Dwarf Fortress launches on Steam with a brand new look

It would be super interesting to have dwarves be a lot more opinionated and independent in general AI wise to be honest, such as having a dwarf mine out his own section of the fort that is his because he felt like it, or have dwarves with sophisticated forms of insanity that attempt to pull off outrageous schemes, such as deciding to flood the fortress with water, and it would be necessary to have a dwarf psychologist to weed the dangerous ones out.
As much as I love DF in its current form I would really really welcome a UI update that makes stuff as accessible as Rimworld is. Just having functional mouse controls and context menus would be a significant improvement.
Though I would love to see it improve, I do no longer mind the clusterfuck that is the current user interface. Its all ingrained in muscle memory now. I would even now go as far as saying it has become exciting to use, as even after hundreds of hours I sometimes still discover new interface features or screens. And successfully memorising in which order to press over 4 different key combinations to do something as simple as placing a bed definitely provides a sense of pride and accomplishment.
It's sort of reminiscent of using vim a little bit.

Animator vs Animation: Dwarf Fortress edition.
Funny enough I have only ever had one fire in Banished and it was dealt with quickly.
Every one of my games ends with fire.
Every. Single. One.
Villains and schemes/plots are being added in the upcoming update.
Historical figures and visitors will try to lure your more suspectible dwarves into their nefarious plots and destroy your fort from within.
Personalities and relationships will also play more part, you might get a dwarf that happens to hate another dwarf form a plot with others to assassinate him in his sleep, for example.
Bit late to the party but I can´t tell you how much I look forward to this. The graphical style is right up my alley, too. Maybe a bit of a controversial opinion but I think I will prefer playing this over the "normal" ascii graphics.
After watching newer captnduck's 2015 videos I discovered this one: Spacefox 16x16 Graphic and Tileset (Updated 1/8/2013), really like it personally. It's also included in the latest lazy newb pack.
I wonder if the steam release is going to have some kind of tutorial to get people started.
"always attempt to select areas with the highest quantity of evil and savagery and never embark without aquifer, it helps your dwarfs stay hydrated"
Wall up your entrance and dig as far down as you can. That way the goblin armies can't find you.
oh no i thought i was safe with the lack of playtime counters and then you go and do this toady you fucker
All these people acting like you couldn't play with a tileset 10+ years ago
I want to get into this game before its on steam but I barely know how to install tilesets. Anyone got an ezpz guide to getting DF to be as user-friendly as possible?
Yes. Check out the Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Get the Lazy Newb Pack, it is a prepared package that includes various tilesets and utilities and a simple GUI to set them all up in a few clicks.
