If you keep being a moderator in Knockout! please change it, we need to do a house clean, we can't carry over there this kind of flaws.
Well, a weird thing about knockout so far is ratings are anonymous. Not sure if that's gonna change in the future but it does change things a bit
Making sure to police every little thing does nothing but hold together the facade of a hivemind/circlejerk a la NeoGAF. Just ignore that shit, it's a simple click from a troll trying to rouse reactions. One of the best things about FP for so many years was that the community could ignore or shut down trolls rather than turn it into a huge deal. I don't like it either, but I just shake my head and move on, you can't change people set on being dicks, so don't give them the attention they crave.
This literally never happened and we had ( and still have ) plenty of trolls, either passive or active, or you already forgot about the Tudd era?
Only banning these people to bring in order is what it holds together the forum, not the "oh well lets just let it roll because promotes activity".
I'm pretty sure the real difference is that cowards can use it to piss people off in threads about tragedies and face no consequences. They don't even need to see a reaction, they get off on the idea of people being forced to "ignore" their shitratings or out themselves as a crybaby who cares about ratings/banned for callouts.
The Tudd situation was only a situation to the people who made it a situation. Most people ignored him or laughed at him. He ended up banned due to constant shitposting, and that is a valid reason to permaban a user, imo, as that is actively poking and prodding with the effort behind it. Someone clicking on a rating and spawning gigantic fights between everyone except that person shows it's just a firefight created by the offended users, solidifying the troll's unbelievably low-effort trolling as effective.
Ignore. It.
It's not hard. The less attention you give someone that's making a quick click to stir shit, the less they're inclined to do it in the future. You know why? Because people are ignoring it. I really don't understand how this is hard to grasp.
Ofc it's Ga. I hate the mindset some idiots have in this hick state.
If it's low effort, then it should be a low effort ban
I'm just saying don't get triggered over a basic troll, but I can understand how wanting to find something to be outraged about can make that hard.
These forums have posting rules for a reason. I get that a lot of people liked oify but that's not how we want the forums to be. I don't see how ratings should be different
I couldn't care less about OIFY ceasing to exist. I only care about this forum being full of people that can actually let bullshit roll off their backs, and keep up with constructive conversations/debates when it's called for, yet not losing their sense of humor in other areas.
It's what made this place unique compared to shit like NeoGAF, 4chan, etc. - people with polarizing views all existing within the same place. I just feel like everyone getting enraged over something as fucking stupid as a rating is a slippery slope.
But... we ban people for shitposting here. Why not just ignore those as well?
That's in no way on par with leaving a little rating on a post. Tudd, for example, would rile people up by pretending to make calm, "collected" posts. Then he would keep on with it because some people would go back at him (knowing he was trolling already), and they'd get just as toxic, leaving half a thread banned and any further conversation on whatever topic stunted. That undoubtedly calls for a ban.
A fucking tiny rating at the bottom of a post? Has that person engaged in any type of conversation? No. Can it lead to a multiple number of people derailing a thread just to point out what everyone already saw anyway? Yeah. How do you keep that from happening? You ignore it.
Mods already have to scan through posts on the daily, ratings are placed way more often than posts are, why put that major workload on your back when people could ignore it and face zero further problems? Someone that rates something and doesn't post, is not going to post to start shit. That's why they rated. To just watch the people they know will throw a fit, throw a fit.
Why are you putting NeoGAF and 4chan anywhere close to each other?
NeoGAF had too much moderation, quelling any ideas the mods didn’t like. Making it barren of actual discussion.
4chan has next to no moderation. There is a mix of opinions, but next to none of it is constructive because 95% of it is shit.
We need a good balance. Allow constructive debates and differing opinions. Allow a sense of humor.
But rating trolling and blatantly offensive opinions are neither. It’s 4chan tier shitposting, and we’re not going to become some Russian type style tyranny by telling people to act like respectable adults.
Ok, you're right. I was thinking NeoGAF being the forum version of a police state and 4chan I just was thinking of /pol/ when typing that out. Left/right extremes in forum forms. My bad.
That's right and wrong, they are extremely decentralized but they have a hierarchy. It varies who they answer to, but generally they are lead by a chief of commissioner (titles that also vary in purpose and role), who in turn answers to the mayor or the city (or governor or state if they are the state police). It's said that being a chief of police makes you more politician than policeman because you have to appease the mayor / city, even if it's counter-productive to reducing crime.
Not terribly surprising.
Yeah but they apparently don't deserve to be treated with basic respect either according to you so that's not much better.
And piss off with the echo chamber bullshit. 'Fuck trans people' is not an opinion worth discussing or showing any consideration for.
While I don't agree with his views on disagreeing with trans people's beliefs... he explained his rating and not once did he say, "fuck trans people" or try to start a discussion on it.
Your rating was about the police system.
yeah, and I have a bridge to sell you
Why haven’t you rated the “Eastlake man arrested for beating pedophile” funny then? That’s pretty much the same “American police system is broken” thing as this thread.
Why do you always rate threads about bad things happening to trans people as “funny” or “winner” if it’s not about trans people?
why do I even need to clarify that this guy is blatantly lying
Again, there’s a difference between “unpopular opinion” and ratings trolling. As well as a difference between that and bigotry.
Banning for callouts is fucking stupid if it's in relation to ratings on a post within this thread, and honestly, removing ratings in sensationalist headlines was a great idea.
No idea why we went back. It allows people to driveby shitpost without the effort required behind posting, and you can rate any fucked up thing funny without any backlash, and if anyone calls you out? Congrats, they got banned because you're trying to bait.
This rule seriously needs to be rethought, if that's allowed why can't I shitpost on a topic like this and say that I find the fact that she was abused like this hilarious?
I agree, as long as you'd replace your blasé rating methods with valid (and public) explanations of your old fogey take on social matters, such as your self-confessed "dislike of transgender people".
People like that troll are why things like this happen.
You don't know his posting history then, Chryseus2 is iconic in being transphobic/homophobic:
Defending a teacher who refused to acknowledge a student's preferred gender:
Good on him for sticking to his beliefs, schools are meant to prepare you for the real world, not be safe spaces, it's no wonder so many people are unable to cope these days when they leave school. It's bad enough trying to keep track of peoples names let alone what pronoun they want used, might as well just number all the kids and be done with it.
Of course younger people are going to be more understanding, much easier to brainwash the young than it is older people, not that I'm that old mind you. I doubt they'd remain that understanding though, it's pretty much a given people become more conservative as they get older.
I'd hardly call using a wrong pronoun discrimination, the kid is complaining about disrespect when he can't even respect the teachers religious beliefs, not that one should be considered greater than the other. If it was intentionally malicious then sure the teacher should be fired, people need to grow some balls though if they get upset about such a little thing.
Schools should be primarily about learning yes, but you can hardly expect every teacher to conform to strict policies, frankly I'd not want to be in a world where everyone conforms to political correctness. There also appears to be increasing numbers of cases of people leaving school who are unable to deal with living in the real world, whether this is due to greater modern day pressures or poor education I don't know, but I doubt it helps by hiding real world problems that they will likely have to face. Is the teacher an asshole for not following the students wishes, no doubt but I don't think it warrants losing his job over it, hell if you applied such strict rules to my old school you'd have to fire most of the staff.
On the governor of this very fucking state pledging to sign a "religious freedom bill" that basically allows free range discrimination against LGBT+ from businesses:
Businesses should be free to deny service to customers for any reason, I don't think we need laws to regulate this since ultimately trying to deny service to someone because of their race or sexual orientation will almost always gain them a negative reputation, I don't think any large company would try such a thing but if a small business wants to deny service I don't see the issue. I believe you can't have a free society without giving people the freedom to be assholes.
Everyone has the right to freedom, that has to include the freedom to discriminate, your right the government has to protect people but there is a huge difference between protecting peoples welfare and forcing all businesses to provide service.
That's where you'd be wrong, I have aspergers and have been discriminated against on occasion, I don't think the government should have laws specifically to protect my rights, at the end of the day people need to grow a spine, if a business doesn't want to serve you simply go somewhere else.
Another hot take about transgenderism:
Your own experiences are just that, your own, there have been plenty of cases of people being wrong diagnosed with gender dysphoria including Big woop, who I noticed everyone in this thread ignored. I have no issue at all with people who genuinely have gender dysphoria it's the normalization of it I disagree with. Being gay or lesbian is perfectly normal, I don't think anyone sane can disagree with that, gender dysphoria on the other hand isn't a normal condition and to treat it as if it's a sexual orientation is plain wrong, being gay generally doesn't cause serious conditions like major depression and a high risk of suicide even with treatment.
Part of the same paragraph but, has a massive hot take of most people being trans as a fetish like being a furry:
I also make an important distinction between those with gender dysphoria and those who are transgender by choice, either because they want to be special or because they have some fetish, let's not deny it there are plenty of people doing it, frankly I don't think this is doing people suffering with gender dysphoria any favours, to put it another way it's like people with a genuine illness calling themself furries and being surprised when abuse gets thrown at them, can you imagine the shit storm if we had laws protecting furries.
He does the same shit every thread, post a winner/funny for LGBT people being abused or harassed, then spews some retarded hot take in the thread with 0 scientific backing. I guess after being banned a handfull of times for threadshitting, hes turned to saying "what I actually mean is" with some stupid ass copout.
It genuinely makes me feel unwell that people that have such hateful opinions like these are real, and not some exaggerated caricatures.
Banning callouts became a thing when people would go into a thread about Trump and say shit like "Explain this Tudd!" when he wasn't even there. It was little more than spam, and probably reasonable to expect a slap on the wrist for it.
What I don't understand is banning people for calling out people who are actively participating in the thread.
If I could roll my eyes any harder I'd sever my optic nerve.
What the fuck is this shit. I am fucking baffled that we're having this discussion again. What the hell is this linear thinking bullshit. Are you guys out of your minds or what? Do you all have amnesia? Is nuance fucking dead now? Can you guys only reason in absolutes? It's been a long time since I've been so pissed off at Facepunch for acting really stupid over an issue that's been fixed successfully over and over again in the past.
FIRST OF FUCKING ALL, whoever says "We can't ban for ratings because mods says we shouldn't care about ratings!" are legitimately retarded. "Caring about ratings" has always been about the idiots that complain about getting dumbed down for their stupid fucking posts and just can't accept that they're idiots so they'd rather derail the thread to whine about it. This doesn't mean ratings don't matter, just that you specifically can't complain that people think your post was stupid. It's just a general rule to avoid derailing threads every time someone gets dumbed down or disagreed with.
SECOND OF ALL, people have REGULARLY been banned by mods in the past for either spamming the same rating over and over again on all posts in specific threads, for spamming ratings on every post someone made on the forum regardless of context or for rating posts in a really inappropriate manner. This is because RATINGS MATTER, they do convey in a concise manner your reaction to a post and while they may be less useful or informative than a full post you're still expressing an opinion and that opinion might genuinely be unacceptable. Not ready to get banned for rating a news story about someone getting raped "winner"? Too fucking bad, don't be a moron next time.
THIRD OF ALL, where's the fucking nuance? Why are we SOOO afraid of the boogieman of "oh but what if my rating is misinterpreted?" For the most part, Facepunch mods usually err on the side of caution and it's not uncommon that bans related to ratings are reversed in case of a misunderstanding. Also, it's pretty much NEVER happened that someone gets banned for inappropriate rating once (unless it's blatant or especially egregious) and even then it's usually a short warning ban at first. USE YOU FUCKING BRAIN! If someone rates every rape news article "funny", that's pretty obvious. If it's more ambiguous, either let it go or as the person to explain themselves. What the fuck is the issue here?
Seriously, people that parrot "stop caring about ratings" without understanding what it actually means need to stuff huffing paint. What the fuck is the issue here? Why are we still debating this?
There you go ladies and gentlemen, the perfect specimen of homophobia/transphobia.
@SIRIUS
Just a heads up this guy isn't actually a new poster he's been permabanned using this exact name god knows fuck many times now.
