E.T., we’re home - Earth’s “porch light” to attract alien astronomers

It's a waste of energy and resources to use it to let aliens know we're here. A high powered array of lasers would be so much better for launching solar sail probes out of the solar system

While I don't think we'll ever visit an alien civilization, or that they'll ever visit us, because the distances are just so vast, it IS kind of scary to think about.
Do you really want to advertise yourself, a species unable to put people on its closest planet, to a civilization that can cross the galaxy?
Then again it could be 10,000 years before the light is seen, so
What if there's hostile aliens and friendly aliens? I mean how do we know if there is or not?
I always wondered if maybe there's some space wars going on we don't know about.
Like how we deal with terrorists today, I wonder if there's terrorists aliens and is
there a government of aliens trying to stop them.
there is no point in speculating on the values of an alien civilization because we're incapable of comprehending how they might think. the possible motives to explore and seek out other intelligent life could be essentially anything.
I could die happy if I knew, somewhere out there, there are hot asari babes.
As for the whole "impending alien invasion": in case we're invaded, and they're dumb enough to land and attack on the ground, well, we might not have lasers, but we're an insanely resilient and war-like
species. We might not have laser weapons (yet), but we still have some incredibly destructive weapons at hand, not to mention plain ingeniuty regarding how to make basic weaponry. And if all else fails, we've our trusty flight-or-fight mechanism. We might lose, but fuck if we ain't gonna shed blood (or alien goo? Who knows if they even bleed) for every inch of ground.
He was warning against sending a message before we've gotten our collective shit together. At this point though if they bring fusion power and advanced medicines with them I'd be more than happy to sell out my fellow hu-mans because we just can't get our shit together and seem to be bent on spreading our shit all over everything and everyone.
Psychopaths are inherently destructive. For humans we advanced despite the efforts of psychopaths. We wouldn't have made it as far if we were all psychopaths. The real issue with an extraterrestrial species would be whether they just consider us indigenous wildlife or actually consider us an intelligent species. If it's the former then they could see no issues with pushing us out and moving in, the same as we do with local wildlife.
I doubt it's a matter of getting wiped out honestly. I think it's far more likely they stagnate. They either advance to a point where all their needs are immediately met so very few are even interested in exploring and colonizing other planets or they get to a point like we seem to be approaching where their society collapses due to not taking care of their planet and they just endlessly repeat cycles of advancement and collapse.
Something that always perplexes me is the concept that anything could be stolen from earth of value to a species capable of flying to us.
There's no evidence that rocky planets are rare at all, we've found actual hundreds with our shitty telescopes
Knowledge and curiosity may be universal regardless of intention.
No new materials compared to your home planet? Analize technology, biodiversity, and gathering million of years of historical record could be enough motivation.
And God help us if their fist contact with us is with a fanatic conspiracionist. They will set us on fire after traveling half of a galaxy just to hear about the stereotype used by attention seekers portraying them as a species doomed to probe asses forever.
When there is no material scarcity, value comes from the unique. Spices, art, maybe specific proteins, or maybe even some property or trait that we can't measure or completely overlook as insignificant.
