And yet, by their fruit you shall know them. Discord, bless it, does not have an amazing store experience and is using revenue generated by the rest of its service to prop up it's store (Primarily Nitro). Epic, on the other hand, well... that roadmap speaks for itself, and that is with the Fortnitebuxx rolling in.
The point that pisses me off is that Epic is ostensibly a bad thing; fucking Rami 'I made a Pixel Shooter' Ismail is celebrating and basically begging for the Death of Steam because 'it killed so many indies.'
that's steamworks, which I wasn't complaining about (but also the steamworks API sucks if you're not using C++ but that's another story). the developer portal/storefront is where most of my complaints are and it's not where anything has really changed much. as for features, here's a list of things I wish steam had or did better: Sign application with a cert ESRB, etc ratings Crash reports Streaming installs Basic level certification (does the game have an exe in it or a virus?) Performance analytics Uploading a zip file > 250mb on the dev portal Better support for deployment from automated build servers
I have no idea how we get an 8 page thread this salty over a game essentially being free at release... That's how it works now. If the game is epic exclusive, it either doesn't exist or is free. I don't give a shit. Put it on uplay, Origin or Gog if you want to stick it to Steam, but don't fucking shove me into the turdpile that is Epic game store. I'll play whatever games i fucking like and i'll go about however the fuck fits me the best. GOG and Steam fits me best, Epic in no way does anything for me that Scene groups don't already do and Epic can't compete with those. Oh. I'm still waiting for my physical POE2 copy as fucking well. Obsidian has a lot of rope with a lot of people, but they've just ran out with me. New Vegas was a long fucking time ago and all the difficulty surrounding litereally every release after that as well as scummy misleading promises in the POE2 kickstarter leaves me severely disillusioned with that company. They've ridden the reputation of Black Isle into the ground and they're fucking done. The game is fucking free.
30% is a lot because it's part of the bigger picture: 40% goes to your publisher, 30% goes to Valve, 20-30% goes to income tax, and then that small bit that's left is how much you've made. it sucks
If you want a bigger cut, self-publish your game. Both Valve and the publisher brings you a service, if you don't want it, you are free to no use it. If you say "30% is a lot" then never release your game on console. Sorry, but you said "it's valve.... they legit haven't improved the developer experience for steam since 2008" that was a simple lie. And even if you narrow it to the developer portal", I honestly don't believe you that that hasn't changed in 11 years.
You're right but you've completely brushed by my point, why does everyone use the 30% standard to attack Valve but not GOG and other platforms? Surely someone saying fuck Valve for it should be saying fuck GOG too, yeah? Also, consider that the "small bit" the devs get is still a whole hell of a lot of money. Take GTAV, from what info i can find it cost $137m in devlopment costs, not including marketing. It made over a billion dollars by day three. Even if RSN only got 10% back, that's $100m in three day, the game's made $6b since not even considering ongoing purchases during sales and microtransactions. Granted, GTAV is a standout example, point is the devs can keep food on the table and the lights on.
You shouldn't. I still have several friends at Bioware, it will be a cold day in hell before I pick up another BW product after ME3's rollout, and they know it and undertsand why. If DA holds up to scrutiny I might purchase it, but frankly given whom is in charge and the time frame they have to get the game out, I'm not going to do anything but wish upon a star for about 4 seconds and then move on to other products I do have interest in. Devs are people; people can be as giving or greedy as their environment and predilections wont and want. If someone is actively fucking you at every opportunity, you have no reason to give that person any time of day. Move on. That includes companies, also made of people. Pay the people that give a shit about you, don't pay the people that don't. It's the only power you have.
GOG is absolutely relevant being a competeing store front and for use in the example take the same cut as Valve. Valve being the dominant market force doesn't inherently mean they should or have to reduce their cut, regardless on opinion if they should or not
It worked for the PS2 and PS4...
What is with your hatred of Sony? That isn't even true.
ah come on. i just wake up early to check good news in fp this morning. instead i got this.i guess i will buying devil may cry 5 instead
lmao come off it. Your precious Nintendo also rely entirely on exclusivity. Console exclusivity is quite a bit different from storefront exclusivity. Sony, MS and Nintendo generally pay for the development of their exclusives. Epic are not doing that, they're buying up the rights to publish already completed or in development shit that they haven't had a hand in until that contract was signed.
What are you even talking about? Console exclusives are a totally different thing. On the earlier days, Sony won developers because it was much easier and cheaper developing games for the Playstation 1 compared to the Nintendo 64. That's how Final Fantasy VII ended up being a Playstation exclusive. Nowadays game exclusives exists because the studio belongs to Sony or because they invested money to start developing the game. That's why Bayonetta 2 is an exclusive to Wii U/Switch, or Spiderman is an exclusive for PS4.
Its not worth it, Vin has this absolutely hatred of Sony which might be justified but it comes off more as fanboyism.
Fuck that, I'll never buy a game on the shitty epic store I will be playing it for free... if you know what I mean
Guess New Vegas gets another year of service for me, then. 'Cause I got spuuurrs-...
so in about a year's time steam won't have any major releases at the rate Epic is going.
I can see this game getting poor sales in the first year of release. Shame because it looked good. Fuck you Epic Games.
Hey, atleast when I buy something off of the MS store I don't need to ever worry about it after my games.
One could argue that piracy is the only ethical choice in this situation, as supporting the epic store is supporting their chinese majority shareholders, which supports the oppresion of religious and political dessenters in China. It's supporting murder, essentially.
Nintendo has treated devs like absolute ass every console, you literally have zero room to talk.
God damn it obsidian, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBOMlWl7fFk
Don't want to put it on steam? Fine, but at least put it on smaller stores like GOG, stop this dumb exclusivity.
There's no way they're avoiding Steam on principle
Isn't this like, a bit odd? Weren't Obsidian basically marketing themselves as "Bethesda but we actually care about our games and our fans", and then they pull this shit that basically says "Fuck our fans, we got offered a big enough check to fuck you over and we couldn't refuse."
Hit the nail on the fucking head. This is all I've been thinking about at work since this story broke. So many people are rolling out excuses about how we should back this decision and the Epic Games Store because it's "better for developers" as though it's the 19th century and these poor devs are losing arms in the factories or developing black lung in the mines so that big bad Valve can squeeze a few more dollars out of them. It's all bullshit. This is big business, This is a multi-million dollar industry. The developer and publisher will ultimately do whatever is best for them and their bottom line, irrespective of what is best for the consumer. They don't really give a fuck about you or me at all short of getting us to give them our cash. In no way are the developers of these games the "little guy" being pushed around. We, the consumer, are. Nor do I buy for a goddamn second that Obsidian is completely absolved and innocent in all this. Certainly there is communication between the developer and the publisher; this can't be some surprise that snuck up on the heads at Obsidian. And even if it somehow was, it still falls at their feet for being completely obtuse about the release of their own product. I couldn't give a fucking wooden nickel about what's best for the developers. I'm worried about what's best for me as a consumer. And if they want to release a game on a platform that isn't in my interest to use, I won't buy the game. This isn't a charity case.
If CyberPunk is an EPG exclusive, I'm quitting gaming forever. I am so excited for that game and if EPG ruins it for me, then I'm no longer going to bother with gaming period since that means a majority of the industry is supporting this bullshit and I don't want to be a part of it.
Already debunked, CDPR said hell no.
How much would Epic have to pay CD Project not to release their game on their own store I wonder? 🤔
