As undesirable as this is, some of the photos of it burning are beautiful in a way.
Looks like it. Here a cross-section of the cathedral. Hueg image.

And a closeup of the spire that has sadly fallen.

You can clearly see that the wooden roof construction rests on the actual stone arches and pillars. Looks like the church would even be able to stand if the roof was removed altogether. It held up marvelously.

Tough it did unfortunately fail in the center area, it luckily was the best spot to fail.
Nowhere near the walls, plenty of supporting pillars and nothing of real importance below it. Even the altar survived.
I'm so glad there's some silver lining to this, my heart sunk when I saw the headline thinking we were going to completely lose the Notre Dame. I have to say, that construction is incredibly well made and this is just a testament to how well constructed the building really is.
May the finest craftsmen from all corners of the globe join together to return the cathedral to its former glory. In 200 years people will be remarking on our work today. The Cathedral will outlast we who live now, and will be passed on and renewed with every new age. What we have lost is great, but greater would be the loss should we allow ourselves to be defeated by the forces of accident, malice, and decay.
Ohh, they will:

Yea I doubt the reconstruction effort is going to find itself short on funds.
Shame it took this fire to get people to open their pockets.
While it is 100% a tragedy this had happened, the revuilding efforts will be a blessing. From what I understand it wasn’t holding up the best and there were fights over who actually needed to maintain the building. I doubt these fights are going to be happening going forward, and Notre Dame will recieve some MUCH needed TLC and care and funding.
it’s a shame she had to burn, but there‘s a silver lining I think, and in a way this may have saved it long term.
Y'know, I think Disney might be taking their live-action remakes a bit too far.
Unironically agree with that post in the first pages which said it'd make for great album cover art.
I did say it was going to happen but I didn't think it would happen so soon

The 12th-century church is home to relics, stained glass and other works of art of incalculable value, and is a leading tourist attraction. Its organ dates to the 1730s and was constructed by Francois Thierry.
“The organ is a very fragile instrument, especially its pipes. It has not burnt, but no one can tell whether it has been damaged by water. Nobody knows if it is a functioning state or will need to be restored,” Bertrand de Feydeau, a senior French heritage preservation official, told the AP.
@Ghost901 I think was asking, but the organ wasn't burned but may have suffered water damage.
I wonder if this is going to make Notre Dame even more popular.
The large organ and rose windows are still present.

This is a huge relief, maybe bigger than you think. The blue glass in those windows would have been impossible to replicate, because the recipe has been lost completely to time.
i have no intentions of being distasteful about this incident, but i feel like i must raise the fact that a more fitting parody has already been made

Billionaires behind French luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent have collectively pledged $339 million to help rebuild the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral after it was engulfed by a massive fire on Monday. France will also launch an international fundraising campaign.
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/news/339m-pledged-to-rebuild-notre-dame-3919561/
According to Danish news sites, there's already been donated over 300 million euro towards the rebuilding.
I don't think the problem is that we can't replicate the colour of the glass, but rather that producing the right kind of imperfections with modern manufacturing techniques is very difficult. Also conservationists don't really want to replace parts because it compromises the integrity and the viewing experience so they would rather use replacement parts that stand out as replacements.
According to the AFP, theyre already at 600M euros in french and international private donations to help rebuild, and the official fundraising campaign isnt even up yet afaik.
Would they even need a fundraising campaign with 600 million euro?
The cathedral already needed a large amount of work and had to be renovated for the next 20 years even before the fire. I'm absolutely not an expert but I believe every penny will help. I expect reparations to take decades judging from similar projects.
There was many posts and I don't remember if this was ever mentioned.

16 copper statues that were around the spire that collapsed were removed last Friday for restoration, representing the 12 apostles and 4 evangelists.

Lol they're already asking for tax deductions, so the tax-payers will still end up footing the bill. I'm supposed to be impressed that a people that've dodged about 2.5 million in taxes are just now chipping in to fix a building whose disrepair was partly caused by a lack of public funds? Eat the rich already and we can fix all the cathedrals we want.
So many of the important artifacts, thank god.
just use all that money they stole from haiti lol
Never trust millionaires to deal with rebuilding efforts. Is the nation of France the one who has to put the money.
Ah, french billionaries. Trying to scam the state built upon people tearing down those who deemed themselves the rulers.
It it was Spain no one would bat an eye, but France? Oh boy...

Notre Dame Cathedral fire saw heroes form human chain to save Cr..
Britain's Sky News and other outlets reported, meanwhile, that the man at the hot end of the human chain, who quickly located the most iconic of relics -- the Crown of Thorns and the Blessed Sacrament -- was Father Jean-Marc Fournier, Chaplain of the Paris Fire Department.
Philippe Goujon, the Mayor of Paris' 15th district, said Fournier insisted on being allowed to enter the burning cathedral with his fellow firefighters, and played a role in the relic's rescue.
