Hurry hurry hurry and get retroviral gene editing before i die
If this is a treatment given by the current healthcare system, neither you or I will be able to afford it in a hundred years.
I'd be more worried for our kids and grandkids.
There's literally no way this would be handed to anyone other than the rich elites.
The moment eternal life is discovered is the day that eternal tyranny is ensured.
Imagine a hundred more years of the boomers' control over politics, a thousand? an eternity?
luckily, they're not developing a crispr technique to stop a good ol' bullet to the brain
yet
Probably the case for US but not rest of the world
Born too late to colonize the new world, born too early to colonize the solar system, born just in time to live long enough to do so anyways.
It'll be available to everyone but most people will just have to slave away forever to keep paying for it.
Born just in time for furries and cat girls
Looking on the bright side of things!
I agree. It makes sense, and no reason to why it shouldn't be regulated as well. Want to be immortal? It'll cost ya! But just your luck, we also offer 'special loans' if you need one ;-)
And to add the cherry on top, if people do offer immortality for a cost, does that cost extend further than $$$? Like, let's look at the Elephant in the room ---> Disallowed to procreate until your loan is paid or disallowed for a specific number of years? I would agree to that price, but pretty sure not everyone will.
And I can honestly see the rich fucks taking advantage of this to prolong their own lives and fuck the poor even more than they are.
We're not ready for this.
On the shorter term, before this technology becomes cheap enough for near-global adoption, this is the dystopia science fiction has been warning us about for over forty years.
This isn't about stopping natural aging. Aging is theorised to happen due to degradation of dna and rna when it duplicates.
This is about stopping a genetic disease that occurs in both humans and mice called Progeria, it's designed to make the Progerin and Lamin A that the cells produce during division non-harmful and focus production of Lamin C.
It will not lead to eternal-life style anti-aging treatments but rather new avenues to attack other genetic degenerative diseases.
You know, I doubt aging will ever be stopped. But if we could hold on to good health for a little while longer, that'd be swell.
While possible it will be only used for the rich, I'm going to take your futuristic prophesies with a grain of salt. Your prediction is as good as mine.
Who knows, perhaps we'll enter a point where vastly prolonged, virtually eternal life expectancy is as commonplace as a mobile phone today.
If gene editing gives us those things before science gives us space marines and power armour I am inventing the latter to deal with the former.
