Student in racist yearbook photo: 'This is not a picture of life at U of R'

Look, I'm not gonna be so patronizing and condescending as to take offense on someone else's part. People should have control over their own life, actions and words. If you tell me you're not offended then that's how I'll take it.
But have you ever been bullied? Maybe by someone who wasn't even aware that it bothered you? Often in that position, you have two options: A) admit that the joke bothers you, take issue with it, and confront the person who did it or B) tell yourself it's fine, laugh along and take it as banter, move on. You go with A, and end up looking overly sensitive, confrontational, or like you don't know how to take a joke. You go with B, you don't sour the atmosphere, and it makes you feel like you belong. I won't say that's what's happening here, and if Michael Kizzie says it was in good fun, I'll believe him. But let's not throw out the concept of peer pressure entirely
Maybe you aren't aware, but cameras back then were very noticeable. And the picture was clearly taken with flash (look at the shadows that's being cast directly behind the people). He knew it was taken, he just didn't give a damn at the time because it was before everything you did was on the internet.
