This literally says there won't be any more updates and that people has to trust that one day they'll eventually re-release the game. I personally got no faith in them.
You will be heads down in a pile of shit alright Just abandon the fucking thing now that you admitted it was screwed from the launch
We're talking about a long time cash cow, not a game people will buy ONCE, are you insane!??!?!?!
Like most greedy companies they don't want something that makes a lot of money, they want something that, if it succeeds, will make all of the money. If they can't have that they'd rather just have nothing.
I wish Valve would communicate this much with us about open sourcing GoldSource.
Where's money in that?
valve: [announces a dota 2 card game] community: nobody cares about a dota 2 card game valve: we're doing closed beta tournaments and letting streamers show off the game! community: nobody cares about a dota 2 card game valve: alright release is coming up guys, here we come! community: nobody cares about a dota 2 card game game releases to record low players for valve, dies on its arse within a month valve, months later: man guys we really didn't see this coming, it just really surprised us that nobody wanted to play this game
Some games pull it off, like Sea of Thieves and Fortnite (remember when Fortnite was about fortress defense?) But those games didnt spurn the interests of multiple of their own fanbases before coming out with something that would appeal to practically none of them
"Who killed artifact?" https://i.ytimg.com/vi/boZamkRMCfg/maxresdefault.jpg
Valve, you're too late. Hearthstone has a hold on the market, and with Gwent getting mobile versions soon (which is a large audience for these games), you're also losing your chance to be a 2nd place player. You screwed up your monetization so bad that people will forever know Artifact as "that one game with the worst monetization." You literally put out a game that none of your fanbase wanted, and not because of "you may think you don't want this but you do", but because NOBODY wants it. You know what your hardcore fanbase wants, Valve? What they've been screaming about wanting for years? Just a competent, well designed, and well written single player game. Doesn't even have to be Half Life 3 (hell it probably shouldn't considering most of the core HL people are gone now), just something good without all the moneitzation bullshit. I know that's probably not gonna make you the most money in the long run, Valve, but sometimes, you gotta do things like this to save face and build up good PR, and giving your hardcore fans what they want is a surefire way to do that.
Looking forward to Artifact to re-release after 2 years
It's just, like... who actually gives a shit about Dota characters and lore? Like, really. There's so many of them and they're just not engaging enough to create an entire card game dedicated to them. Dota players are far more interested in playing Dota, it seems, than in the Dota characters. And I guarantee that not a single non-Dota player has any interest whatsoever in playing a Dota-based game. Because there isn't a base level of interest in the underlying IP.
This is foolish because I have a mild interest in Artifact. However the absolute toxic waste dump that is nearly every other facet of Artifact keeps me from buying in, because I'm only kind of interested. If Artifact was a 1:1 Hearthstone clone in terms of business model, I'd probably try it, but I'm not rewarding Valve with a sale for such a visibly trash model.
I shouldn't have said "not a single" because it's literally impossible for that to be a correct statement. So, fair, I was wrong. But I think in general my perspective holds true.
I never played a card game as I have zero interest. Is the lore really that important?
In terms of playing the game, not really. You can play the game just fine. But Artifact's whole thing is that it's a >>DOTA<< card game. That's what they want you to know first thing. And, in my experience, the lore of Dota isn't enough to compel Dota players to do anything -- as we've observed from the failure of Artifact. The lore isn't important, and I think that's... part of the problem. They're advertising on a weak point of the game. They're actively discouraging non-Dota people from playing it because it's a "Dota game".
When you bank on an IP it should be one that's well liked and versatile, like a true franchise. I'd sooner play a Mortal Kombat card game than a Dota one. I've played an Office Space cookie clicker. With Hearthstone Warcraft is pretty big and versatile already, but the presentation and model is so simple people can get into it as an entry level to its franchise. Dota? Not very big as a franchise. Much of it's original inception is already a "ripoff" of Warcraft and other blizz properties, it's kind of like a proto-HotS. Sure, it technically created MOBA, but that's forgotten because it's been stepped over by successors like League. Even with League I think interest in the characters and lore itself isn't enough to warrant successful spinoffs. Digital card games are a hard sell, especially with real ones being easily imported into things like Tabletop Sim. If you're going to try to bank on a franchise, make sure it's a healthy one that has some substance, or it'll be difficult to transfer to other things. Dota has no built-in fanbase. I still think it's weird Valve sought to get the rights, even in the face of a lawsuit with Blizzard over it. It doesn't scream to me as a particularly valuable property. I think an original property with identical design and gameplay from Valve would've been just as popular. Same goes for artifact, I think an original property would've been more received in this case as well.
Not how things work, Valve is not one game team and we know of at least 4 under wraps titles being actively developed including HLVR. I don't like artifact and it's an obvious fuckup on their part but just because the artifact team is focusing on their game doesn't mean Valve is doing nothing else. Stop buying into memes and do some research
A "better Artifact". That's the greatest oxymoron I've ever heard.
If Valve doesn't successfully revive Artifact, can they update this portion of their About Us page on their company site? Our games attract millions and define genres. Valve's debut title, Half-Life, was released in 1998. It won more than 50 game of the year awards, and PC Gamer even called it the Best PC Game Ever. Since then, we've released dozens of titles that changed the world (and two that didn't). Today, millions of people play our games every day.
how do you research something that has no concrete info? Valve doesnt communicate anything
My research is years and years of experience in absolute nothingness.
Keep up with the community, there are plenty of leaks and email conversations that talk about a multitude of titles, VR and otherwise.
Don't believe all the officially unconfirmed bad things the community says about them, you should believe the officially unconfirmed good things the community says instead.
I have to agree. You could probably write a book (a counterpart to the Last Days of Portal 2, perhaps) about what went wrong here, but Valve thinking they could sell to the DOTA crowd in announcing at Internationals or giving beta tickets to the attendees was really goshdarn dense of them. Honestly, if they want to go for thematic marketing appeal, I had the crazy idea that they could copy Blizzard by way of Hero of the Storms and turn Artifact into a game themed around all of Valve's IPs. Make it a crazy crossover with characters from Portal, L4D, TF2, Half Life and the like, and maybe even write a crossover between them. Granted, I doubt that would fly well either when people would still prefer their IPs get proper sequels instead of card game tie-ins, but maybe for the average gamer familiar with the rest of their library, it might attract a few more interested parties.
One, no one brought up any officially unconfirmed bad things in this conversation, period. all I was replying to was the comment that they were somehow ignoring work on other projects by putting this statement out. If you don't have faith in community sources and datamining that have lead to the uncovering of Valves Index months ago then that's fine and dandy, but dont try and claim anything other than willful ignorance at this point. Like I said, the 'valve is lazy!!!' meme is dumb as shit and doesn't even apply anymore/
I don’t really see the problem with using dota? It’s iconic and even if you don’t play it you’ve probably at least heard of it. It can also help expand the universe. I feel like it’s not so much artifact is a bad game, but the stigmatism against valve and the monetization gave it a rough launch that only tanked from there.
Dota doesn't have any benefit as an IP except to Dota players. It doesn't really have a particularly good reputation outside of its core demographic. It's just there as a game some people play or something. It has a million characters, not one of which is culturally relevant or known (unlike, say, overwatch). You probably won't know the name of a single Dota character if you haven't played Dota.
hahaha valve developing games how many years have they had "several" titles being actively developed
