There's a simple reason why your new smart TV was so affordable: It's collecting

I like my privacy and shouldn't have to go out of my way to get older and potentially worse hardware to keep it.
If you want to sell my data, I want a cut of it.
You have no grasp on the real costs of these machines to society.
According to Best Buy's website the cost is about $399, so I do have a grasp on the real costs for society.
You know that isn't what I meant.
You essentially do. In this case, your cut is the lower price, as it is with websites with the content being free.
If you buy from ANY reputable manufacturer, your data will be 100% anonymous (in the form of an advertiser ID, they really don't care who you are) If you still arent cool with that, you can leave it sitting on AUX 1 and pipe in media from any other device (i.e. a laptop), and they won't have access to anything. You could also use a firewall to block the data mining transmission from happening at all, there are many guides for that.
Same thing with Microsoft. You can't natively play DVD's on Windows 10 anymore without paying for a small license file on the store. Or just using your own software like VLC or something.
How many computers even have an optical drive to play it. Makes total sense to me.
Why the fuck are we buying smart anything? These devices are nothing more than massive backdoors and security issies for a novelty of not having to write 5 to 6 words down.
I would normally agree with you, but smart TVs can actually be pretty nice if essentially everything you watch is streamed media. I've used an apple TV for a while and they're actually really neat.
Anonymized data is a myth and you damn well know that some functions need online connection.
And I love how you first say how it's all anonymous, yet in your edit you advertise how it is all catered to your personal needs.
Quite the disparity there, maybe you should watch some CCC videos

Yes, but if you're so inclined, you can not use the smart part of the smart tv, a "feature" that effectively just makes then cheaper.
Anonymously linked to your advertiser ID. They can advertise to your device, but data that's sent out (read; sold) has absolutely no markers for your actual identity in it.
Also, I don't speak German, so even if I was inclined to watch the hour long video source you posted, I couldn't.
Okay but I don't want the lower price? I'd rather pay and not have my data siphoned off.
Not really, they get continuous income from it, we don't
There are translations to French and english.
Anonymously linked to my advertiser ID. Anonymously linked to my own ID. Are you for real?
A fucking list of the WiFi networks in range is enough to deanonymize any data coming from my TV.
Hell a simple correlation between Google searches for programming and IP logs is enough for that shit.
Please provide a source for your claims, otherwise pretty much everyone who has more knowledge about IT than my grandma is going to assue that you are talking out of your ass.
You could just ya know not connect it to the internet
And then you connect your XBOX or PC or some shit through HDMI and suddenly, Ooooops
I shouldn't fucking have to deal with that
It's literally just a 'Skip' button when you're going thru the setup process.
You don't even need to go that far. A simple look at who the ISP provider is and the kind of local channels you get in the States is more than enough to pinpoint someone. On top of that, Peachy is trying to argue that we should trust manufacturers and developers that they're anonymizing our data. If I can't trust the government, why the fuck am I trusting a corporation? If Facebook fails at keeping shit private and secure, why should I trust a corporation who most likely is using a SmartTV OS developed by some random company that would require far more digging than is any normal consumer would perform.
Let's just go back to CRTs. The heavier the better.
That's not going to go down well:

Are you advertising pi-hole?
Maybe my impression of Smart TVs is outdated, but aren’t they basically just TVs that are slower at doing actual TV things, but they also have a native YouTube/Netflix app that will stop working after two years, because manufacturers don’t want to keep supporting their shit?
Used to be the case, but modern smart TVs are just as powerful as smartphones, so laggy ones are kinda becoming a thing of the past. But yes, support is absolutely an issue, but if you don't use the smart functionality anyway, its not a big deal.
Its in the standard, expect it to be used.
I don't expect it to work like that, unless you HDMI devices allows it to (which to be fair, is a complete wildcard). But at that point, they will start advertising it as a "feature".
Yeah, but how many people do you think would understand the ramifications?
Claiming that TV actually get a network connection over HDMI ethernet from consoles (consoles don't even use these pins) is ridiculous. There's no merit to this claim. Consoles don't act as a switch or router because why would they.
What the FUCK
