• Nintendo could move away from home console development, says company president

Might as well ask for Dad of Boy while you're at it.
I think another iteration of the switch with everything worked out like bump up the power, larger storage, increased availability of the large format carts for developers and publishers, add a second usbc port for external charging and have everything ready to go day one they could really make a play at it but then when do you release it because I'm not sure the xbox one, xbox one X, or PS Pro model works for the switch.
Yeah, as mentioned, I see this as less a "we're done with consoles after the Switch" and more a "we want some alternative consistent streams of revenue if home consoles ever die out or our next home console isn't as successful" It's a good plan, it's never good to have all your eggs in one basket, especially with consumers being as fickle as they are. Nintendo probably doesn't want to end up like Sony, where they only have one profitable stream of revenue (because everything else Sony branded is underperforming to hell) that can be of risk of being culled out (in Sony's case via their arrogance).
expand on the double dash mechanics. seems like a perfect oppurtunity with the joycons being able to split into two.
Kind of sad that dedicated handheld consoles are dieing. The Mobile game market is absolutely abysmal and, imo, phones are absolutely terrible to play games on.
Soon: Nintendo releases new games distribution platform for PC.
If Nintendo did port their games to PC, not only would they have their own launcher/store, but they'd still probably charge for online. You don't want Nintendo on PC.
I originally bought a Switch for my 6-month trip to the Middle East but it easily became one of my favorite things to play with regardless. I haven't bought a console since the 360 and I still don't plan to other than this one but the Switch just had this crazy charm to me. Zelda, Mario, Smash, and Mario Kart all on a system I can play in an airplane, on my bed, or at a party with a bunch other people? And it does all of those things well? Plus it has games that I care about but can't just get on a PC unlike 90% of Xbox or PS4 shoot em ups? Count me in.
For those who are fearful of this future: I'd argue that it's in both the consumer and Nintendo's best interest to move to mobile development. Mobile games don't have to be garbage - if the feature-set of the Switch was expanded just a little bit, it would essentially be a tablet. I assume here they're just hedging their bets that they will not be able to compete with phones and tablets in the future, in terms of technology and market share. So while for the short term most AAA mobile games may be shit, ease of connecting phones to larger screens, quality controllers, and the vast majority of non-profiteering, indie development will all make its way to the mobile market if I had to guess. We'll see of course, but if Nintendo outright said they're only focusing on mobile development from here on out it does not necessarily mean a strictly terrible fate for their games. Of course, if they pull the same shit with Mario Run or whatever then yeah they're fucked.
