I stand corrected then. Donald is (even more of) a fucking cunt.
I don't see why he has an obligation to take action against them. He didn't ask to be an influential figure and he didn't do anything to encourage a large influx of alt-right viewers. This sounds a little bit too victim-blamey for me.
He's literally disavowed them time and time again. Anything more would just be what you want to hear, not really any more effective that what he's already said. Although, he will probably say more so you're in luck.

But it already is taken as tacit approval in the eyes of his alt-right fanbase. His alt-right fanbase will only continue to grow otherwise. It's the same thing as Trump, he won't outwardly decry them, which is just as good as supporting them. They all scurry off and say 'we know he supports us, he just can't say he does or the media will attack him!'
His fan base is so large, it is his responsibility to wield that appropriately.
Because the alt-right firmly believes that silence is consent.
The dude namedropped PewDiePie beacuse:
a) They enjoy causing damage to people and their success
b) They wanted to tap into his influence to get the shooting more coverage
Which isn't to say PewDiePie does or doesn't do enough to shut down undesired ideologies.
Finding any correlation to say one caused the other is very easy to debunk in this pdf

Like, any investigation work for this isn't hard
as soon as I heard that stupid meme kebab accordion music playing in the background I knew what kind of nutcase this guy was...
the video was harrowing to watch. at one point in the video someone tries to tackle him but ends up getting shot dead.
Oh I didn't know you knew the shooter peronally and know he isn't a fan and is clearly just trying to sully his flawless reputation.
Do we know he actually planned this years in advanced?
so far, it doesn’t seem that big of a plan. Bunch of guns, shoot into a crowd and drive away.
Honestly, at most this was months in advanced. I feel like his edgy side decided “hmm I need a manifesto” and wrote all this shit to make him seem like some genius martyr.
Im sure they’ll search his computers and shit. It’ll be interesting to hear what they found on it. I’m almost 100% sure they’ll find discord servers for his group.
I know you mean "he didn't ask to be an influential figure" [to the alt-right] but he did "ask to be an influential figure" [in general], his entire career is influence. Literally the most reach out of anyone on the platform. He doesn't have an obligation to use it properly, no one has, but there's an expectation that he should.
You can argue that edgy circles of the internet appropriated his image and it's not his responsibility. I'd argue that he doesn't seem to have intentionally pandered to them, yes, but is still a fucking moron for not realizing that edgy jew-killing humor would work as pandering regardless of his intention. That section of his fanbase exists whether he likes it or not. To me, using his influence properly would mean addressing that.
'invaders'
I don't recall any islamic terrorism attacks going on in NZ, just this.
they're all still there
Please don't give him any measure of credit, at least not less than a day after it was perpetrated. He just applied basic thought to this planned atrocity.
I don't mean to take away the spotlight from the shooting by saying this, but can we not advocate for the shutting down of entire websites like 4chan and 8chan?
like other people have said better in this thread, calling for the mass removal of entire websites will only lead to an internet where online freedom is only a distant memory; as whatever people/government entites deem "bad" could be removed just because they disagree with it.
there are good parts of 4chan and 8chan that facilitate discussion and fun times. 4chan is also an important part of internet history, helping to shape a lot of the internet culture we have had for more than a decade.
but yes, poltical echo chambers like /pol/ and the like have clearly gone too far and I understand and sympathize with removing nasty spaces like that. I just don't think we should be so quick to call for the mass deletion of entire sites and more surveillance , as it will affect innocent users and could ultimately turn into mass censorship and information hoarding by the government.
that being said, this is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. hopefully we can eventually come to a solution that stops evil people wanting to harm, but also keeps the internet freedom of the the world safe.
Saw a webm of the shooting. Wish I didn't. Videos of other shootings like Las Vegas never phased me because its normally just people doing whatever, bullets fire, and then a panic. The video from the shooter's perspective is mortifying... some people are running, a dude trying tackling him, and then others are frozen in fear. The guy doesn't care.
I also mentor a student who is the head of the Muslim Students Association on my campus. I don't even know what to do for him. I'm shook by the footage but I can't imagine what its like for him seeing his community targeted like this. He's gonna wake up to international news about this and he's gonna have to lead his MSA chapter through this ordeal. I sent him a message saying he should let me know if he needs anything like time off or someone to talk to... but how the hell are you supposed to respond to this?
I bet the next major school shooting will be live streamed thanks to this.
If they do, will be interesting to see what Discord's excuse is for not dealing with this. They harvest huge amounts of data, so I'm surprised they didn't pick up on this at all.
Regardless of that, if he ends up in prison (I don't think there have been any confirmation on if they got him and associates yet), but as soon as he is in prison I wouldn't be surprised if he was killed.
Not that I agree with this, but can't really say he doesn't deserve it either.
There are a lot of incredibly extremist muslims inside of certain prisons (especially the ones he is likely to be sent to), and doing something as bad as shooting up a mosque and planning to burn it down is basically the worst thing you can do to insult them, since despite being extremist, they still put God as their highest priority, and it's basically an invitation for them to kill him.
Even if it isn't as extreme as that, I can't imagine he will be treated that great in prison by other inmates either, especially if he presents himself as an anti-social "memer" who does things for the "lulz". The people in the prison he's going to are going to walk all over him.
To be fair any shooting could've been streamed since smartphones have been out. If its any consolation the footage gives evidence for trial, but more importantly it gives emergency responders the location of the shooter so they can stop them faster.
4chan I sorta agree with, but almost all of 8chan is compromised. The good parts of the community can just go back to 4chan or find another forum.
If theses websites werent ok with hosting and spreading ideologies of death, sure. As it is, they directly contributed to crimes of hate.
The way you run online communities has an impact on the real world. It's easy to shut your eyes and pretend there is not responsability but it doesnt change the reality.
How far are we willing to go with this though? How much rope should we, and the state, be willing to give these websites?
It's all well and good saying that websites like 4/8chan, or Reddit, should be doing more to police themselves and keep cesspits like this from forming, but it's not as though we've learned anything new about these communities today. Anybody who was paying attention knew by now exactly what kind of people were active in these communities. If site administrators are incapable or unwilling to act, or the providers that host these sites are incapable or unwilling to act, then inevitably the state is going to step in and take up the role itself. And by that point it will be too damn late for anybody to complain.
Planning isn't just walking into a crowd and shooting... its learning when people attend the mosque, what the building layout is like, weapons training, etc. From the video excerpts I saw the dude absolutely knew what he was doing and where to go to find more victims. He shot nearly 20 people in 30 seconds.
I also don't think mass shooters ever plan to get away with their crimes. They almost always go berserk and either kill themselves, give police a joyride, or (rarely) surrender.
Shut down 8chan, force ISPs to block access to it. And give 4chan and Reddit an ultimatum:
"Remove the nazi boards/subs or we'll shut you down too."
Unfortunately, because the USA is controlled by Nazi sympathisers (or even actual Nazis) this can only happen outside the USA.
Is it just me, or have shootings like this became way more extreme ever since those sites (and the internet in general) have become more popular? Even Columbine, as tragic as it was, the kids still had some small strand of compassion as to warning off certain kids to not come into school, and sparing the lives of other kids.
In this sort of shooting, it feels like this person has been stripped of the fundamental parts of what make him human. He literally can point a fully automatic gun at someone who is begging for mercy and without hesitation shoot them, and then additionally execute them if they are still alive. I'd even argue that our primitive/human instincts we have from when we are cave men aren't even this strong.
It is the most fucked up shit I've seen in my life for a while.
Really makes you worry about the direction our species is developing in.
He - rather, it - is a defective unit at this point. Nothing more.
I just want to preface this post that I am not being contrarian in bad faith and am legitimately seeking to be persuaded on this issue.
I don't think shutting down /pol/ on any board is going to truly solve anything. It would disorganize them, it would slow them down a bit, but it will not create any real lasting solution. So while I am a-okay with eradicating any shitty pol-like place, it'd be a temporary solution at best. Banning these platforms will just cause them to remobilize and congregate elsewhere. Someone will recreate a forum or chan or discord or something for their gross community.
Also, while this isn't a level comparison, guys, this forum has had closure brought up for ages. Would having our forum closed effect us? For certain. Would it end us entirely? Highly doubt it. And we merely enjoy each others company yet we work on back-ups and stuff. I feel like these people, while anonymous and less organized, find a great deal more camaraderie in their lonely world with one another and would similarly find ways to keep going.
A real solution is going to be tougher. It's going to have to focus on helping the people behind these posts. To be honest, I cannot think of a real solution my self. Obviously containment is not working. But how do you reeducate the fringe of society? This is a weird sociology problem. All I can think of is a well coordinated media group reverse meme-ing a bunch of people into being not-nazis which is ridiculous.
I'd also like to add, I'm sorry if this post comes off emotional and blithering, because, at the moment, I am. I tried writing it the best I could but I feel physically sick reading all this news and I think throwing out ideas and discussion might make me feel better.
Sorry if I'm blind and it's been posted but news outlets are confirming 40 dead now, and officially being labelled as a terror attack (obviously).

IEDs were found attached to cars not long after the shooting as well, were quickly disarmed. I don't think I saw anyone post that either?
i can and i will
Milo Yiannopolis has become a nobody since he got deplatformed off of Twitter and Patreon and such. Deplatforming works.
