Strasbourg shooting: One dead, six wounded and gunman at large

I share the fear. As a gay male, my view of religion in general is pretty fucking low, but Islam tends to be at the top of Shit Mountain™. Regardless of how many times people say "bUt nOt All ThEiStS", I think I have the right to distance myself from religion because of the casual "I'm allowed to disrespect you because the law protects religious freedom" shit that still exists, and then the much more extremist approaches in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. To think that I would be considered 'Islamophobic' for rightful criticism is a scary prospect, because it's easy to misconstrue that criticism into "b-but hate speech!".
I mean no disrespect to the victims of this shooting and I'm obviously not trying to shift the attention to "yo let's hate muslims amirite guys", but I'm also not too eager to give religion a permanent stack of get-out-of-jail-free cards because of how it is easy to present criticism as hate speech etc.
It's the US that does not label terrorist attacks like this as terrorist attacks, not France.
Criticising Islam in a vacuum is one thing, using events like this as a springboard to snark about it being a religion of peace in a manner that's p much solely used to demean Muslims is another. I'd personally say the context justifies it in this instance.
The context of his general post history contributes to the ban.
You don't need to be afraid of criticizing Islam. Just stay away from the tasteless zingers when it comes to people being shot.
What's the best way of putting this without sounding bad.
Why are these institutions not directly trying to nip the problem in the bud with youths whom are radicalized. This seems to a trend among any nation where someone regardless of creed or background has been polarized by something, shows signs of wanting to commit some form of act of defiance against it. But there's complete inaction, almost always we've known these people have been on watch lists, and in the case of Europe, there's a trend of young men who are Muslim wanting to do some big acts like this.
I'm honestly not even surprised that this happen to be a man whose of Middle Eastern descent or a Muslim. You can say that's racists or Islamophobic but you cannot legitimately deny that there is an actual issue with Islam and Radicalization. I've doubt many of you have watched the propaganda videos that ISIS used to put out so often, or the various Rebel cells push too. There's one thing that binds a lot of those people together, in a form of brotherhood is that they might come from England,Tunisia, or even Russia. But they're brought together by their religion and dedication to fight. Many Syrian rebel groups use this as a means to try and recruit people whom are of course, Islamic to join their cause, it only makes sense. From their perspective imagine going off to fight for a "glorious cause." against the enemies of Islam. Seriously it doesn't take long for ideas like this, especially with video evidence and compounded by the fact you have so many former fighters coming home and NOT getting targeted.
I don't know if any of you have ever watched propaganda videos produced by militant groups in Syria, but I can tell you that it paints a really fucking enticing picture for someone who is a Muslim and see's that their life is going nowhere. Almost all these things show what it's like to be in some for of brotherhood forged in battle, the glory and vindication for killing in the name of God and in the prospect of eternal salvation for enacting God's will.
But almost always, these are people who are watch lists, almost always these are people who have recorded behavior that is radical, this isn't unique to Europe or anywhere. In the US we could've honestly prevented several mass shootings if the authorities were actually proactive instead of reactive in most cases. We know several people like this who have FBI records but they're just on a list to be observed and not acted on.

He has 27 convictions for crimes including robbery spanning France, Germany and Switzerland, and has spent considerable time in prison as a
result. Police were seeking him on Tuesday morning in connection with another case, but did not find him at home. Mr Nuñez said his crimes had never before been terrorism-related. But, he
added, it was during one period in prison that he was indentified as having become radicalised. "The fact he was a 'fiche S' did not pre-judge his level of dangerousness," Mr Nuñez told France Inter.
I know there are like 20 thousand people on the Fiché S list, but with 27 convictions and known radicalization he should have been in a separate, even more serious category.
Is it really that hard to separate an anti-nuclear protester or someone who looked at jihadist sites once or twice from people like him with violent past and having clear evidence for radicalization?
the problem is though, you can use both labels to define the incident, mass shooting tends to be wholly used by americans for incidents on american soil because of the frequency with which they occur there.
I think the difference between mass shooting and terror attack is largely cultural. Europe doesn't really have a history of mass shootings that weren't also terrorist attacks, while the exact opposite is true for the US.
Why is it always in France?
From what I've read (correct me if I'm wrong French FPers), France has a not-small population of young Muslims who live on the fringes of society and have trouble integrating, which sets them up to be excellent targets of radicalization.
Because they let anyone in, thats why. thats why the same thing happens in Germany, UK and Sweden too. Do background checks. life time in prison for anyone that is radicalised, and deportation for
those that have a long criminal record or this will continue to happen over and over again.
He was born in Strasbourg, so this isn't even related to immigration.
Alright, but it was still confirmed that he was radicalised and had 27 prior convictions, this scum of earth should've NEVER seen the light of day.
Being on a watchlist is not a crime and involves no due process.
What would you prefer they have done?
not saying you should deport ethnic minorities for committing crimes, only immigrants. and it depends on how severe the crime really is. And dont get it twisted, if i say immigrants it doesn't mean
muslims. It means anyone from any other country
The fuck does that have to do with the topic at hand? Or even with terrorist attacks in France in general?
I don't know why it seems like French prisons are a hotbed of radicalisation.
Like do something about it, I know segregation is not the most ideal in prison but what the hell you gonna do when it keeps making terrorists in prison
I wonder if it's for the same reason US Prisons are gang recruitment centers. Example:
White guy isn't really racist or evil, but gets pinched for armed robbery and is sent to a shithole prison because it was a violent crime. Inside shithole prison white guy is a minority, latino and black gangs look down on him, only other white guys are the Nazi skinhead gang. Fraternizing with latino or black gangs will not guarantee protection, but Neo-Nazis will. White guy joins Nazis for protection, spends 24/7 with Nazis, ends up fully indoctrinated. White guy gets out of jail and is now far worse than the shitty armed robber he was before he went in.
In the first place why are gangs even allowed to operate in prisons
Because people are sometimes allowed to socialize and talk to each other in prison, and that's the minimum requirements needed to start gang-activity. Anything actually active gangs do is not allowed, but sitting around and talking is, which is all that's needed to create a gang. What, you wanna put everyone in solitary?
It also tacitly implies that being afraid of militant extremists who want to kill you and erase your entire way of life is irrational. It isn't.
He probably has gotten asyl in Germany already. I can hear the social care money flowing into his three bank accounts.
And to add to the discussion about muslims and terrorists. A problem with the Islam is that it has never reformed because it's forbidden through the sacred words of the prophet to ever change anything. Christianity has changed. But there are so many passages in the Quran to harm and kill non-muslims and what not, I can't view the religion in any way positive. Not every muslim shares everything that is written there, nor is every single one a potential terrorist. But you should never lie to yourself that a good amount of these attacks/shootings are committed by them. UK also has a big problem with criminal muslims making up many prisoner numbers, just like in cities like Berlin, where the same applies.
Things like Ramadan are alright with me. "Drawing the sword when you see non-muslims" is not. The religion itself is stuck in the middle-age. But changing it will probably never happen.
All Abrahamic religions are disgusting, barbaric relics of an ancient time. You can find any number of horrible commands written in these holy texts.
Islam deserves hate and so does Christianity.
Christianity isn't stuck in the dark ages like islam. Christians are perhaps one of the most persecuted religions in the world next to judaism. I'm glad my comment triggered a debate, i'm so tired of the christian bashing and the islamic appeasement party that's been happening at facepunch. Islamic immigration on the scale the west has been receiving is sending us back into the dark-ages due to their views on everything from women's rights, equality and tolerance to homosexuality and culture/ethics.
God bless you all, have a nice day.
The guy's dead.

Christianity is used as justification for laws and policies in the United States. Laws and policies that inordinately harm and restrict people for no reason other than 'my religion says so'.
If your religion says it's not okay to have an uncontrollable attraction to the same sex, or that one sex must be silent and submissive to the other sex, or that we should rape and murder entire cities because they aren't part of our religion, it's stuck in the fucking dark ages.
Christians don't deserve violence or punishment simply for being Christians. But the harmful impact of their religion is impossible to ignore and demands criticism.
