• Having lost religion, Milennials and Zoomers turn to astrology (god help us all)

I'm chatting almost on a daily basis with an astrology-following person. It gets annoying quickly when everything seems to stem from astrology. Oh you're being dramatic, well it's taurus season. Ah you're a bit of a bitch, it's because you're Virgo, and so on and so forth. Can't help but having this song ring in my head every time I hear astrology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CFuCYNx-1g In ways I think it's worse than an actual religion, because direct conclusions are being drawn extremely fast out of thin air, whereas with most organized religious people, it seems to be on broader terms, e.g. karma or something along these lines.
Remember to justify being an asshole because you're a Scorpio. Taking responsibility is for virgin Pisces.
I'm a scorpio I gotta be a 24/7 horny idiot or I lose my power to explain all my faults with being born early november
Yknow it's funny, I'm a Leo and as a child I did find it a bit novel that I fit into some of it's trends? But astrology and other religions that are more fortune-based tend to fall into a trap where every fortune they can offer applies to everyone in some respect.
I mean, you hit it on the head, yeah. It's all purposefully vague and shallow so that there's that feeling of "oh shit, that is so me". Horoscopes follow the same manipulation tactic - "You will experience a fogginess in March that clouds your judgment". You mean, like, a headache? Migraines? Alcohol?
I also get the feeling that even though followers may believe this superstitious nonsense that they don't follow it passionately. It's more like "I'm a Leo and this defines me!" but then almost leaving it like that. Knew people in my life who believed similar (but even crazier) nonsense in a similar way and while they made a big deal on the surface that they believe in superstitious theories, they almost seem more like a mask or hardcore LARPing

Why is it predominantly females who believe in astrology and wiccan shit. Something is psychologically fucking them up.
as it turns out, the holy left behind by religion is not easily filled by thunderf00ts magnum opus "why people laugh at creationists" series
I don't see the problem with them doing this? Long as they're not harming others it's their life and they get to choose what it means
Probably because astrology and healing crystals and shit is usually marketed towards women in media women are exposed to. You don't see horoscopes in hunting or car magazines. It's still super one sided though, I can name several female relatives even who believe in horoscopes but I have never met a single male in my entire life who believes in any of that stuff.
It's not, and I'd argue that it's a good thing, but it is still weird!
We need to show these kids chaos magick.
I don’t if this is controversial but maybe because women tend to be more emotionally open? So they’re more likely to embrace spirituality?
This strikes a cord with me. I'm an existential nihilist. I was raised a Christian but I have since renounced all my ties to religion. While I am now a rational skeptic who bases his views on evidence and reason, I have become so intolerable to both religion and the supernatural. Every time someone talks about using religion or astrology as means of studying the world, I want to bash them and show them how wrong they are. Just talking about something that I disagree with gets me fired up and its hard to contain it. I was much happier before I was such a militant skeptic. I am proud to be skeptical and irreligious, but I am far too fallen to aggressiveness that it has ruined my life. I need to go back when I was tolerable and more open to others opinions.
Hey man i was the same way in high school and my early 20s. Probably wasn’t til the last year or so(and dating that girl I mentioned) I learned to be much less judegemental as an Athiest, and see value in religion. I think It’s easy for me to fall to nihilism but I’ve sort of learned how not be anymore.
This is why, though I no longer have any defined religious beliefs, I chose not just to believe in god, but to remain an optimist. Because I'm a natural pessimist who, in recent years, suffers not just mental side effects whenever I give into my natural tendencies, but crushing physical side effects as well. Nihilism is literally unhealthy for me and severely reduces my quality of life. That being said, it's not something you'll see me discuss openly unless people ask me personally, or I'm at the local UU church where we discuss stuff like this in a roundtable ever week. So I wouldn't have any problem being friends with someone like you, and I doubt you would have any problems being friends with me.
If you leave a bullshit-shaped hole open in your head, a lot less benign things can fit in.
Partially because it's marketed towards them, but also because a lot of spiritual bullshit is far more empowering for women than religious bullshit. Traditional Religion tends to promote conservative traditions, a man should lead his household- a wife should be obedient etc, whereas new age religion tends to be far more nebulous in nature, with lots of feelgood shit and no hard rules that must be obeyed- and therefore tends to have a much more liberal slant to it. It's still bullshit, but it's not as rooted in archaic hierarchies that tend to put women down.
I don't know about you guys, but I think Nihilism is pretty great.
Capricorns need not apply
only religion I need https://youtu.be/RfCiefs0k3k
Yeah, well Aries 3:16 says I just whooped your ass.
It all depends on how you look at it. You can believe nothing matters, so why bother doing anything worthwhile because it's all pointless? Or you can believe nothing matters, so why not try your best to enjoy yourself and be a good person because it's healthy, enjoyable and worthwhile regardless of whether there's some grand point to life or not? I don't personally consider myself a nihilist but I've always felt it's unfair to consider it an inherently bad thing.
We should not encourage superstition. There is no merit to believing something that has literally no evidence whatsoever for its legitimacy. If you need literal bullshit to feel good about yourself or your life, you should seriously consider therapy instead.
It's all fun and games until they start believing that drinking piss cures throat cancer and spending hundreds of quack spiritual therapy. Astrology is like the gateway dumb that leads to progressively more potent dumb in my experience

If it works for you and makes you a better person, yeah, I agree completely. It just won't work for me - at least not with my current physical and mental health issues. That's okay though. I literally do not give a shit what people chose to believe as long as they're progressive and tolerant. And I don't think anyone else should, either. Needless to say, I'm not a fan of people who love to talk shit about progressive religious people for no good reason. Like, who cares if they believe in some form of god or follow the teachings of the Buddha? As long as they don't push it on people and are working to make the world a better place, they're cool in my book.
It is literally human nature to seek comfort in belief. If someone has superstitions that they lean on when things are tough and out of their control, there is literally no effect than a positive one for the individual. There's no reason that such people need therapy. At all.
Things being "tough and out of their control" are exactly the scenario in which they should seek therapy...
