https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNZSXnrbs_k I literally just used this quote in a conversation. what an influential show, rip
When I was like 10 years old certain kids in school would call me 'weird' all the time, I actually don't remember why exactly, I think I had a kind of lolrandom sense of humour and I wasn't into sports and stuff. I didn't really consider it bullying but it was pretty annoying and I would always tell them no I'm not weird shut up One day I saw an episode of this show where SpongeBob talks about how it's important to be able to laugh at yourself and not to take yourself too seriously. I don't know what episode it was but there's a moment where he holds up a mirror and literally laughs at himself. The nice thing about SpongeBob was that as a kid it felt rebellious and not preachy at all, but actually it did contain some cool messages for kids, it just did them in a non-patronising way. The next day in school someone called me weird and I said yeah maybe I am haha who cares? And that was the end of it. Thanks Stephen Hillenburg.
I was just in time to grow up with Spongebob as a new show and enjoy it in its prime. It was also instrumental in keeping my mom's spirits up as she fought her own battle with MS. Celeb deaths usually don't get to me but this deflates the soul. Thank you Stephen Hillenburg, for everything.

That made me far more emotional than I expected to be when I clicked on this thread. Beautiful song. RIP you talented bastard. Spongebob was one of my favorite shows growing up, I hope his legacy lives on for many generations.

Someone on Wikipedia had changed his wiki page to nothing but a single image of goatse today when I went to read up on him...bad taste.
I remember the announcements leading up to the show on Nick, and I remember being excited and sitting down to watch the premier of the new show. 7 year old me was instantly addicted, my girlfriend and I still quote the show to each other all the time. Death is always sad but it's especially hard to lose someone of such value for so many. But if you are in the minds of millions of various ages, even across countries then you did something right.

I remember begging my grandmother to get me this SpongeBob plush toy that spoke whenever you hit it that Kool Aid was giving out for some promotion, and I decided to dig it out of my closet today. It's all faded now, but surprisingly it still makes sounds even though it's been almost 20 years now https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/113132/ce9a2300-9f74-4f18-9c23-a183f2f87053/IMG_1523.jpg Like a lot of people here, SpongeBob contributed a lot to my childhood. I was only like 4 when it premiered, but I fell in love with it all the same. I remember talking with my friends back in elementary school about how excited we were for the next episode, going home to watch it, and then coming back the next day to quote it nonstop. It was a huge influence on me growing up, and it pretty much single handedly shaped my sense of humor. I've pretty much memorized every episode from the first 3 seasons as well as the first movie itself, which is a testament to Stephen Hillenburg's creative genius, as well as the talented team of people he worked with. I decided to rewatch Help Wanted (the pilot episode) today in his honor, and still found myself laughing even though I've seen it countless times before. Rest in peace, Mr. Hillenburg.
There's a very small elite group of cartoons, nay, shows, that have the cultural impact Spongebob does. How many shows out there in the world could children watching near two fucking decades ago continue to recite and enjoy jokes as full adults? How many shows have humor that aged so well that the show actually got funnier with time? How many fucking shows have such a timeless, ageless, and overall universal appeal that no one can say "yeah this isn't for me." Spongebob will go down in history as one of the best (at least for 3 seasons + movie) and most successful shows of all time, all because some cool af Marine Biologist wanted to educate some kids.
