Jesus that's fucking evil. I'm not touching this game or anything else the developers make ever again. More people need to see this.
Sounds like backers should call their bluff.
Quite a lot are, it is hard to get numbers obviously but the general atmosphere on the reddit is pretty angry
It usually is to be fair.
PP's reddit was really, really optimistic up until yesterday. Apart from a minor blip of disappointed linux users when Snapshot announced they were dropping the planned Linux version.
Of course it was crowdfunded on friggin Fig. I remember when it launched and everyone was saying the service was scummy and a bad deal for contributors.
Oh I thought you said Reddit in general, not that specific one.
So they let backers take the entire risk of development failing, then basically went "We have Epic's money now, so we're not obothered about what you think anymore. We don't care if you refund, their money is more important to us than the backers" - No matter how good this game turns out being, I will not be buying it. Making it Epic exclusive was scummy enough on its own, but that is just utterly disgusting behaviour.
Out of all the ways that companies are scummy on the reg, I can't wrap my hear around why people care specifically about exclusively on a free to use platform. Like, yeah, it's not ideal, but a lot of this just seems like moral posturing since it sincerely is barely even bad.
According to the AMA that went on today, Snapshot approached Epic, not the other way around.
And yet epic offered the deal; one that was literally too good to refuse.
real talk, running through a few AMA by devs who are caught in the backlash of going Epic Exclusive (hint: all of them). On top of the up front monetary and revenue guarantee offered by Epic (this is confirmed), most claimed that they believe in the competition Epic Store brings and is more than happy to be in the fight for the new revenue split. Other than "devs make more money" and "it's literally just another free client to install", there hasn't been any compelling argument on why everybody else should put up with the immense downgrade on customer options and service. I'll let this thread do most of the talking. So let's say you are not a fan of Steam, at least advocate for DRM-free GoG and/or other clients, such as itch.io and Discord, who provide BETTER REVENUE SPLIT. There are more consumer friendly ways for Epic to penetrate the market, and they chose the worst possible one.
Indies are struggling, we get it! However, as it stands, their participation are entirely selfish with little concern for their end user. Like most have already condemned, "hope the Epic money is worth it".
Huh, ok. Fuck you. Not like I wanted another excellent XCOM styled game.
Hope you choke on those greens, you greedy fucks.
To me, taking (and if what they say is right, actively seeking one out) a deal like this is a red flag that you aren't confident that your game will sell enough and you need the safety net.
Basically they feel the sales are going to be less than what Epic is offering.
Major red flag honestly, otherwise they would have just put it on both stores and not taken this deal.
Because that "free" platform considers forums, reviews or any way of feedback "toxic", because that platform is buying exclusives so people can't buy their games where they want like Steam, GOG, Humble, etc (And for some people like me on the third world, region pricing is critical), because linux users can't use it, and I can keep going.
Bullshit, they promised an Steam and GOG keys on release, it was on their kickstarter page. What they have done is not only wrong, it is simply evil and scummy.
It is not about "morals", it is about not scam the people that they paid you money so the game can be made. Read the thread before making such statement.
That is literally what a villain on a movie would say.
Look, I understand that Indie developers have it difficult, but that doesn't mean that they can fuck with the consumers so they can succeed. I don't going to let them fuck me in the ass because "ohhh my poor developers". I am a developer myself and It never occurred to me to fuck with my client so I can get some extra money.
The reason people are pissed about this, the backers were promised gog, steam. Now after taking that deal they're now forced to use the Epic launcher, which has shoddy security, has a major chinese company at the helm with spotty practices. No review system, no comments.
This would be perfectly fine if they were releasing a new game and decided to make it exclusive to the epic store. Instead of ripping it away from other stores where people were already following, and forcing them to get it elsewhere instead. Especially when the store in question has significantly less features, security and consumer protections.
They had promised the game on certain platforms, now they've been bribed to break that.
Wow, I can't believe videogame piracy is making a comeback after we thought we practically got rid of it by making our games easily available in a legal way.
Tangentially, I just checked out Rebel Galaxy Outlaw (One of the few games I'm really looking forwards to) to find it's also going to be Epic-exclusive. Fuck's sake
I'm not sure how, but this is a detail that I actually missed. My bad, that is really shitty of them.
Specifically the wording on Fig was a "Steam or GOG key on release". However, now only Epic keys are available on release and any other platform will have to wait for a year.
That's cartoonishly evil CEO of them.
You get backers to lend you money on good faith to appear successful and then make a deal based on that success where you're confident to the point where all the actual backers could pull out and you'd still be in the clear. A very interesting business strategy to be sure.
Gollop approached epic:

That makes this whole thing much worse than just being offered something too good to sell your soul for.
Just to make sure I'm reading this correctly, people crowdfunded the game with the expectation that they would be getting a Steam or GOG key, and now they will have to wait a year to get their keys, unless they want to redeem one on Epic?
Yes, and even that is a backpedal from their original position (made within hours, to be fair to them - but only because the backlash was intense and immediate) which was that you were getting an Epic key period and they were "sure you'd enjoy it just as much."
That makes this whole thing even worse. They voluntarily went out of their way to do something that they knew their backers - and others looking forward to the game - wouldn't be happy because they decided that they didn't care about what people thought and the money was all that mattered.
Holy shit to get a refund you have to go through a third party financial institution that is not from the US, requires your bank account information, and will take ~4 weeks for a refund.
It's been years, but I seem to remember Fig being borderlining between shady dealings and unclear with how the crowdfunding system works. Is that still the case?
