You took a long and detailed response and basically said 'sorry, no' Can you imagine actually posting like this?
Saying that Steam is "just a game store" is like saying that AWS is "just cloud storage." No. No it's not. There are a shitload of features involved in Steam that you'll never see as a consumer. You as a consumer have no interest in their sound API, or their networking API's, or the literal dozens of vital features that Steam provides to developers. The 30% cut isn't just a standard in the games industry, it's a standard in pretty much any industry you can think of, and in Steam's case it's perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure how factual it is, but I've heard that Steam's 30% cut only profits them 8%. Eight. Percent. Out of 30. Y'all fuckers have no idea how expensive this stuff is because you just look at it at face value. Actually look at the inner workings of Steam and you'll realize how dumb you've been. Or you can just keep sucking Epic's cock because... reasons?
Christ I even felt Tim Sweeney's soul channeling through you, giving those marketing types kind of dead answers... So I'll give two in the same manner. For you maybe. And yeah the EGS MAYBE works well, because theres nothing to break lol.
Isn't there a quote somewhere from Tim himself where he outright says that the 88/12 split isn't sustainable for them either?
This is mostly unrelated to the discussion that has gone on in the thread but is more my take on EGS as a whole this opinion is probably not very unique but still I'd like to share it. Basically I have no issues with Epic Games trying their own store and I have problems with their games being exclusive to it, Fortnite is reasonable to be only available on EGS because they made it. I'll admit I have zero motivation to use the store because utility wise it is objectively worse than Steam for a consumer and developer unless the money is that important. Epic seems to understand this so they pull an incredibly scummy and short sighted strategy of buying out exclusives to get people to use their platform instead of other platforms. They claim they do this to compete with Steam and I suppose that yes they are competing with Steam by doing this however I wouldn't say they're doing so perfectly balanced (lol thanos fortnite ). Steam never once bought out an exclusive game in my memory (correct me if I'm wrong here) and they managed to succeed by being first the only place to play Valve games which led consumers in and then being more or less the best store front. Steam isn't as big and usually the only place publishers tend to release their games on, on PC because Valve pays them a pretty penny to do so, they choose to do this because it is the best choice for them. Epic Games Store is not only the worst choice for a consumer as far as storefronts go (I'd even go as far to say I prefer Origin seeing as they at least don't pull this level of scummy shit). I'd love to see overall how well these exclusives have done financially and sadly there is no telling how they would've done had they been on Steam instead of EGS but I'm willing to bet that for some of the bigger name games that even that nice Epic payout doesn't out-value the amount that they would sell on a better platform. Anyway this was my long ramble about Epic Games Store I'm just glad that i got to fully develop and realize my thoughts in words, thanks for reading.
Well, I've heard some mental gymnast say that Valve bought Turtle Rock Studios thus making L4D exclusive to Steam. And they contributed 'an unknown percentage' to it's development. Whew.
You could probably actually argue more towards Alien Swarm in that case, without requiring quite as much mental gymnastics, seeing as it started out as an Unreal Tournament mod and then became a full Source game on Steam. Still doesn't really account to buying exclusivity though, as I haven't heard anything that's actually preventing either of the listed games from also selling off of Steam.
And even then; they bought exclusivity for Alien Swarm and released it for free. And with Left 4 Dead they funded its development and bought the IP. So even Valve's exclusivity dealings are hardly comparable to what Epic is doing.
Let's go through that train of thought though. Had Valve not done so, which platform would they go to? Only one I see would be GOG. Origin, Uplay and Battlenet all seem to be a "get bought by us" kind of deal, seeing how all of their games are inhouse and not something like Capcom going for Valve to use Steam. And in the end, it IS Steam, not a guy in a raft with an arrangement of pulleys working 24/7 to deliver games with a steam engine. Calling that an exclusivity deal is like saying EA did an exclusivity deal with Bioware for Mass Effect and Dragon Age lol. Heck, I'll go the extra mile. Why didn't Pitchford for example, go to ANY other publisher instead of Steam, seeing how he HATES steam, but went for Epic instead? Almost sounds like Epic sucked his dick or something equivalent to it… Hmmmmm….
