. He's not a charming, soft bard. Atleast not so far.
do you not know what hair straightening or hair dye is or something? and can black people suddenly not blush? also joey batey looks fine, he studied medieval and modern language at Cambridge and also knows how to play the lute. So his background is sorta like Jaskier’s and he can already play the instrument which is a huuuuge plus. Altho the one thing I liked out of Wiedzmin was Jaskier’s casting in that, but I think Batey will do a fine job.
okay so, if its not my headcanon you're saying a witcher show starring entirely blue people would be fine because sapkowski doesnt put too much focus on skin colours? why do you keep focusing on this "headcanon" nonsense? if i read War & Peace im not imagining Michael Clarke Duncan as Pierre. if I'm reading Lord of the Rings I don't envision Takeshi Kitano as Aragorn just as if I am reading Beasts of No Nation I don't picture Michael Cera as Agu. if you honestly, absolutely believe Triss, Yennefer & Fringilla's casting are true and fine by the book then hey good for you. but i disagree entirely and cannot fathom why you insist on believing so.
