Amazon Echo records man's private life, Amazon sends it to stranger

google gonna listen to me touch myself all day, i'm sure they'll enjoy it
The NSA practices mass surveillance. They don't just magically filter out anyone who isn't a terrorist.
So when will we see open source home devices that doesn't record and/or sell you out?
I might be the contrarian but I'm OK with at least my Home Mini saving (I explicitly kept it enabled) what I request of it. If they want to use my requests to improve how it works, then that doesn't upset me. I primarily use it as voice control for stuff like lights, though, not really as an event bookkeeper or email thing or whatever.
It probably stores key words and other spoken information, to resell to ad agencies that keep track of the "profile" that is created through cookies, email addresses, and etc. associated with you.
It would just as easy be able to pick up sensitive information as well.
Google doesn't. I mean, of course they could (Which would be pretty dumb given why would they help competing ad agencies, and the fact they say that noone who isn't you can see the data), but there would be no benefit to anyone other than the home team to use the data.
There are truly scary companies that DO do this, but I don't believe that the particular dataset I provide to the home would be of any non beneficial use
I don't get why that whenever people talk about these sort of things spying on you it comes back to "ok but this other thing you use is always spying on you". Just because something you already use collects info on you doesn't mean you should just be using and supporting these type of things mindlessly just because "lol this other thing already does it, may as well give up!!". At that stage you're practically asking to be fucked in the ass even harder when you can avoid further fucking.
Plus things like smartphones are practically a necessity today so it's almost impossible to avoid unless you open it up and disable the appropriate things, while something like Google Home, it's search engine, Windows, etc aren't.

If it ends up being like this which seems quite likely, can we all please agree to start burning shit to the ground?
A few people mentioned anonymyzation of data in this thread, just so you know, anonymization is bullshit. It's trivial to de-anonymize most of the kind of data telemetry sends these days so the anonymization doesn't really exist to begin with. This should make sense because, obviously if you have all the information about a person and strip out the ID and name it's still easy to even automatically reconstruct the name and ID fromall other data about that person's life.
There was a time you could just yell at your phone with the Facebook or Instagram app open about something specific, like Pizza Rolls, or Paper Towels, and then suddenly you'd see advertisements about those things all over Facebook
I'll just hope some underground group starts targeting the datacenters that store everyones information, to somewhat "set them free" from the mass data collection.
That'd be a wicked movie plot, actually.
Does the name Edward Snowden mean nothing to you?

these devices are a godsend for disabled and elderly, but boy does it enable abuse towards them.
Facebook (and almost certainly Google) has database entries for people who have never used any of their services purely because they know people who do use those services. It might not have a name, but considering it's selling demographic information it really doesn't matter.
With the attitudes we have towards any form of organized resistance, not very likely.
