My very old Athlon II system has been running ESXi for a few years now. Its not stellar speed, but its enough for a a few Windows Server and Linux VMs. The plan is to upgrade that to my current 2500k and combine RAM to bump it up to 32 GB. Yay more RAM.
So upgrading to Ryzen 2 will be a big jump for me all around.
Which is weird, considering it's just friggin' Source and we've all been running Source buttery-smooth for years; this did start out as a Gmod forum, after all. Even an original Xbox from 2001 could run Source (somewhat). Exactly how much did they modify the engine?
They pretty much took the portal 2 branch and retooled it. The rendering pipeline (amongst a ton of other stuff) is massively overhauled.
The use of SSE 4.2 is indeed kind of weird, but I guess if we want an evolution in performance we'll have to start using all of the SIMD functionality. Even if this unfortunately means that the game won't run on older CPUs. I think the best thing developers can do is ship an extra binary without SSE 4.1 or 4.2, but ultimately it comes down to whether they want to provide support for this.
At some point, I think it's okay to drop support, especially cause most CPUs that don't support SSE 4.1 or 4.2 are now 6+ years old. Still sucks though.
Same boat, only I'm still waiting for Zen2 so I can finally retire my 3570k build after six years of service. Planning on downsizing to a Fractal Meshify C (or maybe a Meshify C Mini) to run either a 3600X or 3700X with my Vega 64.
Wow, Im glad I held off on replacing my Core2Duo machine at the last minute and what great timing, I get a late birthday present from AMD.
