Did we watch the same video? It clearly folds from one size to another, Westworld-style.
I don't get why people need to be so cynical about it. It's a prototype and a proof of concept, and foldable tech is something that we'll definitely end up having in the future so it's cool to see it in its earliest forms
Dildo and tablet in one
stick a string up someone's ass
they are now a phone
It's interesting to see new technologies / designs making an appearance. It might be a novelty for now but there could be a practical use for it in the future.
that's because it's in a case lol, they're hiding the actual design of the hardware for now.
this thing was unveiled at a developer's conference so the hardware is clearly not the primary focus here as this tech has been around for a while now, and samsung are by no means the first to adopt it. this is focusing on the fact that it exists, and that a significant manufacturer knows it exists and plans on making use of it, so now developers can get their asses into gear to start updating their apps to support foldable screens. similarly, google announced that android will be officially supporting foldable screens, so i'd say it's pretty likely that a few other manufacturers have also been toying around with the idea behind the scenes.
I thought it was pretty cool, there are some pratical uses cases of a tablet that you can fold into your pocket, you guys are being way too pessimistic.
I kind of want a Razer 2 just because of the hard edges and slightly thicker design. And that's pretty much the only reason
Without a case on my phone, the fucking thing is hard to pick up off a surface. They're too damn thin
Obligatory wrap the flex phone around your dick and set it to vibrate and call it
this would be terrible ergonomically
easily swap from phone size to tablet size
Everything is smooth glossy surfaces and touchscreens nowadays, ergonomics aren't the focus in consumer electronics that much.
A smooth touchscreen device is fine, tapping a floppy piece of plastic film hanging out of a rod isn't
the only way to have it fairly rigid would be to have the two rods with the film in between, but then you wouldn't be able to use it without putting it on a table since both of your hands would be busy holding the sides
I remember back in 2008 my engineering teacher was hyping the Nokia Morph up to us all, I was so ready to see flexing screens 2 or so years later but woah, 11 years later and we're finally at the point of this design becoming feasible.
Here's the concept video I was shown for the Morph, really cool stuff even still.

I don't understand why all the phones are so similar. Like, I know the tech is matured at this point and there's an optimal form that has been achieved, but still; the same can be said for PC cases which are just a box where your PC parts go in, and yet there is a metric shit-ton of choices for PC cases. You have cases of all colors, glossy cases, matte cases, transparent cases, cases with LEDS on them, cases with useless shapes that only exist to make the case cooler, cases with nixie tubes, simple cases with one color and cases with colorful racing car stripes on them; Why can phones not be that varied too? Why phones with transparent backs, why not phones that are shaped to accomodate your fingers or sit better on your palm, why not phones with more LEDs than a freaking Razer mouse? Why does every phone now have to be glossy black/white/gold, rectangular and as thin as they can be manufactured, with rounded edges?
Personally I'd blame it on the market being dominated by only three or four brands that just play it safe and are afraid of trying different things that are more niche, but I'm not sure.
Market research from the top companies probably directs designs of phones; people like uniformity in this regard. Uniqueness isn't something that's profitable.
Doesn't excuse copycat phone notches, but not all phones look 'exactly' the same.

That's what I thought of, too. Ideally, I'd have a folding phone actually fold out in three, sorta like that Morph concept. As in, the outer screen maintains continuity with the two inner screens, so that when you unfold it in a sort of Z-shape, all three segments are used at once rather than turning off the outer screen in tablet mode. A 16:9 ratio in all three segments would also result in a near-16:9 ratio for the unfolded screen, as 16:9 is close to √3. So height-to-folded-width would be about the same as unfolded-width-to-height. As in:

I wish flip-phones would come back tbh. I was hoping it would be the size of a regular smartphone, but fold horizontally into a square

There was this Sharp phone that was a smartphone/flip-phone, with a rotate-able touchscreen called the Sharp Aquos, only avaliable in Japan, and at the time it was released I REALLY wanted that thing but nowadays its specs are just way too outdated I think
woah what's the one with the clear back? that's hot as fuck.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. I should say that I was kind of cheating when I chose that, because the 'motherboard' visible inside the phone is actually a plastic insert that covers the real motherboard, maybe for water proofing. IDK.

When are we gonna start calling mobile phones data pads and embrace our cyberpunk future?
Im still rocking this DS wannabee

Because it's easy to be cynical for these children without even giving a single thought to their dumb responses.
"Oh, the display is going to wear down from all the folding lol" - oh yeah, some random internet user comes up with such a possibility, as if a 449.000 people company who has been developing this device wasn't thinking about it.
"Oh, it's impractical because it's so big". - oh yeah, think back how fat mobile phones were in the 80s and 90s. And now look where we are
"What use does it have" - oh yeah, possibly fighting the stupid phablet trend by giving users both a 5 inch screen that can be used with one hand while also giving a tablet with a bigger screen
This seems to be a common theme with internet cynics. Seriously, what makes some random online nobody think that a potential issue they thought up in an instant - seconds after reading a product reveal - could possibly have been overlooked by a team of professional engineers who'd been developing the product for god knows how long? How smart do you doofs think you are?
