Feel bad for him, but he is just destined to make games with small lifespans. Doesn't mean I will forget the great memories I had playing Jazz2 and UT/UT2004. I'd say suck it up sunshine.
The problem was that nobody cares about those kinds of arena shooters nowadays, and people prefer brand recognition over anything else. Publicity only goes so far, and lawbreakers was eclipsed completely by everything else. He isn't anywhere as bad as many of the devs that put out games in the last few months imo.
Why doesn't he just make an actually creative game instead of what ever the newest trend is?
Cliffy B strikes me as a man who became arrogant in his success. He led projects like Unreal, UT, and Gears, which mostly caught on because of the trend of games at the time and the cutting edge tech behind them. He just hit one success after another, so part of me thinks that combined with his almost self admitted rockstar attitude probably led to him believing that everything he had his hand in was gold and would become gold. After he left Epic though, it became very clear that his ideas weren't gold. The market changed, tastes changed, and his once lauded ideas were now history. His constant success I feel didn't really prepare him to fail, which is why he resorted to blaming others for his failures instead of just owning up to them and potentially improving. Also, let's be real. He used to also be a lead on Fortnite in its early days, but left after Tencent bought stock in Epic Games. He also didn't see the game going anywhere at the time, so he's probably shooting himself in the foot every day now and is probably bitter about Epic succeeding without him. Explains why he got upset over Epic "poaching" people from Boss Key, when in reality they were just leaving a sinking ship.
if the studio really went under, I dont blame them for not granting refunds. That being said, he's fucking malicious and lies everywhere and should probably be sued by his employees and customers

Reminds me of how John Romero went from the praised mastermind behind Doom and Quake, to Ion Storm and their shitfest Daikatana and whatever he's doing now while id Software went to do their own things and found their own success Its just that Cliffy wont keep his mouth shut on public
cult of personality around game designers is always weird and dysfunctional, for both the celebrity designer and his fanboys. They're never as singularly brilliant as they're made out to be, and whats worse is they actually start to believe the bullshit so its even more of an ego crushing blow when their projects suck ass or crash and burn. John Romero was that guy for us in the 90s, as well as Ken Silverman (build engine) who was actually a huge sperg and obnoxiously difficult to work with in a professional capacity according to behind the scenes stuff from that era (the leaked emails from Blood source dump are both hilarious and interesting.) I didn't want to be too blunt because i really dont have any reason to disparage him or be hateful, but Cliffy B is not and never was brilliant. Gears of War are not impressive games at all from a design perspective (largely recycling features other games had done before it), they are popamole (see image for summary) mediocrities from a particularly pernicious era of "cinematic" mediocrity in video games as we saw consoles take over as well as marketing departments becoming the most important and powerful sublets of productions. https://rpgcodex.net/forums/smiles/popamoledex.png His other claim to fame are being part of Unreal....ok. He, like Romero, comes from an era where it was highly unusual for a game dev to draw attention to themselves, but thats what they did, keeping their name and face in the growing media support network around the games industry.
Ha, good riddance.
Great, I hope he means it this time. Or at least move to a more publisher/producer role after a year or two of learning. He has good ideas which could be injected into other teams to be made into something good, and he loves what he works on. But as a whole package yikes
Exactly, he always comes off as overly cocky when he's promoting his new games, making claims that rival "Romero's about to make you his bitch", then when the end product ultimately falls short of the expectations, he turns into a sore loser, blaming the entire gaming community for fucking things up for him. He really could use a lesson in humble.
"You wont refund players!" Uh. What obligation does he have to do it? I know Lawbreakers was a flop (which from my eyes is a shame - I think it actually looked decent) but with his company in the dirt he's not under any obligation. Bit of a shame, I actually liked Cliffy. But I suppose retirement has to come sooner or later
Part of me is also starting to think he did this reaction on purpose. He knows people keep up with him, so maybe he reacted that way to make himself appear more relevant and to get responses akin to "no plz daddy don't leave" in order to prop up his ego. Instead, it backfired, and he's mostly getting responses akin to "lmao good riddance."
Honestly I feel nothing about the failure of Lawbreakers. The marketing was overly boisterous and hubristic and when they fell on their own sword it was like watching someone take a bunch of blocks to the face after spending 20 minutes poking at a Jenga tower. You knew it was going to happen, and they did too, so there's no laughter nor tears to be shed.
His first big game release was Jazz Jackrabbit, the best 90s mascot that everyone forgot.
He should had done a game not based on trends. easy to say These days (and to some degree back then) innovative games from other developers and not big names were anything but good sellers. "Good game sell itself and don't need exposure and marketing or hype" yeah nope. Cliff did something that most videogames do - parrots bestseller and catch the biggest hits. Like people doing Doom/Quake clones for example. Actually - his big hit Gears of War was inspired by not-so-great seller .kill switch on PS2. He did his part and polished the concept, made gameplay fluid and got big buck out of it. Something that he's unable to repeat these days. Guess that's one of these moments when you're too old and lost your skill in the meantime.
Slight Devil's Advocate, but... DON'T BE AN EARLY ADOPTER Unless the game is a sure hit because of whatever reason with 100% probability, like CoD or Battlefield, don't buy a game on day 1 based on a new IP which needs a playerbase to actually be worth any value whatsoever. It's part of what makes early multiplayer releases absolute TRASH to me. I gave in this year and bought BO4, also because of its BR mode, but I'm damn sure I'm gonna regret it later down the line. PUBG might suck a fair bit, but at the very least it won't be substituted later, and its slowly getting fixed. Not fast enough though. Same goes for CSGO. Yeah its looking dated compared to other flashy months old FPS games, but at least it has literaly everything I could want in a game nowadays: a fair learning curve, a very long lifespan, and a good enough competitive scene, which despite not perfect, is way more than most games could ever talk about. Yeah Fortnite for example also has a competitive scene, and so does Overwatch, but those were forced like fuck. They were made with that intention, and they don't mesh in well, unlike CS that was created as a simple mod, and people loved it, and it became a very competitive thing.
Honestly though, he was insane to think this game would be a great success in such a saturated market, and even then he wasnt selling the idea of his game very well. Where was the marketing? Such a waste if talent and time, and now he acts like a self righteous fuckwit, people who bought the game and cant play it have a right to be annoyed, because its not their fault it was a colossal failure.
That just drives my point further..ain't Unreal and UT still played today? Game makers really need to learn that people are gonna give them shit, but that doesn't give them a reason to be shit and act over dramatic. People might not think it, but video games are an important part of our world. Not to get on the RD2 bandwagon, but imagine that world in a perfect VR, not like we got right now, but I mean like 100% submerged into a different world. Things like that are gonna be possible (maybe) one day, because of video games. If these dudes keep going "oh then i won't make another game" then they are halting progress of technology. I believe games have potential for great things in their own way. Games devs should think before they speak.
i think you may have misunderstood my point, i wasn't trying to excuse his behavior at all - cliffyB is a reactionary type of dude who flings shit just as easily as the kids who send him dumb tweets on twitter, but he is someone also heavily averse to criticism in the first place. the failures of RH and lawbreakers are entirely his own fault, and additionally down to bad marketing and trying to enter already over-saturated markets - ergo, he lacks the foresight and/or the right people to warn him ahead of time what may or may not be a good idea. compound that with hateful twitter users, and you have cliffyB throwing a fit and exaggerating to suit his own purposes, hence why i suggest him deleting his twitter account since he clearly can't handle being connected, and it resulted in him claiming (once again) that he's out of games. in that context, i can understand why he would """throw in the towel"""
A lot of these video game developer personalities are overrated In the case of Cliffy, his former studio has found massive success after he left
yeah fair enough, did a bit of misinterpretation then.
So Cliffy B and Gabe Newell are both giving up on games, can we please gave either Todd Howard or Randy Pitchford next?
