Seconded, I also grew up in Hong Kong and the majority of kids spoke with an American accent including myself for a brief while (even after I moved back to the UK) despite having 2 British Parents. I tend to fall back on American words sometimes such as Garbage or Trash as opposed to Rubbish etc.
I was raised heavily around British comedy. I mean as like an 8 year old I watched Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill. I was watching Black Adder and Young Ones and Father Ted growing up. And of course tons of Month Python. Never picked up the accent but I got a shitload of the vocabulary. When you start quoting that shit by middle school teachers get very confused.
Affects non-English countries as well. I personally speak with generic american accent not only in English but also in my native tongue because I spend waaaaay to much time watching american tv as a kid.
1 The entire American youth populace starts talking in Cockney rhyming slang
2 America breaks down, tower of Babel style
Just as Jackie Chan
Translators note: Jackie Chan means plan
oh fuck the UK's backup plan for the 13 colonies is working oh shit
Yeah but too bad that kids here aren’t picking up British accents from Peppa Pig. All the little cunts are watching Ben 10 or Paw Patrol or whatever the fuck is the rubbish on TV and YouTube these days, and picking up American accents from them.
We need to get them on Brum next, that's the good shit.
I got nicknamed "British" in school because my accent sounded british, I've still got an incredibly distinct accent and people ask me if I've ever been abroad only to be looked at like an alien when I tell them I've never been :V Although to anyone else thats heard me who speaks english natively or in general can tell my accent's hardly british, and they can ez hear my inner Bulgarian.
When I'm in England people say I speak Scottish,in Scotland I sound English. Was born in England but love in Scotland and visit family sometimes down there, I can't win even here I think my accent must be very odd
this is actually entirely true. the modern southern american accent is a living example of what british northern aristocracy talked like when america was a young nation. southern hospitality as an american concept comes from the cultural values of the british elite, for example. this is also why the southern united states had such a thing for slavery at the time -- many of the northern aristocrats in britain were slaveowners and they moved to the united states when it was outlawed in the british empire. y'all, for instance, is a word of british origin.
I entirely blame Monty Python for my ability to voice a nature show as an old English Conservation Professor.
"southern British accent"
The number of aussies posting here on Facepunch has started to mess with me, now I always say "mate" instead of "dude". I say "cunt" way more often than "fuck" now as well.
I think posting on FP has slowly been making me lose Canadian spelling on things, because I notice myself dropping the Canadian 'u' from things more often than I ever did before.
You take that back.
