When you have a platform like IRC, XMPP or Matrix, where it's just a protocol, and each server is run by it's own host, you can't blame the protocol for doing anything wrong, even if it's being used for shady shit. You are all using the same handful of applications, but every instance is entirely separated. Everyone has their different rules, and no one entity can control another.
Discord's big problem is that they control everything. Makes it easy to make a successful platform surely. But in these cases, it shows how fucked up it can get when it's surveillance team is misguided in the common ruleset, as this represent the standard that all 150-200+ million users must follow

Call me the root of the problem for saying this. But don't really see this as a reason to completely stop using Discord as a whole. I've helped build an entire community on there. And basically there is no way to get the community back together if we jump ship. Let alone any other better alternatives. What Discord provides it does it pretty damn well. But then again it's not like I really join any major discord servers. Just a few personal servers and the FP Nintendo discord
I don't think anyone in here really wants to drop Discord. They're just frustrated and want Discord to improve, to actually enforce their ToS. Anyone claiming that "it's time to drop Discord" and cites this whole nonsense and the whole Tencent investment as reasons to drop Discord is more then likely still using the service while saying that, and has no plans to leave it behind until a compelling alternative presents itself. I don't see there being an alternative that won't face these same issues though, especially if that alternative gives more power to its users (one of the main draws Discord has over something like Skype).
On a sidenote, I'm tired of people using Tencent investments as an argument as to why something is bad. Tencent has investments in pretty much EVERYTHING related to gaming. You might as well stop playing video games if you're that concerned about a potential Chinese boogeyman.

There's Sebastian Gorka, a Hungarian Nazi; Gavin McInnes of "proud boys" infamy; Gab which is twitter for people too toxic for twitter; Dana Loesch, a Texas Trumpublican; OneAngryGamer, an alt-right blog that funnily enough compared bans on child pornography to the Holocaust; Styxhexenhammer, an alt-right YouTuber; Chris Ray Gun, another alt-right YouTuber; James Allsup, yet another alt-right YouTuber this one was at the infamous Charlottesville rally.
By no means am I suggesting that the allegations against this Discord mod shouldn't be investigated, but this situation reeks of what happened to James Gunn, Discord is known for being one of the few social media platforms to stand up to internet Nazis, and it's clear that certain people are angry about that.

I actually think it's caused by something much worse than that. My brother invited me to a server he was made admin of, he's like 12 and proud to be admin of a server with thousands of people, and I ran like hell when I saw that there were roles for ages, and that there were channels for posting yourself lewd and that the roles for ages under 18 weren't blocked from seeing or commenting in it. I've also heard rumor of "dating servers". Kids are making servers for themselves to find online partners. Some predators may even be doing so under the guise of being a kid to cultivate a community of kids e-dating other kids.
I've been invited into servers where some loser made a server like that for people over 18, and used the admin to pressure and successfully get adult chicks to think higher of him so he could squeeze out a few nudes, I shudder to think how much easier a kid could be manipulated like that knowing that the method has worked en masse on people even over 25.

If it was fully open source and by "with its current set of features" you mean it has the same features as Discord, then yeah.
However, that's a fucking pipe dream at best (the app would have to pay for itself somehow outside of subscriptions), not to mention these same problems that are plaguing Discord now would also flourish on this platform as well if it were to become popular. Probably even moreso given the application being open source.
As for now, until that mystical open source alternative appears, I'll stick with Discord.

Getting people to move all the way from Skype to Discord is a long tedious process. It takes a good while. Meanwhile just fucking look at Facebook and Twitter, you would need objectively superior platforms just to get people to budge, security and privacy be damned.
