Epic announces the Epic Games Store, a more developer friendly Steam

Honestly, at most it'll just be another client that people get games from, like GOG or humble bundle
Remember that games that launch on steam that are also on consoles all have different profit margins they get from various companies, and have different costs related to updating based on the system
Epic has a ton of work ahead of them if they want to see their client take off
Two games, Satisfactory and Ashens have been pulled from Steam and are now Epic exclusive.
Jesus. That's fucking bullshit. Like, Steam basically does it automatically. If Epic wants to do things differently they should at least do it right.

This is fucking exactly why I hate it when people go "b-b-but competition!" Now you have steam/epic fighting over fucking exclusivity with games and fucking over the consumers. Want to play your upcoming game on steam because you rather know if the game is shit or not via reviews? Too bad, Epic paid them 50k and now they have a 12 month exclusivity deal.
Yeah this isn't actual competetion.
Actual competetion would mean I could have the choice of getting the game on one platform or another. GOG is frankly the only real competetion that Steam has, and even then they trend towards older games - but I have gotten some newer releases on there.
Real competetion would be like two different grocery stores - they largely carry the same stuff, and you have an actual choice of which store to go to and you will be able to get the same products. You don't have that luxury here.
Epic Store is to be hand curated, afaik. That means they decide what goes in, like most stores out there.
This was exactly my concern. This is actively anti-competitive and anti-consumer. Like what the fuck are those refunds?
God damn, Valve has been kinda angering me lately with stuff like Artifact and their tone-deaf Portal easteregg in CSGO Danger Zone and wanted to start using a digital game store other than Steam.
But this, this is worse. At least Valve does refunds, at least valve allows you to review their games, at least there is a PUBLIC forum that is easily seen about a game on their platform.
Discord TOS changes I don't like. GOG is great but mostly has older games and nothing really that new. GMG just sells keys.
Origin, UPlay, Battle.Net, Bethesda Net, etc. are just for their own games I don't like it for the same reason I don't like what Epic is doing their store right now.
Everyone seems shit (except GOG, so far) and Valve is the least shit.
Honestly I don't think people give Steam enough credit.
It's an extremely good platform.
The lack of reviews and forum was specifically at the request of devs who don't want feedback to affect sales. Absolutely stupid. Review bombing sucks, but removing important info from the consumer isn't the solution.
Steam reviews are helpful.
Even metacritic reviews ARE helpful.
How do you make them work?
You try to filter out the good ones from the bad ones.
And those two from the "I don't like X because its poopy head!"
Yeah I retract my earlier statement in this thread. In fact, this shitshow makes me appreciate Steam even more.
Frankly, I think I'm going to boycott any developer who is going to do exclusivity with Epic. Epic Store's policies are anti-consumer, and I will not support any developer that supports said policies.
What the fuck? I double checked because it hadn't really clicked in that article above but it really is a full year of exclusivity. Like a month would be bad still but shit, that's about normal for typical platform timed exclusivity, with the high end being six months. This is just market bullying and strong arming. I mean yeah I guess it could be total fucking exclusivity but at a certain point you are splitting hairs.
I'm not even going to have to worry about anything like boycotting, Epic aren't supporting my platform (Linux) at the moment, so I'm not even able to use their store or play any games on there even if I wanted to.
Valve on the other hand though, with Steam Play and all that, most definitely deserving of another few game purchases.
Why bother? That place is made for Unreal Developers, nothing more. Just look at their FAQ, that place isn't made to attract players, it is made for companies to RETAIN customers.
EPIC STORE IS NOT A MARKETPLACE FOR GAMES. IT IS A FACILITY TO HERD CONSUMERS AT MINIMUM OPERATING COST.
No wonder they are doing exclusives and freebies, that sorry excuse for a barren un-informational storefront can't possibly compete with Steam.
I cannot believe this pile of garbage. Please send in the next competitor pronto.
tbh if I were releasing a small indie game I'd put it on GOG because it seems super easy. No DRM, just upload an installer or an exe or something.
tbh I might get Journey off their platform and not bother with anything else.
it's not clear if it will eventually come to other services anyway
12 months exclusivity? oh boy now I get to wait a year for the pc version of a game then wait another year for it to come on steam.
piracy will appear even more attractive to consumers, if publishers continue to push for their own little corner in the game distribution market.
who wants 5, 10, hell, 20 pieces of software for each and every fucking publisher choosing to pull their products off of every other platform, its absurd
Jayce put out a video that it goes back a few months, their QA video should be out already or really soon, was filmed a number of hours ago
Realease your game exclusively on the Epic Store because "steam takes too much". Make no sale because the Epic Store is anti-consumer as fuck and most people are heavily ingrained into steam's infrastructure.

With how PS3 emulation is coming, by the time Journey comes to other digital storefronts, i could just dump my own copy of Journey, along with Flow and Flower, and be playing it incredibly smoothly.
If you want me to spend money on your port of a game, maybe don't go down the route that completely fucks me over.
