Shamima Begum: 'I didn't want to be IS poster girl'

I work with a 15 year-old. Last shift I worked with her she was considering lying about her age because a 23 year-old was flirting pretty heavily with her. She really didn't consider how creepy it was until I pointed out multiple times how creepy it was.
Another time she told me the story of how she "borrowed" the car of a friend's parent and crashed it into a wall causing it to burst into flames.
Another time she told me about how her friend (same age) got caught stealing from a high-end retailer because she took the items she stole out of her bag and put them on right in front of the store where a guard was standing.
My point is that 15 year-olds, aside from the occasional exception, are often very dumb and easily inclined to do stupid things. Often out of a desire to prove that they're more mature than they actually are.
yeah im pretty sure joining and supporting a terrorist organization is a crime lmao
if a 15 year old can get tried as an adult for murder, that shows that the legal system recognizes while some 15 year olds are fucking morons, other are more than well aware of their actions and consequences of it. considering she was able to get her own fucking way to syria, I imagine she was probably savvy enough to realize that the group beheading fucking aid activists and journos aren't exactly the good guys.
She just sounds like an idiot, nothing to do with her age.
Then nothing anybody can say will ever convince you that somebody at 15 cannot be considered fully responsible for their actions. They're either smart and should've known better, or they're idiots and should've known better.
Yeah, I can probably grab plenty of examples of 21 year olds doing similarly retarded shit, good look pulling the "I didn't know any better" crap then.
Guarantee she'll be just as dumb 3 years from now.
There's a difference between a mass shooting and joining a terrorist group that wants your country and culture permanently wiped off the map. If leaving her there is not an option, then they shall at least treat her like an enemy spy and have her sentenced for treason. But that would carry a considerable punishment, I'm not sure how the UK treats those people, but in the US they either go to military prison or to florence. Neither are fun places to spend the rest of your days.
that's kind of sad.
Minors still get charged as adults on plenty of occasions. It's not like you can murder someone as a 15 year old and go "oopsie I didn't realise it was bad".
difference between jon venebles and a housewife
No she's a woman who actively joined a terror organisation after having watched videos of them beheading people. Stop trying to play it down.
give real evidence of her crimes and i'll understand your anger but so far it's just meaningless. isis are sadistic, minor becomes radicalised, it's now her fault alone...
Joining a fucking terror organisation is a crime in and of itself. Fact is she'd be a risk to security here for literally no reason as someone who clearly still sympathises with the movement. I value the well being of British citizens more than the well being of someone who joined a terror organisation. I can sympathise with wanting to help the kid, but not with helping her.
If anything letting her keep her kid is more likely to result in radicalisation.
She wasn't fucking groomed, she watched a video of some sick fucks cutting people's head's off and said "I want in".
She now want to come home and the UK shouldn't help her with that - that's he punishment.
And her being 15 back then means nothing, there is a difference between complex moral decisions that a 15 year old isn't fully equipped to deal with and knowing that beheading people is bad.
I wouldn't go as far to defend her, but yes - she was.
There's a reason she was considered a significant victory for IS propaganda.
Not entirely sure how people are going through this much effort to defend a terrorist.
She watched videos and propaganda, she joined ISIS, and has a child because of that.
She openly values ISIS still, she openly justifies what they do, and openly is against british values.
The only reason she wants to come back to the UK is so she can raise her child outside of the battlefield. A battlefield which she would let her own child go to once he is old enough.
If she is going to come back to the UK she should come back as a prisoner for supporting ISIS. Her child should be put into some type of protective custody where it has a chance to live a life that doesn't involve indoctrination.
As a dual citizen I say fuck this person. Let them sleep in the bed they made. She is a fucking traitor. I don't care how old she was or currently is, 15-year old is enough to make rational decisions. People are only making this many excuses for her because she is a woman with child. If this had been a male ISIS fighter people would be screaming for the noose.
She provided support to ISIS, left the country to join ISIS, and openly holds ISIS ideals. She is a traitor and will only be used to radicalize more people in the country. If she wants to come back it will be in lock up and hopefully some place that can provide her with some type of counseling/support.
If we can rehabilitate pedophiles we can certainly rehabilitate terrorist. Terrorist are easier because most of their shit is taught behavior.
Personally though both can rot.
That's all around general stupidity and lack of critical thinking skills, not a lack of wisdom or life experience.
Where did you pull this out of? Pretty sure absolutely no one considers this anywhere in the realm of truth. 15 year olds are no way "mostly complete mentally".
Im not even talking about this girl here but thats just blatantly false.
"Lack of critical thinking" is a key part of all this. Life experience and critical thinking are often conflated, but "life experience" is driven by the ability to think critically about a situation and consider the ramifications of actions.
At 15 your brain physiology isn't remotely tuned to think critically about a lot of shit. That doesn't really set in until somewhere around your 20s. At 15 your brain is still developing the more complex skills and features adults take for granted when looking back at their teen years. Combine that with the hormonal bullshit going on in a pubescent body and you're given s recipe for bad decisions.
Cause and effect on the long term white literally does not exist for the average teenage brain. Until is developed more, it's better at dealing with "in the moment" things. Which is partly why it's wicked common to see teen girls getting groomed into becoming ISIS baby factories and not 20-somethings. They're just naturally more receptive targets due to the lack of complete brain development.
Was groomed as a teenager and it fucked me up well into my early twenties. Kids will do dumb shit.
ISIS deliberately targeted children and teens with promises of freedom, own house, flash cars and parties, lots of money and so on, and in the beginning they actually did so. Their social media influencers and recruiters were really good at convincing people to join and they will be causing trouble for long after ISIS is defeated.
She has every right to come back, I feel that the UK should provide her with a passport and only consider giving her a flight if she agrees to be investigated and deradicalised(sp?) and that she actively tries to get back into the British way of life.
We had a duty of care to prevent this kind of thing happening to a child and we failed.
I would like it more if she at least showed a.little remorse though, and when she is investigated hopefully she is prosecuted for supporting terrorism.
Again, she wasn't lured in by promises of riches or houses or cars. She herself admits, she got interested after watching videos of IS beheading people. There is a difference between someone pretending they are nice and only want to help you ect. and them openly being monsters.
not sure where I stand on this but it's always interesting to see people completely drop the idea of nuance and default to good vs bad in cases like this.
when we look at youth joining gangs or killing people it's a given to analyse the socioeconomic factors, their upbringing, potential mental state, whatever storm of factors may have intersected to lead the CHILD into doing what they did.
but now ISIS is involved shes mentally aware and just 'a nut'. simply a bad person and nothing more. not like me, I rolled the dice and landed on good person!
not how it works is it.
Sometimes when I was 15 I made stupid mistakes. Like going to bed too late or forgetting to brush my teeth. I would've NEVER even considered joining a terrorist organisation. We were told from a young age that they were horrible people. Maybe this is just how I was brought up but idk.
[Let’s Stop Acting Like We Didn’t Join A Terror Cell When We Were..]
Well done for you then? You aren't, and hopefully weren't, in the socioeconomic position she was in. Peoples actions should not be taken in a vacuum, they are a result of their environment and a myriad of other factors.
It's far too easy to just simplify these things so you don't have to think about the how and the why. Instead just giving yourself some "Other" that you can pin up as an example of everything wrong with X.
People don't radicalise because they think it will be fun. They radicalise due to a number of factors; poverty, isolation, manipulation. Honestly there's probably too many for me to realistically list.
Abandoning her out there isn't going to stop others from radicalising. We need to fix our society to remove the reasons people do in the first place. Instead bring her back, lock her up, get her kid some more competent care. Use her experience to help flesh out our radicalisation identifiers and actually try to stop this from happening in the future. Rather than just dealing with the fallout when they realise they got fucked over.
“Hey, let’s quit acting like we didn’t behead a few Syrian farmers in
our time,” said one commentator, showing pictures of his gap year spent
garroting lads in the Helmand province in Afghanistan.
Critics of Ms. Begum who claim they can’t relate to joining a terror
cell as a child have been asked to think about other crazy shit they may
have done, such as bleaching their hair or being a fan of Westlife.
Good, no sympathy for her. However, I think her children should at least be brought over at least.
We've revoked her citizenship, effectively leaving her stateless and her child was born outside the UK. We've washed our hands of both people, you can't pick and choose here. Both will either die or continue to operate as part of radical groups.
Good job everyone, mission accomplished.
sorry my phone wont let me delete accident quotation
i think this was more done as a message than anything else.
meanwhile someone who actively recruited like anjem choudhary is peacefully walking around even after causing the backlash.
also not sure why citizenship is revoked unless you are directly causing harm to your home country. and don't say she did because there is no evidence she ever even held a weapon.
and the argument that she indirectly caused harm is also pointless.
hitler's nurse wouldn't have been condemned.
