A society that doesn't murder people over a personal choice, would, objectively, be better than a society that does. I realize that I'm just echoing his point, but I wanted to reword it to make the point clearer.
A society also shouldn't consider murdering a man over cannabis oil, which cannabis are one of the least harmful illegal substances and are even being harnessed for medicinal reasons in other countries as a legitimate pain reliever.
That's because, in the US at least, the war on drugs was started to oppress hippies and blacks. The drugs used by them, marijuana and psychedelics (mostly hippies for this one) were classified as the highest catagory; highly addictive with no medical benefits. Alcohol and tobacco on the other hand were specifically except by name because they were the traditional choice of conservatives and whites in general, including people who wrote the law. Had they not been except, they would also be the highest classification. Their exception alone is enough evidence that the entire War on Drugs is bullshit.
Ironic isn't it? These drugs will ruin your life! Because we're going to ruin it for having them
So when you, me or anyone makes a claim somewhere along the lines of "the persecution of drug users is wrong and shouldn't be allowed to happen" then it's not a personal opinion, but it's an objective, universal truth? Literally how? I get your point, and personally I wouldn't put very much resources into any anti-drug efforts if I were a leader or a lawmaker, but I still have a hard time buying the absolutely certainty of it. I think a more logical approach is where you may choose not to persecute drug users over their personal choice of drug, yet without certainty about the true value of not persecuting them for it, but you choose not to persecute them anyway because that's what you personally believe we should do.
People shouldn't be punished for things they do to themselves, addiction is a symptom of suffering. It's as stupid as fining/imprisoning people for attempted suicide.
