Epic Games confirms Unreal Tournament is no longer actively developed

I really hesitate to give Fortnite that title, since its development is high-cost and high-effort, and it's not a bad game by any means.
If we're talking about ratio of profit to effort, the biggest cash cow in gaming history might be something along the lines of Candy Crush or Farmville, or maybe even Flappy Bird despite its incredibly short window of availability.
I remember one of the classes just getting a lightning gun as an ability. Instagib op
You're probably right about mobile games but honestly my brain doesn't even think of them as games so they didnt come up when considering it. The issue though, if mobile money vacuums are considered games, does pull the lever metal gear pachinko also count as a game? Food for thought.
I really avoid the question of how to explicitly define what a "game" is because I'm not sue how to define it in a way that's not totally arbitrary. I've already come up with equally good reasons why you could consider pachinko or a slot machine a game, and why you would consider it a non-game. I can't decide which to go with.
As much as I wanted it to become something, I kinda knew it was inevitable. Arena shooters just aren't as hot as they used to be, it's all about Battle Royales and "Hero Shooters" now.
Not to mention it being a collaborative development with the community (meaning not dedicating more developer resources towards it), while a good idea on theory, usually doesn't tend to go much of anywhere in execution.
Still, what I did play of it was a blast. At that point, the game basically felt like UT '99 HD, which I would've loved.
And I'll give credit to Epic. When it's apparent they are going to be dropping a game, they make it known, and even in cases like Paragon, make it up to those who supported it.
On a related note, is the netcode in QC still fucked?
This news is more than a year old if you were involved with the development of the game.
the initial save the world mode or BR?
June 2017.
Gimmie a BR game where I can cross one end of the map to the other in mere seconds just by gaining insane amounts of speed from bunny hopping.
Well this is a sour thing to wake up in the morning. But everyone who followed UT4 pretty much knew about this.
Oh well, at least they confirmed it's not being developed anymore, unlike other certain company.
I just wish that maybe after a short period of time in the future they decide to do Unreal 3 or a reboot. I just want to relive the magic of Na Pali again.
the worst part about the development stopping when it did is that it happened right when development started picking up super hard, with new animations, models, maps, sounds, and even the beginnings of a PVE mode with a few of its own unique maps being added. shit sucks
It's for the best. NewUT was going downhill fast. Graphically it was very nice sure but gameplay wise they tried to hybridize far too many generations making it feel not like UT at all. Felt more like Quake Arena, which isn't terrible but when you want UT you should get UT.
I mean, Planetside 2 really isn't dead. I know new weapons/continents (and updates in general) are fairly far between, but it's still got a pretty active community. You can easily find several big fights
pretty much every night (at least in Europe).
BR was released in September, so back then it was just StW
Did the new UT even do good before Fortnite got big?
I only ever heard about it in relation to new UE tech, never much about the game itself.
Idk if I would give Fortnite all the credit that it killed UT development, maybe just the final nail.
You are right; it was flagging for some time before, but in large part from Epic's neglect in my opinion.
Yeah UT was never open source, the source code is available, but that's it.
They should just go ahead and make it open source at this point.
They aren't doing well cause all the arena shooters coming out are trying to pull a stupid gimmick or have no aesthetic vision going for them. Quake Champions have that dumb hero thing with abilities and iirc so did Lawbreakers and the latter just looked terribly generic. Doesn't help that either game didn't have proper mod support, something that arena shooters lived and died by. Modsupport don't even kill monetization either since both TF2 and CS:GO have full mod support with dedicated, custom servers yet still makes tons of cash from hats and stuff. Just make a proper arena shooter, no gimmicks, with proper mod support.
Here's to hoping a few modders can hopefully develop something.
Reflex Arena has a lot of good support. Custom maps and server gamemodes. Had a lot of fun playing it, but,
No Players.
Made by one of the guys who made CPMA, and I have also met some of the developers.
Game has no gimmicks, and faces the same issues
I want a game that plays like UT99, there’s really just nothing that raw on the market that I’ve found and even UT4 wasn’t going to compare to it.
Can't really blame epic for this. I've made 100$ just from selling Double Helix Set code from Nintendo Switch bundle. Just imagine how much money they are getting from it.
Great job, Epic Games, where games are epicness
IMO Reflex Arena does too little to differentiate itself from older games. I can play Quake 3, and then play Unreal Tournament and get the feeling of two totally different games with significantly different design philosophies. When I played Reflex, I couldn't shake the feeling of "Quake 3 but not nearly as good", which is a problem many in the genre have.
It seemed to be pushing entirely towards the competitive scene niche, and had no bots for years, meaning once the playerbase dropped, there was basically nothing that could be done to alleviate it, both of which turned me off of playing it 'till a friend forced me to. Now that the bots are in, they seem a little bit retarded, which frankly makes me pretty glad I didn't buy it.
The design also has the same blandness that every post 2006 arena shooter seems to deeply suffer from. The sound and graphical (particularly with maps) design in UT and Quake 3 were a major force in making the game feel satisfying. Without it, everything tends to feel like you're shooting cardboard cutouts with pixie farts in the middle of a fast food container. I noticed this feeling with Warsow, Xonotic and Red Eclipse worse than I did with Reflex (the shotgun sounds great, especially), but there is something about the design which just feels completely unsatisfying to me, especially the weapons.
All of these aspects totally turned me and almost all of my friends off of the game, and who knows who else. All I want is something that feels less like it wants to recreate Quake 3 or UT but with little of the appeal, and something that feels more like its own unique take on the formula. I liked Cube 2 for this reason, even though it has a lot of the flaws I just wrote of.
Ever since I first saw this images I've had a question (okay, multiple, but let's not go there) - why does it say "parp"? Is that like a Fortnite thing?
Where's my tribes battle royale
parp is a fart noise
*prrrrp*
