Oh no, not kill the internet, just restrict everything, ban VPNS because nothing to hide etc etc. 9/11 fucked the US decades to come, and I have no doubt this event will be similar for any internet-related bill to pass.
Don't watch the video. Don't read the descriptions of exactly what happened. It will not benefit you in any way. It will literally only serve to harm you.
(I updated my post right before you replied, as I saw my phrasing was a bit vague at first and needed clarifying on my end.) I agree with the generality of "old people doing stupid shit without a reason (or worse yet, a bad reason)", but I don't think this one instance is big enough to be an internet freedom kill-switch. Something to restrict the entire internet would have to be pretty massive. (Not making light of this shooting, of course, I hope the distinction is understood.) ...but, yeah - I certainty think it won't help matters any, but even in terms of internet freedoms, I don't see this alone being too big, unless more events like these happen, and come in rapid succession.
The fact that he uses immigration as a justification for this act is pretty appalling. Let's face it, he was an angry and troubled kid/young adult who wanted to be noticed and performing this horrid act was the only way he could get it. If immigration was his sole motive, why gun down innocent people in the street who were likely born in NZ? Also this whole talk of the "invaders" causing violence is pretty hypocritical, considering the last major attack was in 1985, and that attack had nothing to do with Muslims or even immigrants, it was to do with Greenpeace. So the only terrorist and "invader" as he calls them, is him? Also as a side note, how the fuck did he get a full-auto weapon in NZ?
These people need an "enemy". They need someone to blame. They need someone to hate. They need some sort of scapegoat to justify any action they might do. It's how they function.
They only need it when the person in question is white. We've talked about this in our College media, sociology, and human nature classes. When the shooter is black or indian or not white, they're just evil and they're at fault, like they should be. When it's white, it was metal music, no it was DnD, no it was violent movies, no it was violent television, no they played doom, no they played GTA, no they have mental illnesses and were bullied. It's sickening.

I mean, I know expecting any sort of reason from a person like this is unlikely, but how can they say things like that and they completely contradict them? Even some of the worst serial killers and murderers in history have stuck to some "agenda" and rarely if ever broke away from it. I guess since I'm a normal functioning person this sort of thinking confuses the hell out of me. To give an analogy, it seems like saying "I hate tomatoes" and then proceeding to eat tomatoes of your own free will. It just makes absolutely no sense to me.
It says in his 'manifesto' he planned it 2 years in advance
Not just your country mate, it's an overall global society issue.
It's semi-auto I believe? With good trigger control you can achieve an effect similar to full-auto. The video was fucked up and this guy was a nutter. How come this guy wasn't a massive red flag to anti-terror units, or do they not take white nationalism seriously, was it the memes? My heart breaks knowing this will only perpetuate the circle of violence within certain circles.
Even the use of the word immigrant is disingenuous in most debates in my opinion. It's not about immigrants, is it? It's about brown people. Nobody cares about illegal immigrants from Canada, we're not asking for a fucking wall between the US and Canada, and nobody would be bothered by some hypothetical Refugees from the UK. Conservatives don't like brown people existing, but at the very least they reckon they can maybe stop them moving in (first), and letting them pretend it's anything else is a disservice to logic.
this event literally happened because we prioritised the marketplace of ideas over deplatforming ya fucking plonker legitimising conspiracy theories and hate speech by laying them out for discussion doesn't work since the people pushing that shit aren't playing the same game you are these matters are solved, just like bloody vaccinations, globe earth and evolution, what kinda ivory tower fantasy bullshit are ya huffing where we can just lay everything out on the table and just have a rational debate on whether muslims are sub-human or not

donald trump classy as ever has nothing to say but https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1106390965038788608?s=19
Honestly, as far as terrorism goes, this guy is a "genius." He concocted the most twisted feat within his means, and then slathered it with countless tie-ins to many "memes" and cultural cornerstones. Beyond /pol/ memes, he's implicated video games and pewdiepie and more in his actions and manifesto, guaranteeing his actions poison the cultural zeitgeist regardless of how "far" he manages to go.
Well, shit, that adds a dramatic twist.
This is quickly escalating into a large right-wing terrorist attack
He's a media bomb for sure. I don't see this blowing over particularly fast.
I remember Facepunch a few years ago when it was at a crossroads of ideologies with a lot more conservative opinions than now. I wonder alot about why the forums didnt grow toxic with the rest of gamer, internet culture.
So we're up to 5 conspirators?
With Donald Trump in office, we might not see him signing carte blanche another Patriot Act. But maybe his successor? After all, we need to tighten our monitoring of the internet to better prevent these kinds of people from organizing and festering. What better way to do that than to enact wide-reaching internet surveillance doctrine?
Moderation
Seems like it.
That doesn't make him a "genius", it makes him a monster. Anyone has the means to pickup a weapon and kill people, but what separates the sane from the insane is the will/restraint to not do it and the ability to have compassion for other human beings. All the other bullshit you give him "genius" credit for like the manifesto and memes is just that, bullshit. He used it as a way to normalise what he was doing, no other reason.
pewdiepie being an enabler for the alt-right has been a known thing for ages now, you can brush it off as those darn SJWs getting triggered over memes and heated gamer moments but it's not exactly a radical concept
I think a lot of it is due to the fact that the mods put a stop to the GMF's toxicity years ago. It used to be that place was fucking awful and they would coordinate to fuck with other FPers and were really smug about it 'cause they had mod friends'.
Yeah he spouted some memes and drew ebin catchphrases on his rifle before slaughtering innocent people, real cultural genius this one
I'm pretty sure when a tragedy of this scale happens one of his aides goes "Yo Don shut the fuck up for like 12 hours, we'll have one of our guys shit out a generic and inoffensive response so you don't fuck it all up." Whenever we get one of those "thoughts and prayers" statements you can tell Trump didn't write it.
