Don't think that's been done to damaged churches so far.
Holy shit, BBC ran a piece last week on the poor state of the cathedral and warning that a complete collapse was possible 'within 10 years'

Reminder that our Houses of Parliament in London are in a very similar state and the same thing could happen to them any day, with crucial renovation work not due to begin until the mid 2020s at the earliest
This looks like something that happened as a result of the renovation, probably someone doing something dumb and causing a fire is what I'm guessing.
Just look at this scenery, like a portal opened from hell.
well i'm a little late but there was the matter of the entire brazilian national museum going up in smoke last year, too
It's crazy to read comments anywhere about this. It's so saddening to read people write "perfect, a new spot for a mosque". Like what is wrong with people...
What a damn shame... I visited it once over a decade ago and it's a serious piece of gorgeous architecture. Props and best wishes to the firefighters.
But they wouldn't do that. The French value their history and monuments (at least most do) and the government would for certain not allow for anything like that.
I'm fortunate to have been able to see it in person a few years ago.
It's an important historical building and for many French people, a part of their national identity. There are firemen inside the building right now risking their lives to save as much as they can. I'm sure you can show a little more tact?
I don't understand the connection at all, honestly.
We have the technology...
I've seen people instantly blame Muslims already. They are so quick to use historic tragedy to fuel their bigotry its disgusting.
Most likely alt-right shills who want to imply its Islam-motivated vandalism or something.
I've seen people blame Muslims, claiming it was a hate-motivated arson. As far as I can tell this is entirely baseless.
because muslims are taking over europe urdurr
Putting words into peoples' mouths to get outrage points online.
Starting a flame war over fake quotes.
It's so sad that people find the need to do it honestly nowadays...
I think its just cause Im young or uninformed but I had only really heard this buildings name once or twice and Im not sure I get the significance of this. It is impressive architecture but why is this such a tragedy any more than some cathedral in new york burning down or something? Not trying to be disrespectfully I just dont know the history well enough.
Probably because none of the cathedrals in New York are 850 years old.
It is one of the oldest and largest standing cathedrals, not only an important piece of religious history but a critical and rare example of massive medieval architecture, not to mention the sheer artistry put into every stone that makes it up. It took centuries to build and is a major testament to the willpower of man.
I know a lot of people on this forum are not a fan of some of Obama's milquetoast policies but it's at times like this I really miss the presence of mind and poise he offered and moments of tragedy. He's not making it about himself and he is not claiming to understand fire better than firemen - he's just offering some articulate support.
How many things are 850 years old and still standing today? Not many, and we just lost another one. it's rarity, and testament to it's endurance are why it's special.
I just thank my stars I got to see this once as a kid before todays tragedy.
It's a very iconic building. Imagine the Library of Congress burning down, as a comparison.
The building's 800+ years old. It's a relic of time and a marvel it was still standing today.
It's been through so many wars, so many rulers, and then it goes up in flames just like that.
Just the classic "if people are offended by what I say, it means I'm right".
Imagine the empire state burning down, or the statue of liberty.
Or central Park reduced to bare Ash.
Not only is it an awe inspiring landmark older than AMERICA ITSELF it is an iconic symbol of france.
Without it, Paris has lost a great part of its identity.
