• Advocacy group wants people with Down syndrome added to endangered species list

She’s concerned that more people are terminating pregnancies when they find out their child has Down syndrome. “I don’t think it’s positive at all because if people with Down syndrome are terminated, what’s next? What other group with disabilities are going to be then targeted. We are playing God and for me, I don’t think that’s right.” Oh for the love of God, fuck off with this bullshit nonsense.
I guess I'm the asshole for not wanting to bring a person into this world that has to possibly suffer for the rest of their life.
I hate the "playing god" argument because it literally has no substance or else you'd use literally any other argument
The bible isn't even anti-abortion as far as I can tell. It doesn't treat the unborn as equals.
This reminds me of an article about roughly the same thing, and it featured a TV actress saying, "my son has downs! It's been easy to raise him!" And, of course, if you have the resources to raise a kid with down syndrome, sure, go ahead, but that's not the reality many families face. Presenting this like whether you want pandas to go extinct or not is horrendous.
"I'm ok with damning people to a dysfunctional half existance and everyone around them for whom they'll be an extraordinary burden, just so long as my hypothetical unfounded grandstanding principals are preserved" Y'know, i'm convinced. What right did we have to eradicate polio? It's a living organism, who are we to arrogantly claim sovereign authority to wipe it out? #justiceforpolio
An inherently selfish ideology. "Fuck over other people so they have to hang out with me and the rest of the people who were fucked over." They know that if given the opportunity absolutely nobody would willingly become deaf or blind, and that concerns them because "the deaf community is going to wither to nothing". Good. Nobody should be fucking deaf.
That's kind of the needed debate that needs to occur with Genetic Engineering in regards to human embryos and life in general but its not taken off like the discussion of GMOs back in the 70s.
Endangered species? What are they, animals? Fucking horrible idea.
Lets please not use an analogy like a viral infection to talk about down-syndrome there is a massive difference. Downsyndrome isn't some scorn on all of humanity like polio was.
Well it was hyperbole for the sake of making a point, but you get what i mean.
Good news for everybody except advocacy groups who need those people to exist.
Seriously. Working at museums fucking sucked sometimes because you'd see awesome, high-functioning special needs visitors being taken care of, and then see a few people not even able to do much than grunt and look at the ceiling. I just... it hurt.
I work a supermarket and the front end has high functioning autistic and people with DS. But I've also seen the kind that can't even walk and have to be strapped into chairs. Its painful to see.
So, are they gonna put the peolpe who thought this shit was a good ideal on the list too?
and its still a good idea to rid the world of it, just like Autism. It is not a net positive at all.
I can assure you that those 30% are definitely not due to misdiagnosis. Might be something else, but not misdiagnosis (or underdiagnosis for that matter).
