So much more than they'd make from the sales of the game.
CDP are directly affected by Epic. They already had to compete with steam -- which was not anticompetitive by nature -- and now have to "compete" with Epic.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of "ethical" platforms teamed up against Epic. It's an existential threat to more than just steam.
That was one of the things I thought of when news of the MCC collection coming to Steam broke.
It would've been very easy for Microsoft to release it through the Windows Store exclusively, or to enter into a partnership like what we're seeing here.
Instead they partnered with Valve, and gave them a pretty massive shot in the arm after Epic had thrown a couple of punches at 'em.
Should also add you can literally build a functioning shopping cart in < 1 hour with Node/Laravel/Other Framework and React/Angular/Vue.
They are hiring people competent enough to use React, so I don't really understand how a cart is a "6 Month Goal", even when you take into consideration QC.
It's absolutely baffling. That they didn't even consider that people would want to purchase multiple products at once is... Like, what the fuck?
I genuinely can't explain it because the company that built Unreal just... Should not be this incompetent. I don't understand. They have so much money and it seems like they're just chucking it at the games themselves.
Its not incompetence. Its because they literally do not care about the consumer at all in this. They've said as much themselves, and the entire structure and design of the Epic Game Store as a service shows it. They literally don't care how many people actually are using their service, they just want to be the only players in the game.
Tbh I'm not really surprised. Judging by his tweets and overall personality, it seems like Tim is the sorta guy to say "Epic doesn't actually have that much money so we can't give our store team that much of a budget to work with.", and then go home and wipe his ass with a roll of 100's.
MS might be smart and realize that the absence of large AAA presence on Steam leaves the Halo collection looking all the better.
On the other hand, I'm sure port of the MCC has been in the works for awhile (At least from the SteamDB leaks) so maybe not, but they sure are benefiting from it if that wasn't their intention.
this is so bullshit
This is bad. Very bad. Like "I'm going back to my 2000's childhood and grab/buy pirated copies" levels of bad. These people are such sellouts that I'm compelled to add them to a permanent shit list.
I don't know if this sentiment has been expressed somewhere else in the thread but personally these exclusivity deals, even for games I was looking forward to, just means a lost sale from me. There are so many games out there that go down in price within months or even weeks of release that I don't even have enough time in the day to play, let alone trying to remember when this game or that game will be coming on Steam. I just won't bother. I already have a backlog of singleplayer RPGs.
To be fair though, the indies who are accepting exclusive deals are doing it exactly because of what you say. Game development is one of the riskiest forms of entertainment in the world because of all the resources it costs to make a game, but you have no idea if it's going to do well or not, especially in an indie market. The kinds of indie developers that accept the deal with Epic are doing so because they realize they aren't a Toby Fox and don't know if their game will sell well or not. Since Epic's payout is likely at least enough to recoup development costs, it's no wonder they'd rather choose taking the deal and perhaps making less overall sales and dealing with the flashback than putting their games out in the world where they stand to lose everything.
Fuck AAA studios (or Pheonix Point in this instance since they knew they had a banger of a game and they fucking blew it) though. Since they have access to console markets, they can afford to sell the games exclusively only on the Epic store and just make a lot of money off the deal anyways.
And most of all fuck Epic for doing this shit.
Thing is though, I'm not worried about it in the long run. Epic seems to be focused on trying to make a good experience for the developers in turn for fucking the consumers over because every single other Steam competitor has tried and failed by putting customer service over all else. What they don't understand however, is that you can't just disregard consumers either, because selling a game is a two way road between developers and consumers. For now, sure, Epic can buy out all the exclusivity deals with game developers they want, but in the long run, they cannot keep this up as it's simply too expensive, even with Fortnite being the cash cow it is. Unless Epic drastically improves it's customer service, as soon as that happens, everyone's just going to go back to Steam. Unless Epic store steps up to the plate and tries to actually court customers, the Epic store is doomed to fail. Considering what Sweeney has said so far, that's bound to happen.
oh no guys watch out!!!

Literally no one is saying this though? No one is excusing the EGS or this entire situation because it's "better for the developers". The point we're trying to make is that yes, some of the fault lies with the developers, but they are just following what's logically the best option for them. It's Epic games who are the ones who have started this whole shit and they're the ones that should be getting most of our ire out of this. Yeah, fuck Obsidian for this and fuck Koch Media for Metro and fuck whoever developed Pheonix Point because I literally cannot give a rats ass to remember who they are right now, but most importantly, fuck Epic for screwing over consumers at every turn.
Unless your frame of reference is literally just this topic, there are absolutely people who are excusing this move because it's better for Obsidian.
It's not a popular opinion I admit, but it's certainly there.
It's kind of funny how steam single handedly stopped a lot of piracy by making it convenient to buy games on PC. And now you have Epic pushing people back into piracy because their trying to make it as inconvenient as possible.

Epic is trying reslly6hard to compete aren't they. That would be fine if the client wasn't such a big pile of trash.
Literally the only resistances I see everywhere else is "boo hoo stop being so entitled installing a free software won't hurt" and "Steam bad, need competition!". Not looking good for the defense squad.
I find it hard to be optimistic about Epic being met with any sort of poetic justice. They're celebrating the success of Metro Exodus on their platform;
(paraphrased) "We're so happy that it's the games that matter, not the store you buy them from", they say.
Naturally, it's all about the games, unless we're talking about stifling anti-consumer and anti-competitive practices, then it's about the developers' well-being.
Ouch, time to pirate yet another big release. First metro, now the outer worlds. Hopefully it's good enough to make me want to buy it when it comes to steam and goes on sale.
Their gdc talk completely disappeared from the internet. Impressive. I was trying to track down that exact same line.
And another one gets added to the torrent list.
Epic is saving me lots of money, at least.
Shhhhhfuck. I caved in and bought Exodus and it turns out this is now Epic's standard behavior. I feel kinda bad because I contributed and because I have Chinese spyware on my PC. Oh well, I'm not buying any more from their shit
store, fuck off.
Isn't Outer Worlds going to be online only?
They likely won't be. I'd say the vast majority of the consumer base simply doesn't care and will just go where the game is, rather than demanding it be on a specific storefront. So long as it's another launcher you can download for free, the average user won't pay it any more mind than "Oh, I guess it's like Battle.net or Origin then. Alright, let's download EGS."
Let's be realistic about this: game industry boycotts almost never work. It's very unlikely Epic will see any sort of repercussions, especially so long as they aren't even doing anything illegal. I'd even expect this practice to become more and more prevalent with upcoming major releases.
I know kinda ironic considering this thread but from the steam page:
"The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division."
Huh strange, from the trailer I always thought it was a multiplayer game like Fallout 76 lol.
Well, rip their sales then. Almost everyone is going to pirate this just because they don't want to use EPG. (Not that I support that.)
I'm all for supporting developers, but if they are going to actively take steps to fuck over consumers and force them to use some platform that they don't want to use, then you can bet consumers are gonna do some shit to fuck them over in retaliation.
Wouldn't surprise me if they slapped Denuvo on top of it or smth as well.

Ha
If we can mass tweet this to Obama we can start getting awareness
Welp, just fuck all my shit.
I was really looking forward to Outer Worlds and now this happens again. Not buying it. Fuck you, Epic.
