Was also the case with hairspray and methylated spirits. Drunks used to buy them en-masse and drink the liquid. It got so bad they had to internationally spike the products with some foul tasting additives to deter them.

Obviously with the dawn of really cheap cider etc - drinking methanol etc is a lot rarer than before.
