Teacher refused to use trans student's pronouns, school fires him.

A better society where you can't hide behind your beliefs to be a dick to children or minors? I would think that would be great. Also you still have ignored the fact that it wasn't the slip up that was the issue, it was him denying to treat the student with respect under religious grounds.
and you're unable to accept reality
free speech isn't under attack because a man was fired for being unprofessional
"I wanna be a dick"
"No don't do that"
"I wanna be a dick, but just marginally less so"
"That's still not good"
"You refuse to compromise, this is why society sucks!"
He still has his full right of free speech, and it was never oppressed. He's not facing any legal consequence of it, but a moral/social one. The school has no obligation to keep his transphobic ass around, rather, an obligation to protect students from his intolerance. And they followed through on that part.
I've never known anyone transgender to take offense at mistaken, unknowing or accidental use of improper gender pronouns. Even if it isn't the first time.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, it's almost always certainly not well-meaning.
"My values are the ultimate judgement" ??
Most people seem extremely accepting and understanding these days, especially younger people. If you think about it, it's the people who have refused to adapt to these simple courtesy that are demanding safe spaces and being unable to cope with the real world, even so far as losing their jobs due to their un-socially-acceptable behaviour.
These people need to adapt quickly because the "common sense" arguement they enjoy falling back on to dig their heels in with is rapidly flipping other way. Not respecting pronouns will essentially start to mark you out as old and out of touch and less empathetic compared to younger generations.
Yep, misgendering happens. Hell, I do it from time to time to people who aren't trans, which if anything is probably even more offensive
What compromise here? Either he's calling him "her", or calling him "him". There isn't a compromise to be had here.
"What's she doing?"
"It's him, actually."
"Ok. What's he doing?
What's that complex about it? And if you make a mistake, no one is going to fly off the handle anymore than if you mess up someone's name.
Is this dehumanizing? He didn't call him "it"
let's send racist teachers to black schools to prepare them for the real world
the school cop randomly beats students up from time to time, too
Because he refused to just call him the right pronoun because its not worth the effort. Thats pretty dehumanizing.
It's not about being worth the effort, it's about the teacher having confused ideas about gender. It's a kind of foreign concept to most people. I'm not excusing what he said, but gender identity is a new topic for most people. He's not saying that trans people aren't human, he's simply saying that a trans person is just a woman pretending to be a man or vice versa. He literally doesn't believe they exist in the sense that more liberal parts of society say they do.
????
This is like compromising to continue considering a black student as 3/5 of a person as long as you pussyfoot around ever directly mentioning it in public. It's completely disingenuous and it has no place in our modern society.
You're either dumb or willfully ignorant. Both are forms of discrimination, and on equal ground nowadays. Pull your head out of your ass and think before you post.
it is called a metaphor
Hence he doesn't recognize them as a equal person and rather stick to his idea instead of not being a cunt. If someone asked him to call them a nickname, hed most likely have no issue. But when someone asks him to just flip pronouns, suddenly he just absolutely can't. Its common decency to just treat the person how they asked to be treated. But since said person is something he doesnt believe exsists, he rather ignore them entirely and hide behind religion to be a bigot to them.
I honestly can't tell if you're joking anymore
Brain wash? My boy, transgenderism has been a thing inmost societies just like gays and lesbians. Its only a recent change in human history that it became the "new".
It's Chryseus. He's been transphobic forever and is impossible to argue with on the subject. You're all wasting your time with him, probably with ragekipz too since he's voiced stupid opinions like this in the past himself.
"i want to be able to torment kids without repercussions and if they want an end to it theyre just whiners looking for a safe space, welcome to reality kid"
i can't believe drax the destroyer posts on facepunch
Oh, it's almost like not learning common courtesies is a big sign of sticking it to the man
Society changes with time, and that includes learning to be more polite to each other, get over it
Conservatism must be a degenerative disease then
Grandpa, who let you post on the internet?
This here is just bollocks
Yeah, it's messed up to do that, but I don't think he's doing it because he sees him as less than human, but because he doesn't understand the concept of gender identity. It redefines the concept of gender to him, which is a concept I'm sure he's been very comfortable with for a long time. It redefines who he is if gender isn't a static factor predestined at birth
hey are you just gonna ignore how hard you missed the point of the metaphor, which is what the post you're responding to is entirely about? how intellectually dishonest, why do you expect us to respect your argument when you can't respect the ones we make?
This goes beyond understanding gender concepts, this is treating others how they want to be treated. If a person came up to me and asked me to call them catmonkey the 5th, I'd still call them that just because its basic decency. This dude couldn't be assed to do it, therefore is treating them less than the average person.
I had a trans friend in highschool and when he told us he wanted to be called "him" now, it was really weird rolling off the tongue. It was a weird concept to me, and it felt like I was only saying it because I had to, not because I legitimately believed he was a man. Like I was humoring some kind of role play he was doing and not something serious. I had never thought of gender as an abstract concept like that, and while I get that now, I still have trouble with any pronoun that's not he/she. I'm not convinced about "non-binary" people and if someone tells me their preferred pronoun is "they", "xhe", etc., I'm simply going to avoid talking to or about that person.
Your metaphor was already wrong. You're implying that the guy is transphobic when he in fact made a mistake and offered to not call him by the female pronoun anymore and treat him by his name.
No, he offered to call him by his name. He just said he wasn't going to use the male or female pronoun.
Even if you are raised as catholic you are always teached to respect, love and help the other, not using it as excuse.
Good on the school for seeing past this bullshit and firing him.
Vlaming said he loves and respects all his students
Then if you are so sticked to your "Christian faith" then you should repent for your sins if the above is true. God, I hate so much xenophobes and LGBT-phobes using the "but is my faith" None of the holy books tells you to be an asshole to the other ( and where it says it is just old interpretations ).
