Tim Sweeney- If Valve commits to permanent 88/12 cut, we will stop exclusivity

it does sound like bullshit but the situation this puts those devs in is odd. Either the story is they only sold 9 copies or the story is they're lying on twitter about how many copies they sold to... create fake sympathy? to make the epic store look bad? Why?
"We changed services to something that sucks and now people are pirating the game! Fucking consumers, you suck!"
"Is that good Randy? Did I do good?"
"Yes my child... Sweeney will take note."
Coffee Stain are notorious shitposters. How you guys can take anything they say seriously is beyond me.
I understand having a hatred for EGS, but please don't have an EGS hate boner at the expense of having logic guys. If the game really only sold 9 copies, even with Epic's exclusivity dosh, I'm pretty sure we would've heard about them closing up shop by now, or at least them putting it on Steam by now.
Also I think with a game like World War Z selling 250,000 copies in a weekend on EGS, and the market on EGS being as tiny as it is right now, one could easily deduce with barely any thought that they sold more than 9 copies, especially with them probably giving free copies to popular LPers to promote it.
The only way i can see the claim being legit is that they're talking about 9 copies on the release day alone, not inclusing any of the prior extended early access period copies.
the epic store doesnt highlight the release day literally at all, so if they normally just make ~9 sales a day and release day had 9 sales too i can see this claim being true. Maybe they were expecting a big boost of sales on their "release" but because the platform their on has zero exposure features "release" didnt mean anything on the epic store, so it just became an average sales day?
This is countered by the current way that EGS's store page is set up. Every game that gets added currently has front page billing. Heck, you barely have to scroll down to even see Satisfactory on the main page.
I could see this claim being true if EGS has a fuck ton more games and had its front page set up like Steam's (thus getting potentially fucked over by an algorithm), but even then, I would think that out of the millions of views on the LP videos, if even only 1% of those views bought a copy, that would be 10,000 copies.
The only way the 9 copies claim would be true is if they just slapped the game onto EGS at all with no promotion behind the game at all, and even then, I'd think the odds of that happening would still be low.
First time I heard about Satisfactory was when it showed up on my Steam store recommendations, looked like a very fun game, I wishlisted it then completely forgot about it. Then roughly a month after it releases I see some gameplay videos on youtube and I'm like woah it's already out?? when? I check the steam store and whoop it's on EGS.
I already had hate for Epic before Fortnite BR blew up. I was one of those Fortnite StW players from there at the very beginning, watched as Paragon was shutdown and had to deal with a slew of god awful updates to Fortnite StW. I don't know what's the current status of StW right now but at the time the updates would introduce unwanted changes to the game as well as even more bugs, they took forever to fix some but again that next update would introduce more. When Fortnite BR was annouced, the StW players was just pissed that resources were being diverted into that instead of fixing the shambling state of StW. With each update that made unwanted changes there was always a wave of people just requesting refunds, I eventually had enough of this when a update changed up the stats of the guns and added more useless shit to make finding good weapons worse. At this point I've already spent over 300 dollars on this game, I requested a refund on everything Fortnite to wipe my hands clean of this filth and they actually gave me back all my money. Really shows how crazy Fortnite BR has become.
y'all riding valves dick awfully hard all of a sudden
I'd say Epic has recontextualized things for a lot of people. Put new light on the matter.
Both Epic and Valve are fuckups. I don't think anyone here will deny that Valve hasn't fucked up recently (Artifact, neglecting TF2, not really having made a game since CS:GO, etc).
However, the debate here is between Steam and EGS, and with how much EGS has been getting things wrong as of late, it's even convinced those who were begging for Steam to be challenged and improved (a once large amount of people on these forums) that maybe it wasn't as bad as they were thinking it was.
Valve is putting a lot of time and effort into fixing GoldSource so i'd say they're learning from their mistakes. I also don't recall them ever doing anything like what Epic is doing.
I'd argue Artifact's monetization system is worse than Fortnite's at the very least.
As for "not doing anything like Epic's doing", yeah agreed. Closest thing I can muster up is equating physical releases of PC games just being Steam keys with Steam installers on the disc to Epic buying out exclusives, but that's admittedly a stretch.
Ngl, part of me does miss the days where Steam wasn't an absolute requirement for most PC games even with physical releases. Steam is convenient as fuck, but there are times where I miss the simplicity of just launching a game without having to launch Steam first. Luckily other stores like GOG have me covered on that in some cases.
I remember when it took 6 months to download HL2 and the SDK because i was stuck on a slow connection. These days it takes minutes. It would be nice if you could install games without some online dependency but these days games have day one patches and are encrypted until release.
I remember when I just never played hl2 despite owning it because I expected it to be a normal fucking game
Im 99% sure most people here dont take the 9 seriously, and are more looking at them posting that "joke" but then snap and scream about pirates being manbabies right after. Seems a lot more like they are mad they are losing tons of potential buyers because people are protesting via pirating, which thats what happens when you sign exclusivity inside a very open platform.
And there also seems to be a lot of driveby shitposting from people who absolutely refuse to even attempt to understand the situation or why people feel the way they do about it.
Better than the thorny steel beam the EGS is I guess
You can't resell Steam Keys generated using Steamworks on other storefront at a lower price, but if you have other ways to distributing the game this is all fair game.
Glad to see other people who are enjoying satisfactory i have been loving it and would do multiplayer. Not saying anything about the devs or twitter behavior.
When anyone trying to actually talk gets shouted down that's likely to happen.
People only get "shouted down" for shitposting and malevolent ignorance.
You keep arguing that a lower cut, and less services would be better for indie devs and the consumer. You haven't actually explained a whole lot about why that's true.
I don't believe it is true, and here's my reasoning;
1) Steam provides a large marketplace, and the bandwidth, and hosting features to get games distributed. This is expensive to maintain at the very least.
2) Steam eats the vast majority of the fees that various different countries, counties, states, provinces, and other sorts of local governing bodies impose in many cases. Steam eats all of the processing fees from the credit card and online payment methods. This is good for the consumer.
3) Steam provides a method of having friends join games, you mention you don't care about this, but hundreds of thousands of people do. This also allows devs to have an integrated system for doing this hosted by someone other than themselves. This is good for devs, and the consumer.
4) Steam provides a large number of security features in the form of DDOS protections and a few other things. It also acts as a "Value Added DRM", rather than being overly restrictive, it adds value and protects the game from piracy to a degree. This is good for devs and consumers.
5) Steam aims to give basically everyone who wants to sell a game(with few restrictions) a place to do so. Many other stores have no desire to do this. This is only a positive for Devs and consumers, even if it does mean competition.
6) Steam allows for algorithmic curation of your "feed". This means with some minor time investment a user of steam can have a much more catered feed of games coming to their attention.
No one's shouting you down.
Yeah when you clearly dont know anything about what you're talking about yet presume to know enough to argue over it, that tends to happen.
The situation is both parties are companies looking to take your money, and people shouldn't be lulled back into worshiping gabe newell as a deity because the new kid on the block is objectively worse.
Steam seems pretty good to me.
Gee, it's almost like there's solid reasoning that even people who shit on Valve all the time prefer them to Epic here. Hm... I wonder whatever the reason could be? Definitely wouldn't be something revealed by actually fucking reading the thread or anything.
This post is literal trash.
"most of steam's features are broken or useless" lol wut mate
If you want to bash Valve alongside Epic then go ahead, no one has a problem with that as far as i can tell, but the shittiness of Valve and Epic are on different leagues. If Epic is more shit than Valve then Valve is relatively better than Epic.
It's outright funny to see people defending the EGS in any way or bashing Steam or doing both, because, I'll say it again, it sounds like Steam ran over their dogs or something.
Also of note is the peculiar sudden worry over developers and their earnings, some of which that could actually be of note, do not matter in this discussion since they wouldn't even be eligeble to enter the EGS due to Epic sniping big titles, and not indies that "sUfFeR gReAtLy" from the clutter in the Steam shop and user reviews.
The rest should honestly result in mockery for them, seeing how they're ignoring the bigger, more feature rich and user friendly platform, over literal bribes.
Penna, nobody here is worshiping Gabe Newell. On the contrary, people keep bashing the ever living fuck out of Valve and Steam, multiple times, some of which completely unwarranted for seeing how their mostly complaints over Valve not making HL3/updating TF2/making Artifact. None of those reasons matter here. This is a discussion about Epic and the EGS vs Valve and Steam and what both mean not only to the developers, but also the consumers, the latter of which people seem to be forgetting a whole damn lot nowadays.
Again, I'll ask, what the fuck did Steam do to you that suddenly competition is SO DEARLY NEEDED, and even something as bad and godawful to hear about such as Epic and EGS that praising Steam in comparison is still bad and "being lulled back into it"?
What makes Steam so bad that you can clump it up as such a bad thing to go with EGS and even STILL not make Steam good?
No really, I am genuinely interested in knowing what makes people want competition after having a digital platform that has dozens of things other stores will probably never EVER have.
and pr00ch, fucking update your computer and your steam app then
You're either doing something EXTREMELY WRONG that "most of steam's features are broken" or you're trying to run it in an Athlon with W98 installed or something.
And no. A bug here and there does not equate with "most features are broken". And the fact that you find things to be useless is subjective. Pitchford hates user reviews aswell, but they're more useful to millions of people, than to a man with a narrative to accomplish, if you know what I mean.
At this point, this just sounds like people talking out of their ass to be contrarian, or because Steam crashed once and is instantly bad.
It's just not a well working program, sorry
You couldn't be more vague if you tried.
