before I left in 2017, things were already going awful for us over there. Hours were constantly being cut, GAs were being laid off, or given 3 hours a week only, and every day was closing with one man skeleton crews, even on fridays.
I can only imagine how much worse it's gotten and is going to get for anybody still there.
It's not a skeleton crew if there's no crew at all!
GameStop, gradually becoming nothing more than a Ghost Ship.
I'll buy the company but best I can do is 3.50$ or store credit :/
On the one hand, I'm sad because I liked heading to GameStop to pick stuff up and ending up browsing and playing with the kiosks. One had even recently opened up in my hometown the past few years.
On the other, they dug their own grave on this one. Their business model was atrocious. That, and we really don't need dedicated game stores anymore with how mainstream the hobby has gotten.
GhostStop
I hope they can still survive as an online store. It's the only place where I can buy retro games and hardware without the risk of getting ripped off.
This is what happens when you do the exact opposite of what you say you're going to do. They didn't stop any games at all.
Man, that is an old picture for that article.
360s now in stock? The Burning Crusade?
It was taken yesterday and now you know why they lost $673m
There's still tooons of 360 and ps3 stuff in there, I found it really odd
went in like 2 months ago to try to buy ffxiv on PC and their PC selection was sooooo barebones, they didn't have it and didn't really have much of anything else either.
GameStop still has a ton of cash reserves and operating income. I can totally see them going out of business in the same vein as Sears, Blockbuster, Toys R US. They need to reinvent themselves, totally scrap their awful website and business practices.
it's a shame, videogame stores as a whole almost don't exist anymore in my country, which is why i visit gamestops whenever i'm out and about in a country that does have them
always much more fun and interesting looking at the merchandise and stuff up close
I like how they usually have some sort of older console games, but the employees have been pretty lackluster in my area for years, and the closest locations have been shutting down like crazy. I haven't really bought any physical games in a while, but I prefer Gamestop to Walmart/Target, it sucks that they're probably going to go the way of blockbuster.
Like so many other physical stores, they could have stayed afloat by shifting to the online market, and I'm sure some upper management pushed against it. Its a shame, but I won't really feel bad for the company itself, but I will feel for the good employees.
The gamestops around me are shit. They carry a lot of merch and figures now. But there's also a thinkgeek (owned by the same parent company) in the mall literally one floor down from GS that does that has better figures. When GS started carrying more shirts and merch a couple years ago literally eating into thinkgeek's niche I finally knew they were doomed.
They could have probably made up some of that loss if they weren't actively being dumbasses and destroying collectible boxes and manuals.
This isn’t good overall, as they are currently the most price efficient way to get certified retro equipment. This will drive more business and businesses to ebay
This was never good for people selling these things to GameStop in the first place, they lowball you to death.
Imo it was garbage even at that, in my area there are plenty of dedicated retro game stores that have a muuuuch wider stock and more dedicated employees.
There is one a couple of blocks away from home, I personally like getting my switch games on a cartridge, just for that resale value of the game itself + it is really easy to share it with a friend then. Thats why I have a reason to visit almost weekly, they are called EB Games here in though so the subsidiary may be doing better? A convenient thing with them is that you can pre-order a console months in advance and you can put money to it when you can afford it. This does not excuse their lowballing on products, but the dudes who work there show more interest than the usual Best Buy employee. A sad day for physical releases, I used to visit at a mom&pop video game store that also did video game rentals when I lived in another city, you guys should check those out if you feel like having a great nostalgia trip!
at a time when even walmart seems to have acknowledged their business model doesn't work and barely stocks games you'd think it would be worse.
I think ThinkGeek has been floating the company for some time now
Does it run on a skeleton crew?
I should probably use the gift card that's been in my wallet for years while I still can
GameStop has closed a bunch of stores in my area really quickly, mostly in strip malls. So fast that most of the signs haven't been updated and directories still point you towards the store. I remember when every mall had TWO GameStops, one on each floor (though maybe that's because there used to be EB Games and GameStop in the same mall until EB was bought out)
Big time. If you're lucky they'll be doing a special where they offer a more realistic price for your shit. I got a PS4 Pro so I took my regular PS4 up during a deal and got $250 for it, which I thought was reasonable
Last time I went to a gamestop, tehre was a shelf of nintendo games cramemd in the corner, which was Switch to 3DS to Wiiu, half a wall of PS4 games witih a few PS3 hidden in it, and the other half o the wall was Xbox with some 360 stuff. The rest of the store (over 60% of the floor space) was just shitty figurines or 'gamer' merch, funko pops, overpriced peripherals, refurbished hardware sold for almost the same price as new, and a single defeated looking employee who was being yelled at by a soccer mom.
They sold used games for barely less than new, so used was almost pointless. Hell, they often sold sued games without the original case too. Selling to them was pointless since a $60 game would get you $10 back in cash, or $15 store credit. It was pointless to try and sell to them. Thier used and referbished consoles were also trash. I paid $60 to get a 'certified refurbished' Xbox 360 from them (since it was cheaper and a more reliable buy than anywhere else was offering) and the thing gave up and died after a month. They wouldn't refund it though, because their sale warrenty was only for two weeks and I didn't pay $40 to get the long term one.
Aside from some niche things, they've just been shit for years. Everything form them has been subpar and borderline scam.
All I see sold at GameStop these days is Funko figurines, Fortnite merch, Pickle Rick shirts, and a select few games sold at full price. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
