A friend my mum had at school had a similar thing happen to him. A kid got tangled in some reeds under the water and a boy saved the first kid's life, but got tangled in the reeds himself when freeing the boy and ended up drowning.
Imagine the guilt that poor kid has to live with...
The best thing to do with your life, after someone selflessly gives their own for yours, is don't dwell on the survivors guilt. Get that therapy and cherish every last moment you can muster. It's charming what people will do with themselves after the fact, coming to realize just how fragile and precious it is to exist.
