• Obsidian's "The Outer Worlds" spotted on Epic Game Store

Epic is like a 9 year old kid who just inherited billions from his deceased grandfather, and don't know how to handle the money.
I feel like an ass, but I gotta support OuterWorlds. I know too many good, passionate people working on that game. Already got the Epic Launcher because I use Unreal.
Honestly a good idea. If they did this, stopped the spyware, and expanded social features/general functionality I'd probably be happy that there was a new competitor to steam that gave a shit.
Wait never mind I can just buy this on console. No need to support Epic.
That's what I figured their big selling point was going to be, honestly. They've got plenty of money coming in from Fortnite, so they could have easily not gone the exclusive route and instead drop off 10-20 bucks from the price. I'm guessing that either their investors or the publishers didn't like that idea, though.
It's also on Windows Store if you don't want to indirectly support Epic that way. That's how I plan on getting it too.
If this trend continues with Epic I'm actually going to go out and buy a console and all my games on it just so I don't have to support EPG lol. I wish Epic would take this sort of stuff on board. Someone who has been a long time PC gamer, is literally willing to go out and blow $500+ on a console, just so I don't have to support their shitty business practices. Surely that should make them feel like they are doing something wrong?
I ended up finding the original quotes from someone at Epic saying the money was in the console business. Epic President: “The Money’s On Console” In a frank and open interview on Unreal 4, Gears of War and Bulletstorm, Capps claims that “piracy’s already had its impact”. “If you walked into [Epic’s Offices] six years ago,” said Capps, “Epic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying ‘Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company.'” “And guess what?” he says, “It’s because the money’s on console.” “We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.” Capps discusses the rise of free-to-play microtransaction based games, like Farmville, the “biggest game of all right now.” “So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming,” he concludes, “but it’s not going to look like Gears of War.” Unfortunately Mike Capps isn't with Epic anymore, so I can't say the people involved with the EGS are all a bunch of tossers and have said dumb things in the past, just most of them.
but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers I wonder where they are sourcing this. CDPR have flourished despite offering all their games with no DRM, which makes them the easiest target for pirates. I know they aren't technically "independent", but they do a lot of shit themselves. Slay the Spire has flourished despite having no DRM despite basic Steam. It seems the only people who ever seem to complain about Piracy, are huge companies who use it as a boogie man to justify some of their shit decisions.
I am tempted to pirate this game until the Steam version releases; but I think I'll just end up getting a cheap used copy for PS4 and be the most valuable customer at my poor Gamestop.
I don't know if it makes it any better but it seems it wasn't Obsidian's decision. Obsidian Entertainment was adding Steam achievements to The Oute.. They were still updating the Steam shit before it was announced.
I assumed it wasn't their decision. Honestly I might buy this on the Microsoft store, depending on how effectively I think I can dodge spoilers, just so I can support Obsidian on launch. I just refuse to give Epic even one god damn cent.
So how often is this myth going to be bandied about before it dies? I'm all for calling a spade a spade but there's some really fucking crazy misinformation going around on this forum right now about this shit, and no one seems to want to correct it for very long
What I don't understand is these game companies are seeing the immense backlash when they go exclusive to epic, so why the fuck are they still going to epic!?
Money. It's really that simple.
Yeah, I don't really get the "It's a Chinese government spy op" shit going around. Surely Epic have proven themselves untrustworthy enough on their own.
It's about time Valve releases Steam-exclusive HL3 and completely obliterates Epic (ans the rest of the industry), pfft.
The games industry is notoriously short sighted. A lot of people in the industry would take a million dollars now even if it meant no one would work with them ever again, and then complain later when no one wants to work with them.
Like I had some personal inkling that they were shady and owned by the Chinese Government but yesterday, in these very threads, that was disproven. Yet, in these very threads, people are going to repeat this misinformation ad nasuem. We really don't need to invent shit to be critical of EPIC.
I honestly feel this wasn't Obsidian's voluntary decision, particularly not Tim Cain's and Leonard Boyarsky's, especially after Obsidian recently expressed they've been so happy about being part of Microsoft now. I don't see Microsoft putting games on the Epic Store since they've got their own Microsoft Store and even put The Master Chief Collection on Steam. Remember, The Outer Worlds is still published by Private Division, which is a Take Two label. It's highly likely this choice was theirs, and I'm sure Obsidian pretty much had to accept it to honor their publishing deal.
It wasn't their decision. Some people are going to insist that they knew, that they were involved, or that they were informed. But if that was the case, why were they making steam achievements for the game when the switch to being an EGS Exclusive was announced?
Microsoft store it is then.
No, it's just still their RESPONSIBILITY. You don't get to voluntarily release control of something you have control over to another party and then be held blameless for what they do with it. You trusted them. You gave them the keys. They used the keys. That's on you too.
I feel there was likely trust broken by the publishers as much as their was responsibilities that Obsidian fell down upon that led to this. That doesn't mean it's entirely their fault, or that they're off the hook.
Just cause there were some employees working on Steam before they knew about it doesn't mean it was done on accident
So, how capable is Windows Store, what are the main drawbacks etc?
The download speed isn't great, especially if you're on wifi.

Feargus Urquhart probably knew, but he's a terrible businessman and Obsidian's survival has been in spite of his decisions more than because of them. The people actually making the game probably didn't know until the announcement was made.
People have never cared about supporting the base employees in spite of the actual company's decisions before. The game development company made a decision that led to this, and they knew it could lead to this. It's on them too.
